Sick as a Dog
« on: August 25, 2015, 05:32:58 PM »

Phew.

This has been rough.

I really don't have the energy to go into it in too much detail---and there's a shitload of detail---but I'm currently laid-up in hospital. Had my last colonoscopy about 8 years ago and was free and clear. Well, things change. Evidently I've got some diverticuli growing around my lower bowel, and one decided to spew its contents (shit, basically) into my bowels. At that point the fetid concoction gets taken up in the blood stream, and gets transported to the liver for processing. Well, this isn't the type of thing that your liver regularly processe---at least not in significant amounts---and you develop litte sites of bacterial infection in the liver. Pustules, if you will, cysts, liver pimples.
When they did the CT scan they saw about 20 of these; mostly pea sized to grape, but a couple were as big as golf balls.

They've now drained or aspirated (stuck a needle in and sucked it dry) as many as they could to reduce the load on my body. But the problem is the body's defense mechanism is such that it little tries to build a wall around the infection, and these walls are fairly sturdy. They tell me I'll very likely be on a 4-6 week regimen IV Anti-biotics. Fortunately, because I've got a PICC line installed (semi-permanent IV site) I'll be able to do this at home.

On the down side, my white blood cell count was up again this morning---evidencing ongoing battle with the infection---and quite a few od my blood work numbers are sort of bouncing all over the place. They think they'll be switching to a stronger anti-biotic. Shit folks, if you've got some King Kong of anti-biotic let's have it.

So, things are slowly getting better, but I'm not entirely out of the woods yet. My doc told me this AM that Thur-Fri would be the soones release date if they can get all the numbers stable.

Damn that's rough.  I need you to hang in there for purely selfish reasons; you're one of the few audio reviewers that has had a tremendously important impact on my audio journey.  Cheers, and genuinely hoping you recover quickly!

Man, Tyll, if that was the less detailed version, then I can't imagine how bad it must actually be for you.

Positive thoughts and prayers headed your way.  Take care of yourself.

It's very rare that I post on these boards, but having furiously checked and rechecked innerfidelity for updates every day of the last week and having actually grown annoyed with the lack of such, this kind of puts it into perspective. What stupid things we get annoyed over and obsessed with... I wish you all the best and a speedy recovery. Corny as it is, there are probably countless of other people like me out there who - although you've never met us and probably never will - like you and wish you the best.

PS: Thats one of the benefits of being really into music and headphones: Thats a hobby one can enjoy even when chained to a bed and sick like a dog. I hope you are able to get joy from that now.
