I don't think you need to go farther than some basic psychology to explain that kind of stuff.

Mostly what gets me riled up are fraud, deception, and when people tell newbies they won't enjoy a good headphone without some expensive source or amp, should spend tons of money on it upfront, and not bother at all if they don't have the cash.

With that last one you don't even need to make an appeal to either the primacy of measurements or the subjective experience of expert golden-eared listeners.  Either one could be right but the fact is that plenty of people enjoy good headphones even out of an ipod, receiver, onboard sound, or inexpensive head amp so if someone is new to the hobby doesn't it make sense to try the cheaper option first?  From the way some people talk you'd think it was like driving you car around without tires on the rims.

I guess I should clarify before the wrong person reads that the wrong way.  It's not that I don't hear a difference, I do.  It's just that those differences aren't as bothersome to me as the problems in the transducer, and there aren't really any headphones that sound good enough for me to want to invest much in upstream gear ;)  At least none I can afford.

I think where Marv and myself get caught up in trouble is that we ascribe a lot of significance to differences many would consider more subtle or even negligible.  For us some of these things are make or break and sometimes worth the cost only because that's what the performance costs.  Personally I have a hard time giving up an experience of hearing something in a track I have never heard before so going backward is tough for me.  I have no problem admitting it's some form of pathology.  Both of us wish these well performing things didn't cost that much but it is what it is.  I'd happily take an O2 over a Leben, Isabellina, Burson and much other over priced garbage.  Perhaps even the Pinnacle as its too bright and analytical sounding for me.  I won't take it over things my ears do like better that just happen to cost more.  If either the BA, S7, Manley or Stratus and O2 swapped prices and chassis it wouldn't change what my ears crave.

I'm really pissed too that I found the ALO Rx mk3 the most transparent and capable portable amp I've ever heard displacing my Leckerton and perhaps even the Lisa 3.  The price is ridiculous and Ken at ALO is a dickhead.  F*ck me, I don't want to give him any money.

Unless I'm lucky enough to think of a pithy one-liner quickly my posts tend to balloon as I attempt to make sure everything is properly qualified and explained.

OTOH, when you see stuff like this and go from stunned disbelief to barley being able to contain your laughter it can be worth it...

"Oh look I just found the differences between AD797 and OPA627

Why is it not in the THD+N or FR oh noes my snow kingdom of science in the sky is melting help meeee

see attached picture"

He has no idea of the physical laws behind anything and no idea of the scales and and magnitudes involved.

Other than that, I don't think anyone is immune to placebo or expectation bias, be they subjectivists or objectivists (in the audiophile sense). I'm fine relying on the listening impressions of people who have shown a good ear for casual purposes (ie buying a piece of gear with a return policy). But anything more, I prefer more solid evidence.

Honestly, I think kiteki has gone off the deep end. Like, stopped-taking-important-medication type gone off the deep end.

Yeah, kiteki kind of scares me sometimes. That's one reason I didn't wade in to bail RD out of trouble in the K550 thread. I waited until everyone involved was issued a warning by Curra to permanently stay away from it. Then I posted the same elephant turd pic that RD posted. How was I supposed to know he posted teh exact same photo? Geez?

I'm still having a hard time not posting in the thread.  When they can no longer accuse me of hearing things or placeboing myself by opening the cups before listening to them (who the fuck would open up a headphone before listening to it.  You open it because of what you hear when you listen to it), Katun now blames me for "getting the ball rolling" with my "spamesque" posts. All I did was compare the K550 to the M50 and declare M50 the winner.  But I mentioned many positives of the K550 along with it's shortcomings.

Head-fi needs a circle jerk forum so they can all crawl away and avoid anyone with half a brain.

If I understand right, the K550 threads were heavily modded?  I noticed some stuff missing and completely missed a lot of the more contentious posts.  Can anyone hook that shit(enfreude) up?

In Windsor's surprisingly cogent roundup review:

"Your reviews lost all credibility with me when you said you could hear a difference between gold and silver contacts."
