Ethnicity is a human construction? So is DNA I suppose. Give me a break. facepalm Like Napoleon or Hitler chose who their parents and grand parents were. gtfo

Talk about Deconstructionism gone awry.  :spank:

When you stop talking about X (nationality)=Y (ethnicity) then we can have a grown up conversation. Till then, check your logic my friend.

I still don't understand why the ethnicity vs Nationality debate came here .

Nationality in France is based on the place your were born. period. If you're born in France , you're french.. the entire french culture and history is based on the fact that the nation is built around our territory.  So whatever are you ethnic origins.. it does not matter.

Was it the point of debate?    p:8

FWIW:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethnic_group

An ethnic group or ethnicity is a socially defined category of people who identify with each other based on common ancestral, social, cultural or national experience.

So if Charles De Gaul was born in Mexico, he would have been Mexican and not French?

It was brought up as people who tend to ignorantly and pridefully nationalize their heroes, and tend not to be able to discern the nuance of national identity versus ethnic lineage (as we see here). People amplify their own perceived bias against the true facts of history and detract from credit where it might have been due. This is the basis of historical revisionism. Loosing the nuance of the truth promotes the great lies.

See bolded. Denotes actual biological lineage per DNA. You would have to go back 350,000-500,000 years to possibly find a common ancestor to say that ethnic heritage is just a social construct and we are all the same (at which point Napoleon might as well be an American). It's a nice hippy thing to say.

I feel like I need to make a sticky explaining basic logic...

Not quite that far...

I've always understood nationality to be something they stamp on your passport. A legal category you are assigned based on where you have naturalized. Ethnicities can exist within any given nation (for example, Russia, China, any Mid-east country will have a thousand different ethnic groups). If you are born in a Hispanic family in America where you speak Spanish to all your relatives, friends, classmates and you eat burritos and horchata everyday and wave the Mexican flag in front of your house....... are you Mexican or American? Depends on who you ask I guess. This doesn't get into cultural attitudes which I find to be separate from both nationality and ethnicity. Ask someone who has cousins back in their mother country about how they are. Same ethnic DNA, traditions, etc. but very different behavior/attitudes based on a myriad of factors pertaining to just existing in a different environment.
