I'd hazard a guess that we all qualify as "power users." This is for people who want the thinnest, sleekest lightest notebook that can still do normal stuff - email, web browsing, youtube, netflix. We can all say it's crazy but it is pretty insane to have the retina screen in the thinnest notebook evar and have good battery life. I'm looking forward to the Anandtech test results.
I'm still chuggin along on my 2007 Macbook Pro (upgraded RAM and switched to SSD a while ago). It would be neat to see the MBP w/ Retina get a significant improvement of some sort since it's been more incremental but given my all-out desktop rig I don't have a big need for power on the go.

I didn't realize the keyboard had little to no travel. Yuck. Surface Pro type keyboard is about as far as I'll go in that regard. ZD, I'm surprised to hear your rMBP has inconsistent USB...I thought they were supposed to be good for those sort of purposes based on everything I've read, but I can't say I've had much experience with their Mac line.

So, looks like the only real benefit is the fanless design? Only a matter of time before we see a ton of Core-M Windows tablets and laptops.

There's a post somewhere here where Jason breaks down how things work regarding USB packets in OSX, Windows, and Linux.

I find the best, most consistent audio performance (but also the one that requires the most work to get working with everything) using mpd in Linux and the worst being core audio (any anything else) in OSX. OSX "just works," but performance is crap. Windows requires drivers, Linux "just works" with something like HQPlayer, but requires some handholding if you're futzing with getting mpd on weird streamers. I actually am really impressed by my current volumio streamer than I'm using bedside.

Both lighter and VASTLY more powerful than this, and yet will get almost no media coverage at all. The Apple reality distortion bubble is still in full effect.

You don't understand. No one should ever want more than 12" (that's what she said).

Yeah, Snapple can keep screwing around with Aluminum while IBM/Lenovo's been using Magnesium and Carbon/Kevlar for a good while now. Recycle bin!

I think milled aluminum/magnesium is better than the carbon fiber/kevlar because it is more rigid and better at heat dissipation.
Apple's laptop line is still ahead of competitors, too bad the OS is buggy.

When Tim Cook said he'd been waiting since he was 5 to be able to make phone calls with his watch, and they panned across the audience to show people agreeing and laughing, I stopped watching.

No. Did you click on the link? Aluminum did those units no favors.

I have personal experience with my own 8 year old Thinkpad with a magnesium skeleton surviving the breech of a M1A1 tank slamming down on it. Granted it was in a Pelican case which was destroyed and had to be warrantied, but the laptop preserved it's shape and function for 8 months in the Iraqi desert after that. Not one aluminum product from Apple would have survived that without ending up like a squashed beer can.

Here's a link if anyone wants to attempt the math on the applied force:
http://www.inetres.com/gp/military/cv/weapon/M256.html

Let me know when NASA ever replaces Lenovo with a MacBook as the only official laptop certified for space travel. Where are Apple's ANSI and Milspec certifications?

Try this with a MacBook.

Thinkpad was Steve Jobs target for the MacBook when he went back to Apple, they still haven't caught up and they won't under Tim Cook. MacBook leads nothing in laptops except being the number one fashion accessory for hipsters and maybe PPI (and profit margins, and possibly some of the worst USB and optical output implementation for audio). Woohoo, not impressed.

I wouldn't trust a MacBook product to survive anything beyond the occasional infiltration and exfiltration of a university library.

Because being able to survive the most idiotic of impact tests is more important than having good thermal properties.

There's a number of things you can argue against this particular macbook or Apple products in general, but arguing against the choice of Aluminum is not one of them.

Didn't actually read the post I see. Congratulations. So all the laptops and tablets not made by Apple throughout history are just ticking timebombs doomed to thermal failure. Got it. Good to know Apple is the only company with a thermal management team. I wonder how my 8 year old Thinkpad and Venue 8 Pro are still functioning? Must be God.

Might want to ask every Apple user who ever experienced a cracked screen how 'idiotic' that impact test is.

Nah, I read your post, you shouldn't assume otherwise, we're not children here with next to no attention span.  Even dropping the fanboy bomb while adding a smiley after it, classic.
