HiFiMan HE5 Frequency Response and CSD Waterfall Plot Measurements.

Now discontinued. More efficient than the HE6s. The ringing below is not as bad as it looks. They actually do NOT sound like treble razors of death and I'm wonder if these are artifacts specific to orthos since the LCD3s also have them. There is however some ringing that 7k area.

I think it might be an ortho thing.  Planar magnetic drivers were made to address the fragility issues of linear magnetic (ribbon) drivers, which have a nasty habit of dissolving into dust at the slightest gust of wind.  It may be an artifact you get from sacrificing the linearity of a true suspended ribbon driver for the ruggedness of 4-sided suspension.  It's bound to create odd waves through the diaphragm.  Either that or I'm talking out of my ass.

Indeed, there seem to be two things going on: a sharp cut in the FR, and a thin wall of the same (or very slowing declining) magnitude extending forward in time. Note the K340 (a planar hybrid) also exhibits these behavior.

Planar magnetic drivers are essentially a hack to increase driver hardiness of proper, linear magnetic drivers.  The entire concept falls apart when the planar diaphragm comes into play.  The entire system is simply not designed to move a two-dimensional fabric surface.

I'm actually trying to design a magnetic driver that solves this problem right now.  It's in R&D.  I'll send it to you to measure when it's done.

Thanks for posting the results so quickly.

These are now modded.

If you're interested in measuring them again, let me know.

For fun.  Would love to work for a company though--they could fab my diaphragm material.

This explains what it was that I was hearing then, always thought they sounded pretty good except for that edginess - less of a problem with acoustic type music but a real problem with very dynamic music. Piano in particular could bring it out. I never owned them but tried a few simple damping techniques on Saachi's pair, never went all out and removed stock damping etc , but i suspect you could control this to a large degree. They are in my mind some of the most attractive ortho's ever made. Enjoy LFF :) ..dB

They are really purdy. I really need to get that CNC machine and start making aftermarket cups for the HiFiMan's.

Hey Marv / Luis, will any measurements be done on the Code-X (modded HE5) in the near future? I'm excited to see how its sound has been adjusted.
