Cheap Open-backed Donor Cans?
« on: March 27, 2015, 02:11:02 AM »

Need a cheap donor shell for my next project. Needs to fit a 55 mm driver.

Angled drivers/lofted earpads helps, but is not necessary if the housing is large enough.

Currently looking at the Nady QH560, maybe a used/broken HD600, SA1/3/5000, ATH-ADx00.

Alibaba/other cheap chinese knockoff shit is welcome too.

Thanks.

Cheap, how much are you willing to spend?

Really, I just put cheap there as an afterthought. I'd be willing to get an HD800 shell if the HD800 wouldn't sound better on its own. So, any price, but cheaper is better.

Actually now that I think about it marv kind of donated his HD800's body to science. Maybe I should ask him what he plans on doing with the shell once he's done experimenting with the drivers...

IIRC the Philips SHP series used fairly large drivers, and they are cheap.

Casper's used the Takstars with AT drivers. They're semi-open, but you can probably grill mod. PM him and ask what he thinks.

My recommendation is the Takstar TS-671: http://www.amazon.com/Takstar-TS-671-Full-open-Quality-Headphones/dp/B00FYII5NC

Cheap, big and open, and easy to open and mod.

But the Takstar HI-2050 is also quite interesting, and allows some dampening measures ... http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4006/takstar-hi-2050-headphones/p1
