Desktop Rx?

How difficult would it be to create a  "Desktop Rx," with RCA and XLR inputs and 1/4 inch and XLR outputs, in a case approximately the size of a Pan Am?

Is that a project that a total noob could take on with a reasonable chance of success?

Other than recasing an existing Rx, I don't think so. Have you seen the component density on that board?

Recasing is what I was thinking about. I know which end of a soldering iron to hold, but that's about the extent of my skills at this point in time. My usual approach to stuff like this is "hire a professional and stay out of the way," but for some reason I'm starting to get an itch to be hands-on.

Well, it is doable. In theory.

But all in all I'd advise against it. Just get a bunch of RCA-3.5mm/etc. converters. There are more fun things in DIY than trying to recase an ultra complicated portable amp. There's a reason why there are so many uncased amps lying around.
