SSD Drives On Steroids Finally Hitting the Mainstream
« on: September 22, 2015, 03:27:19 PM »

Looks like Samsung is going to be putting M.2 (pci-e based) SSD drives into the mainstream.  These things are quick.

Nice. The 256GB model will make for a fantastic OS drive. Amazing that just a few years ago, this sort of performance would've cost a couple of grand from a PCI-e slot drive. Now they're starting at $200!

I've been living with a 128GB OS drive on my laptop for some time now.  It's doable with some discipline in using external storage and the cloud, but 256 feels like it would a sweet spot for me.

Awesome stuff, quick, big, and relatively cheap!

Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

The EVO version of the 850 M.2 drives have been out for quite a while now, and they perform roughly the same as the SATA based 850 Pro. I look forward to seeing the performance jump with the M.2 850 Pro.

Added to the Christmas list. I've been waiting for proper m.2s to hit reasonable prices.

Can't ignore this sort of performance. Looks like a natural fit in my upgrade plans.

If only it came in 2260 or 2240 format. Asus, in their hindsight, didn't realize people might wanna put 2280 and larger M.2 in the Asus Maximus VII Formula ... although the recent iteration of the Maximus VIII series does address this issue and fits as large as 22110 format M.2 sticks.

Can't you just use your PCIe slot?

Yes, in theory, but that puts all the stress on the M.2 PCB near the PCI-e connector. The M.2 slots on mobos tend to have some mounting option, so that there's less of a chance of breaking your hardware.

I wonder if there are any PCI-e adapters that will allow a less strained mounting option if the mobo has too small of a M.2 mount length or none at all. Time to research.

Edit: Just checked. There are many. Just wish it came in a less green PCB lol ...
