YW.

One thing I should add is that thinner sounding DACs like the Benchmark, or treble tilted headphones may not be a good match for the Mjolnir. I'm using the PWD2 fw 2.02 which is fairly warm sounding. YMMV. Musical preferences and recording quality also play a huge role. The Mjolnir really started to pull away with well recorded classical.

mjolnir vs BHA-1 advantage mjolnir because of?:  Price, performance, better balanced output, or it simply hits the personal happy spot for its sound quality in general?

I prefer the Mjolnir to the BHA-1 for several reasons:
  • It's more assertive sounding. It suites my preferences in what I would look for in a solid-state amp and also a pre-amp.
  • It's clearer and less veiled. The BHA-1 has a slight misty veil.
  • It's faster sounding. The BHA-1 is a tad slow with attacks on vocals, percussion, etc.
  • The bass macro-dynamics are a hair better. More extension, better control.
  • It does the micro-dynamics thing better, much better. This is most evident on well recorded and produced classical.
Qualities 2-5 above are important to me with #5 being the most important.

The Mjolnir loses to the BHA-1 in these areas:
  • Less headstage depth.
  • Etched or aggressive with treble tilted headphones. The Mjolnir is not voiced in a way to cure them.
  • Can't use SE headphones. Must re-terminate or recable headphones to balanced. Not a problem for me, but could be a serious expense for many others.
  • Needs a source with balanced outputs for it to reach full potential.
The BHA-1 sounded similar to Mjolnir when we first got it, but mellowed out over time (this seems to be corroborated by several HF's - I also feel it gets more mellow and slower sounding the longer it's been on). I can see a lot of folks preferring the mellower presentation and deeper headstage of the BHA-1. Both amps are more similar than different with the exception of the micro-dynamics aspect, which I feel the Mjolnir is one of the best (if not the best) among solid-state headamps. The Mjolnir needs at least an hour warm up to sound best.

The BHA-1 is a good headamp though.

As always, YMMV depending upon recordings, DACs, headphones, etc. I am still enjoying it with the modded HD800s.

Marv, Thanks for the perspective. I would think the other player in this space getting new pub is the Burson Soloist. Have you had a chance to audition it yet?

Nope. I don't know anything about it. Solude at HF had a good chance to hear it in comparison to the Peak, Mjolnir, B22, etc.

My Mjolnir arrived this morning, I've been using it with an HE6. Compared to the underrated Bada PH32 50w/8ohms speaker amp I've been using, the sound is noticeably different. The Bada is a hybrid class A SS amp with 6SN7 tube buffers built into the design.

There's less depth, the soundstage seems wider but it's a left blob-center-right blob sort of presentation. In general, the tube amp has a warmer sound. I noticed that the bass is tighter and better defined on the Mjolnir, as the tube amp tends to make the bass sound a bit rounded. There's also more treble sparkle and "airiness" on the Mjolnir.

Although the Mjolnir seems brighter, I still feel that the amp is essentially neutral. It's in another league compared to the DTA-1 T-amp and the Fiio speaker amp which I've tried it with in the past. For amp preferences, right now I'd say it depends on the genre. I prefer acoustic, classical and generally well-recorded tracks on the Mjolnir, while the tube amp makes modern pop music tolerable. I think it'll probably match better with my HD580, and the Paradox as well (when it arrives).
