what hakko are you using? One of the interns has been borrowing my fx888d for too long. I need to recover it.

Hakko FX-888D.  Great soldering station and looks the biz too!

Nice catch.

It is a transformer. It's used to internally boost either the batteries or the wall wart up to snuff. Since you're only getting 3V from the batteries, or 4.5V (more like <4V) from the wall wart.

I suspect that "eco mode" bypasses the extra regulation afterward to smooth out oscillation, so without that, the high-pitch whine is coming from the transformer. <- probably just silly blabbing from a wannabe engineer, so I think someone more qualified will have to correct me on this one.

Almost makes me wish I kept my 002 as it had no whine in Eco Mode.

Almost is the key word :). Doubt you'd use this fucker much if ever even with a much better amp. Remember I ran mine out of a KGSSHV and despite it scaling quite well, it still never captured head time.

Yeah, I would only use it for it's zero isolation to hear PA announcements at the airport or other similar circumstances.

Wait high pitch whine? I thought transformers where super quite that's why everyone says there great in a power supply.
