Brooks/LH/Chang SoCal Impressions (June 27, 2015)

Whoa, you guys are already demoing this?!  Or these? Zang. Tell us more.

There's always a surprise at every Changstar meet.

Jason and Moffat were tight lipped... But I strongly suspected something was different on THAT Bifrost... I did hear someone say "ReDACed^2", but no idea what that means.

The megacomboburrito filter in the Yggy, Theta, etc. has a certain presentation in terms of space. I wasn't too sure at first, but it became the most evident with certain spacious recordings I was very familiar with. I kept pressing the input select button because I thought it was the absolute polarity button like on the Yggy (yeah it make a difference.) Also, D-S Bifrost has a certain grain, more than the Gungnir. Did not hear any such D-S nonsense. The Schiit guys might be playing games though. Maybe they put the new AKM DAC chip in there. Still the megacomboburrito soundstage is a huge giveaway for me. The end is near for all other D-S DACs below around $1200.

Tonality is warm, especially after settling in. Does not sound like NOS. Thank you jebus! Treble sounded better in the afternoon. I guess it only needs a 3 hour warm-up.

Those tin cans on the Lyr 2 are "solid state" tubes. An experiment. No idea if they will be released. They are cannot be stuck into other tube amps. Crack, poof! Anyways, the SS tubes offer a different take on the usual Lyr 2 warm sound. Lyr 2 now becomes fast, precise, lean, and mean.

I forgot. A huge thanks to our friends at Light Harmonic / Casey Hartwell and Brooks Berdan for helping make this happen!

Light Harmonic gave away two Geek Out V2s. These two lucky guys won the prize.

Also, thanks to the rest of you guys for helping set up and tear down. You guys are awesome! Can't thank you enough. It's hard setting up meets, even small ones like this.

Ultimate Ears was there. They brought their 3D scanner. Free impressions.

Ultimate Ears was always supported these smaller meets. They are awesome.

Surprisingly good sounding compact DAC/amp for 009. Craig and I liked it! This new Vostok is a huge improvement over the prior version (which most of here at Changstar never talked about much, for good reason.) Again, this is good. Easily take it over some of the STAX amps.

  • You'd do it for Randolph Scott.

By the time I got into the room to get a listen to the dacs, I asked about the Chord. And people were shaking their heads and just continued to A/B the Yggdrasil and EAR DAC. Different presentation from each, but I'll wait for the comparison experts to do a better job of communicating what I was hearing.

It was great to put names/faces to screen names.  this was a lot of fun glad I was able make it (thanks kamaka!!).  Lot's of cool stuff at the meet. This is how meets should be enthusiast and dedicated vendors enjoying the hobby.  By the way did anyone get a chances to listen to a vpi classic turntable?

i.e. SAAG PANEER!! Thanks for wiping the plates clean ;)

hey we need a menu post for future visits, especially the name of that fish dish it was awsome   :)p17 :)p17 :)p17.

wait I thought we couldn't talk about the [redacted^2] + solid lyr.  made me wish for a solid tube yggy (that I probably couldn't afford anyways, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't exist).

Yggy vs EAR DAC

Different approaches. They trade blows against each other. I like both DACs, but will keep it simple:
  • The EAR has better clarity, blackness, and dynamic swing (tubes over FETs in Yggy) [contrary to what most people believe, tubes done right do sound clearer, more dynamic, and more resolving than solid-state]
  • The Yggy has the R2R/Rstring natural treble, better micro, and tighter bass
In general terms, EAR has better analog, Yggy has better digital. Pick your poison. The EAR is similar to Lampi 4, 5, Big 5, but done better. Way better.

OJ and Craig (with HD800) preferred the EAR. Anax, I-Meme, and I preferred the Yggy. As an aside, I used the EAR DAC with the volume all the way up. The 3 o'clock position on volume with EAR resulted a more tubey slower sound which is not my preference, but I can see this preferred by a lot of other people. I have always liked the EAR / Tim de Paravicini stuff quite a bit. Tubes done right (clarity, dynamics) with a slight touch of tube euphonics - a very consistent house sound.

Because of the specific nature of the HE1000's treble, the EAR DAC's stridency was more difficult. With the HD800, the stridency was more bearable. For me personally, after living with AGD M7, SFD-1, Theta Gen V, Yggy, for quite a while, I could not bear the delta-sigma sound of the digital section of the EAR. That was a showstopper issue for me; but I would highly recommend the EAR to others who would find the delta-sigma sound more bearable.

P.S. Anyone know what's in the EAR? Wolfson?

I didn't think the Magicos were that bad. I was more offended by the one with the hour glass cabinet.
