... that's called website administration, if you try and make things "perfect" to keep things from going wrong you're just going to be repeatedly disappointed

one of the first things my teacher told us ... blah blah blah blah blah

FWIW, I was IT Director of a denovo financial institution where I built out the infrastructure from the ground up during a time of rapid growth, and before that I spent six years doing web infrastructure and distributing computing infrastructure work, and before that I did software engineering work for six years.

You can tell me what to know or give me tidbits of your teachers' wisdom after you've actually worked in IT for 10-20 more years. Maybe you should try running your own web forum with similar levels of activity, crazy members who cause a flood of "WTF / Defcon 3" PMs and text messages to you, work one real job, and one hobby job (seriously), while taking care of / spending time with wife and kids.

By the way, it is possible to get things stabilized in IT to the point where you can play putt putt golf in the office on a daily basis. This should be the ultimate goal of anyone in charge of IT. Zero unplanned downtime. In fact, this is absolutely necessary for certain types of IT businesses (SaaS, PaaS, etc.). This is assuming you can get senior management and Board buy in on certain expeditures, and you know exactly what you are doing. Most "IT Managers" I've met are morons, especially at the large non technology corporations. Let's not even get into the subject of MIS "teachers".

What a bunch of crybabies! "Daddy, Claritas hit me." :'(  Well, son, maybe you shouldn't have thrown the first punch.

Oh, I know. I really don't want it to come to that. But it might.

In any case, I don't see why it should become your problem.

Are you surprised there are certain people that can't follow directions or handle their own issues that feel a need to appeal to someone else for their own appeasement? Instead of being just a random dude who wanted to create a forum chewing the fat about audio out of his own generosity, he's now seen as a proprietor of a business that must coddle and provide eternal happiness for even the lowest common denominator of consumer with such unrealistic expectations that even Jason Stoddard would hang up on them.

Well, I'm not like that. So, yes, I am kind of surprised.

Test drove vB5 Cloud. It sucks. Xenforo seems promising.

The Steve Hoffman forums made a switch from vBulletin to XenForo. As a forum user I like XenForo. It works well and manages to keep good track of what posts you have read and what you haven't. Good alerts for letting you know if someone has quoted you and good alerts for letting you know if someone has posted to a thread you're watching. It's all good as a forum user for posting and keeping up with the forum. I don't know how it is for admin stuff and hardware needs and that sort of thing.

Used to be part of the email forum Phonogram, which had a LOT of members and 150+ emails a day, more on weekeneds. By the last years, it was bursting at the seams, and they started to ask for annual donations to keep it going. It was like $15 a year and the forum moderator would open and close access to people (it was a managed list distribution). The email server still eventually died, along with members, so now there's a facebook page, and a low key private list. But it lasted almost ten years, and to this day, is probably the deepest resource for vinyl info. Fremer was there, until all the attacks bummed him. Stan Ricker, Harry Wesfield, Bob Reina, Robert Greene. Names, but there were a lot of deep AC/DC fans, Deadheads, Blue Note fanatics, Living Stereo and Living Presence collectors.

The point was it was great because of all the knowledge, and Changstar has that same quality. Hopefully you find a way to keep it going, cause honest knowledge comes at a price, but is really a rare thing.

Also, this thread has to more prominent, cause this is about long term existence.  I just found it yesterday, and its been going on for a while.  headbang

Going to gofundme now.

You understand.

I tend to be more of the impatient type wanting to move things forward as fast as possible. But right now, I am also evaluating data centers / service providers.

I've got both vB5 and XenForo at two different facilities. One facility sits on my questions, and asks more questions, and then sits for two days to tell me that they cannot receive screenshots to give them my admin (which they should already have). The other has two different people respond in a matter of hours to low priority ticket on open questions regarding the process to move from a VPS to dedicated server, how they monitor and maintain databases, etc.

Proper due diligence never hurts.
