StratoSenn Impressions and Measurements

Subjective Impressions (pre-measurement as always)
  • I like'em! Passed all my less-than ideal torture test tracks.
  • Slight mid-bass hump. Not a bad thing really.
  • Some bumped up mids? 1kHz and broad bump. Not bad. Reminiscent of V-Moda M80's mid-bump.
  • Pushed down in upper mids. Lacks energy sometimes.
  • Not the highest fidelity, but hey, they don't attack me.
  • Tonally, the laid back nature of these remind me of the HE-400, but with an added bass bump.
These could be my favorite Strats to date because they are ... well nice and don't have any treble ear jabs.

Measurements here.
  • Whoa! 12kHz peak and ringing. I probably can't hear this well anyways. I should go back and see if I hear it. Ringing at 12kHz is at the cusp of not being annoying anyways. At least for me. It interesting to note that the AKG Sextetts exhibited similar ringing at 12kHz and I (and RD who punches treble peaks in the face) also did not have a major issue with it.
  • Three minor resonances, but in areas which are more benign.
  • 4.5kHz I bet is the driver. Again not a bad spot, actually a good spot for resonances (increases edge and apparent detail) as long as there aren't other nasty aspects to make it sound worse.
  • The resonances below 1kHz and at 2kHz are probably the result of the cup. Which can be heard.

Neat!  Forgive my ignorance, but what headphones are these based on?  Did I miss something?

Cool results.  I am happy with these, because there is lots of potential. Like purrin I did not really notice the 12k peak and found them very relaxed in the upper mids and highs.
The 12k peak can surely be dealt with.

I did not do a lot of tweaking on these, since I had been focussing on the StratoGrados and I decided to send them in together to let me find out which setup had more potential.

FYI, these use the Sennheiser PX 100ii drivers. Cups and drivers are damped as in the StratoGrados. And I guess using felt instead of damping paper behind the driver might bring down the 12k peak while at the same time still keep the lower frequencies tame.

I think the StratoGrados may have more potential if you can tame their irregularities. The Grado drivers some things very well.

I agree.

Might have to use other Grado drivers, though. Ones that are not as hot as the SR80 drivers

BTW I forgot to mention how fricking awesome the driver matching is on these. Senn is really good at certain things! Or either people only send me their good Senns - and defective Beyers. Yes, I only receive defective Beyers. Or wait, theres 6db variability with my measurement rig, which just so happens to be biased against Beyer.

HD measurement L channel. Worse than StratoGrado, hence why I felt the StratoGrado had more potential. Just need to tweak the FR of the StratoGrado more.
