Chopin Nocturne in E Minor Op 72 no. 1
« on: March 30, 2015, 09:51:20 AM »

I've always liked this best of all Chopin's work since growing up watching the 1987 Hallmark version of The Secret Garden, which features it throughout the movie arranged into orchestral score, even, which is hauntingly beautiful. Interesting side-note, Highclere Castle was used as the location of Misthelthwaite Manor, this castle is currently the location for Downton Abbey.

Here's the movie, the arranged nocturne starts right away after Dickon's panpipe intro.

Here are a few I like that I found on Youtube -

Modern player, played a little too slow at points, but it's smooth and beautiful.

Mauricio Pollini playing it as fast as can be while still being tasteful, one of the most consistent performances, though.

From The Pianist. Quite a nice interpretation, similar to #1 above, but more consistent.

Ingrid Fujiko Hemming - the definitive slow version for me. Fantastic, really. This recording is exceptional as well.

Maria João Pires - a very clean technically correct version that is compelling, but lacks a certain something.
