The French dream bigger.

From this thread, they must be dreaming. Or hallucinating. :P

Actually crowning oneself Emperor and destroying the Republic seems to be a shattered dream if I recall Beethoven's reaction. One could say the US has headed down that path the last 6-7 years... :vomit:

ROFL. Anax, you were implying Bonaparte wasn't anymore french than Hitler was german.. So I'm just asking whether the logic applies to all.

Koth, Bonaparte was born in august, while the battle that sealed the deal with France was in May.

The worst part is that you are right. There was the Monroe doctrine. Then South-America became the back yard of the U.S every once and a while and since president Wilson the U.S. has intervened many more times around the globe. After 1948, the year of Israel and the set-up of the petrol-dollar system the U.S. president has become increasingly powerful.

I find it amazing that only Nixon left for his acts. Fast forward to the last fifteen years. Things have changed a lot.

By the way the French presidents still have emperor characteristics. Each French president has to leave a massive monument, it does not matter how silly for it is French culture.

Yes, the logic still holds monsieur. Have you followed your own thought process out?

So, Napoleons family heritage and ethnicity spanning thousands of years is no longer valid because of 3 months when France signed a piece of paper? Which logic are you applying here??  :-Z

Umm, the US President is still elected (to a degree). We were talking about Emperors and Kings which now becomes a discussion about Imperialism and colonialism? Aren't you Dutch who sold the white people here every black slave in American history? You are right though, Napoleon promised hope and change. That went well. We never had a Committee for Public Safety either, but that appears to be our future with Osamacare.

I think I've had enough off topic shoutbox tangential stream of consciousness for one evening. Nite.

The Dutch were peculiar to say the least. I am well aware of the grey and black pages of Dutch history. Political correctness in NL is burying the nuance under an agenda of hype and nonsense. Dutch politicians mostly sold out to Brussels so consider me a critic.

Rulers or those in power sometimes have strange tendencies. The French are fun and quirky in that regard.

Bonsoir Anaxilus.

Sorrodje, ce n'est pas un problème.

Vous êtes encore très cool parce que vous êtes Français. C'est la charme de "je ne (vraiment) sais quoi mais pourquoi pas?"

You (the French) are still very cool because you are French. It is the charm of "I do not (really) know but why not?"

Sorrodje, I leave the soundtrack to you  ahoy

I've been pushing your logic, Anax, not mine. As far as I'm concerned, the Founding Fathers are americans, and Bonaparte is french, because they chose it. Nationality is as much a human construction as ethnicity, especially in the mediterranean area. Corsica was part of France before the French Alps, so where do we stop ? The franks, the gauls ? Are alsacians french or not ? Maybe too off topic here.

Bonaparte rose in the revolutionary army and fought for the sake of democracy against the european monarchs before rising to his position in the triumvirat. Given that by that time they were basically cutting heads like grass (including one of my ancestors) I can't really say what would have been worse, keep the state as is or create the triumvirat. But yeah basically the shit hit the fan after that, which doesn't mean it wouldn't have anyway. [Insert here the french bashing quote, that's well deserved]

At the same time he created the basis of the modern european society, the Code Napoleon, which is still a good part of the french law and some others by association. So yeah things aren't so clear cut. We're not talking Nazi racial laws here.

Now to the french presidents, they are actually elected directly by the people, eventhough they all bear that emperor/king/dictator/chosen by god character. And yeah they all need that monument, as does every guy that gets elected here. It's just ridiculous.

Nighty night Anax

I mostly agree with frenchbat here.. Especially that : "So yeah things aren't so clear cut"  ...

Seriously Napoleon is not considered at all as an historic Hero in France . As stated wisely Frenchbat we consider it as a mad guy but we all know what modern France is indebted to Napoleon era.   France is a country of contrasts and grey areas.

it would be more accurate and troublesome for us if you talked about french people behavior during the WW2 or during the decolonization war ... you US people have some courage to put bad things on the table and analyse it ( Vietnam for example) .. here... we ( State and people) keep it secret as long as possible.
