LCD2r2 Distortion Measurements
« on: September 06, 2012, 06:16:51 AM »

LCDr2 Distortion.

These are Quest's older r2. I think the newer production r2's sound cleaner. (As I've been saying again and again, the newer production r2s with the bamboo wood are great and really close to the LCD3.)

D2 is great. D3/4/5, I would have thought it be better, but the measurements are according to what I hear. I think folks would have freaked out about how excellent these bass figures were a year ago, but HiFiMans are in generally cleaner in the bass.

Not to shabby overall. I wonder what changes they made between the LCD-2.2.1 and newer bamboo LCD-2.2.2 -- driver or just damping. I did notice the Schiit one out of the Mjolnir was a bit cleaner and smoother than what I was used to.

I'm curious to RMA these to find out -- see if they can clear out a bit if that creaminess.

Yeah - I was going to ask you if you heard Schiit's LCD2r2 which I consider a good one. I don't think it's damping. I think it's a matter of Audeze finally improving the process and getting it down pat. I think I even stated that I considered your r2 a "B" grade last year. (They were all over the place around that time in terms of quality.)

BTW, we've been using your r2 for purposes of our S7 mod experiments. In case something blew up the headphones, they would be yours.

QH - I have an early r.2 as well. I know the 3 year warranty extension applies to all LCD-2/3's, but I thought the RMA process only applied to off spec LCD-3's.

LOL. Do you guys need a second guinea pig? I confess, my LCD-2 works as intended but I've always preferred the HD650 to it. Makes me question the variability of the early r.2 units and whether I'm hearing the same headphone that Head-Fiers gush about.

The LCD-2 is rated for 15 watts anyway...

I was thinking more along the lines of accidentally hooking up a power rail to the outputs.

That would be quite a spectacular mistake...

How much current are the power transformers rated for?  With 7 high voltage dual triodes to run it would be enough to fry the LCD-2.  I could imagine a smaller transformer giving up the ghost first but IDK.

I guess I'm not that familiar with what kind of failure modes a tube can experience either...
