Mousai MSD192 DAC technical measurements
« on: May 22, 2015, 08:44:57 PM »

I thank LFF for his post reviewing the MSD192 here. Inspired to hear one, I was more than a little impressed at this DACs performance for the price point. It has become my favorite for pairing with a Bottlehead Crack and Garage 1217 Project Sunrise III as an inexpensive yet high performing small foot print system. Many hours have been enjoyably spent listening with HD600 and now HD650 to these combinations.

The data presented were collected as follows:

1.  PrismSound dScope III, picoscope 5243B
2.  DAC unbalanced output RCA
3.  100 Kohm load used for measurements
4.  44 KHz  sample rate, 24 bit depth
5.  USB input – Audioquest Forest
6.  Unbalance cable DH Labs Silver Sonic Air Matrix RCA
7.  Vaunix Lab Brick USB hub

It should be noted that the Mousai had some issue with the dScope source signal when performing the jitter measurement such that dScope script would not complete properly using USB input. SPDIF was used instead for the jitter measurement. As the graphs were plotting, the USB jitter plot looked substantially similar to the SPDIF up to the point of not completing. The only anomaly I experience with the MSD192 is switching from 44 KHz to 88 or 96 in a playlist there is a short burst of hiss before the music starts at the synchronization to the new sample rate. Changing from 88 or 96 back to 44 KHz the sound level mutes and fades up during the first second of music.
