Sounds like I'll have to get a balanced cable.

There are some great manufacturers who will make TRRS to four pin XLR adapters for you. But if you want to do it yourself, here's what I use:

Neutrik NC4FX Female XLR Connector - http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Neutrik/NC4FXX/?qs=sGAEpiMZZMv0W4pxf2HiV93GipIkIQImLfn89hHPYZw%3d

REAN/Neutrik NYS231 Male 3.5mm TRRS Connector - http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/REAN-Neutrik/NYS231/?qs=sGAEpiMZZMsBYeZNO4kNBDiVxadDKvpE

If you don't want to DIY, mimic-cables seem to be cheap and pretty good.

I was under the impression that MOAR POWER = MOAR VOLUME into the same load, but that doesn't seem to be the case. The particular case I am trying to understand is this:

POWER AND GAIN

MOAR GAIN = MOAR VOLUME
MOAR POWER = MOAR VOLUME BEFORE DISTORTION RISES

Amps that have sufficient power but low gain may not be able to get certain headphones loud enough.
Amps that don't have enough power will output clipping and distortion into headphones.

Most headphones only need flea power to sound loud without much distortion. More often than not, I run out of gain, especially with low voltage out sources.

Also, it is important to understand power numbers.

Say 500mW? That doesn't mean anything. Take for example the following:
  • Is that 500mW peak or is that 500mW RMS.
  • is that 500mW into 35 ohms (HEK) or 300 ohms (HD600) or 600 ohms (HD800)?
  • What is the distortion at that 500mW? 1%? 5? 10%?
Some amps have trouble delivering power into low impedance loads. The relationship is not linear with power and loads.

Basically, when a manufacturer says they make a headphone amp that puts out 22 watts (with no other qualifiers), they probably full of crap and playing on the fact that many audiophiles get easily fooled into the longer schlong game. A longer schlong is useless if it can't get hard under load.

I was going to comment on some of your very good points and got to this:

A longer schlong is useless if it can't get hard under load.

Good talk. I'll just keep listening.

   300 ohms (HD600) or 600 ohms (HD800)?[/q]

All numbers I have seen put HD800 at 300 ohms, not sure if there has been other measurements...but point taken!
