Raspberry Pi 2

Read some pyrates were running Volumio on RPi2 on another thread, so I gave that a try too.

The amazing little box is now streaming music from my NAS to my amp.

The most expensive thing was the linear power supply

RPi2: $40
RPi2 case: $10
SD Card: $15 SanDisk Ultra 32gb
software: FREE (but feel free to donate)
keyboard: N/A using spare
monitor: N/A using HDMI adapter to an old monitor
CAT5 network cable: N/A using spare
HDMI cable: N/A using spare
DAC: $120 GO450 from Massdrop campaign
TRS to RCA cable: $10
5v power supply: ~$125 linear power supply with more amperes than necessary to run the GO450. You can use an old phone charger with micro USB cable, or better yet a 5v battery power pack for really clean power.

Basically you can build a music server for less than $200, depending on the parts.  :)p1

I'm still having problems having it run on wifi though, but you can't beat the price and the performance especially with a GO450

Had so much fun, I decided to actually run Ubuntu on another RPI2 box.

Sweet!

I wanna build a music server but since I don't have a NAS i thought id cut out the middle man (WiFi + NAS).  I want to use a hummingboard and a msata ssd -->I2s out to my dac, but I'm still figuring how to do it.

How's the quality compared to your computer?

Awesome joch!!! :)p7

I've been wondering about RPi2. Great to know that Volumio kicks butt.

I actually have a Node, and can say that the RPi2+GO450 is better because of the DAC.

Versus the GO450 running from my Mac, the RPi2+GO450 is still better because of the linear power supply. I haven't tried to rig the GO450 with a separate power source, which might give the Mac an advantage running Audirvana.

I'm not using the RPi2 as a computer per se--it's just a server. I'm controlling it via my iPhone to play music. You can have it attached to a monitor and keyboard/mouse, but you can control it through a web interface on a tablet, or with some phone apps. The way it's set up is RPi2 (without monitor/keyboard/mouse) > GO450 > amp input. That's it. Everything controlled from my phone via the browser.

It's not as slick or can stream as many internet stations as a Node, but for a basic music server it's quite good, and it's much more discrete.

If you don't have a NAS, you can plug in an external USB drive.

Which case did you get with your RPi2?
