Yeah, but that's kind of the very reason that we label certain hateful and bigoted opinions as they are.
Nah, the reason that certain opinions are labeled as such is to repress dissent. It's a tactic people use to avoid arguments that may require them to challenge the conventional wisdom of their social environment.

If those arguments are based on hatred and bigotry, then yes. Repressing dissent in that case would mean taking a stance against hatred and bigotry, which is fairly well-reasoned conventional wisdom in every social environment.

While there's certainly some truth to this, I find it a bit too simplistic.  Even today Finnish nationalists dressed in KKK garb harrassed a bus of immigrants - is it wrong to call this behavior "hatred" or "bigotry"?

Regardless, I certainly don't come to an audio forum to argue about politics with strangers who refuse to believe any dissenting opinion holds an ounce of merit.  I might be wrong, but I'd assume the majority of people feel the same way.  I don't really understand how banning these flame wars or relegating them to an off-topic forum will detract from what made Changstar great in the first place - frank opinions and analyses of audio equipment/experiences without fear of angering sponsors or biased moderators.

This is reminding me too much of the fiasco with Aris in the Fighting Game community last year.  He was caught on live stream constantly disparaging and sexually harrassing female players; when confronted, he defended himself and said that racial slurs and sexual discrimination is what makes the FGC what it is.  He believed that changing ANYTHING would destroy the community.

Last I heard, the FGC is getting rid of all that junk and doing just fine anyway.  We likewise should focus on what's essential instead of getting hung up on the periphery.

I think one needs to avoid generalizations, and look at specifics.

I love a good argument. Farting in somebody's face is not good argument, nor is crapping on their shoes.

His work "The Age Of Reason" is on my bookshelf. I partially read the book. When you reference Thomas Paine and his "reason" you open the thorough criticism and analysis that even the founding fathers at one point tried to brush away. Paine's reason was so sharp that even religion was blasted to bits. He was liked for his catchy statements in his time but his thoroughness was not always appreciated by the public. He was painfully thorough in his critical analyses.

He was and is one of the most interesting people from the Enlightenment Period.

My last boss reminded me so much of that sketch that I would sometimes ask him if it was the five-minute or the half-hour that he was expecting.
