meet Dave...
« on: May 15, 2015, 04:12:48 AM »

I have a feeling folks around here are totally going to love this.

14th May 2015, High End, Munich – Chord Electronics is proud to unveil the world’s most advanced digital to analogue convertor, DAVE

When will they change that godawful font on their display?

A shitty little lo-rez LCD display? For that kind of money I'm expecting a custom circular OLED.

My first thoughts:

This thing makes the Hugo look elegant and simple by comparison.

So let me get this straight. With the stupid 4-poster holder gizmo, it makes it difficult to get access to the headphone jack? (which is TSR on a top-end DAC/amp combo)

Veritas in extremis? Uh, extremā. I doubt this is a poetic plural for singular employed for the sake of meter.

If you gave me that DAC for free, I still wouldn't put that on my rack. Chord needs to hire a designer that didn't get high in a locked room with just a shitty fruit cake for company.

For it's price, that porthole had better be waterproof to 40 meters and come with it's own periscope.

Dave: the DAC of choice for Naval re-enactors & submarine fetishists.

I have owned a few Chord DACs, some good, some not so good, and I've found that the higher end units like the QB76 stood out among their contemporaries at the time of release.

That being said, they've maintained high end pricing with no significant improvement in sound. Hell, the Hugo was not significantly better than the QuteHD which, to me, was a big step back from the QB76. In the world of Yggdrasil, $10k+ DACs can no longer be "just good" but have to really excel. I'll reserve judgment until I hear it, but I suspect value proposition is low.
