As an Asian American currently living in China, I actually found OJ's diagram hilarious.  Living here, it's amazing to look at the fashion sense of the uber-wealthy older generation.  Whether we're talking about furniture or clothing, the wealthy seem to gravitate toward the gaudy and ostentatious.  I just find it hilarious that Hifiman's idea of "high-class" brought us the horribly ugly design and colors of the HE-1000.  (Ironically, the HE1K still isn't for sale in China, supposedly due to fears that it will be copied and sold for cheaper within months)

Then again, I can understand how some people may be offended by "Ching Chong."  I moved to the US when I was quite young, and my school didn't have too many Asians at the time so I was called plenty of names.  By middle school, things toned down of course, but I'll never forget the name calling my sister and I were subjected to at the time.  We can laugh about it now, but those definitely weren't fun times.

Perhaps we can still retain the spirit of irreverence without the name-calling?  Instead of "Ching Chong," something like "China's idea of high-class" or something.  Not as catchy, but still :)

As for the abrasiveness of certain people, I've actually talked to several people both via PM on H-F and via e-mail regarding this site.  Many of us are bothered by the hype train and Jude's Iron Fist on H-F, so we either lurk or occasionally post here instead.  I absolutely love Changstar even if I don't post here enough.  Honestly, I don't post much because I'm worried I will say something "wrong" and get attacked.  Maybe this isn't rational, and I know most veterans wouldn't do this, but there are one or two who I've seen do exactly that without any fear of retribution.

Okay, okay, so some people here have golden ears and more experience in the audio world than I will ever have my entire life.  That doesn't make it acceptable for them to push their political and sociological views on others and then call us idiots for not agreeing.  It's just one of those things that leaves a bad taste in my mouth, regardless of how much I like these forums.  I echo CEE TEE's views on treating each other online how you would treat us in real life.  It's a good rule of thumb to follow anywhere on the internet :)

I simply have to trust the founding members to do what is best for Changstar.

This little oasis in an ocean of nothingness has a good captain.

Here's a fairly simple proposal we should consider:

Whilst I and some others enjoy discussing politics, there are clearly members who don't. Maybe we need to place their wishes first. As much as I enjoy hearing what folks here think about the issues of the day, that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make. Head-Fi (and I don't relish comparing us to Head-Fi) has a No Politics rule, and it works. This might require a bit of an adjustment on the part of some of us, but it's worth considering at this juncture.

It means no more posts/shouts like this:

Politics-free means you only discuss politics somewhere private. It doesn't mean that some opinions are A-OK but others are silenced.

I'd appreciate your feedback either way, especially from those who regularly comment on politics (Anax, Austin, burns, Dave, DF, kap, Kunlun, Marv, OJ, tode et al.). What do you think?

I think many things. For the coming time I shall avoid certain topics.

Some people like their espresso puro. Others want less espresso and more milk and/or sugar. Expect more silence and metaphors from me.

I actually think it's a good idea. This is supposed to be an audio forum. I like how on Steve Hoffman they can talk about the Colbert show and stay on topic about the quality of the show without descending into politics.

I think this is more of the point.  I don't think the goal is to silence everyone or prevent people from cracking jokes it's more about being able to have a conversation without it turning into something blown up or super offensive.  Like I said we are all apart of this audio community and it's important that we respect one another.

One thing we certainly shouldn't tolerate on the new forum is homophobia. If a gay member of the forum decides to get married and makes a public announcement about it, please don't use that as an excuse to grumble.
