Now I'm curious, what is the Chinese forum you're talking about?

I just put "Alientek FY1" into google and clicked "Translate this..." by some links.  I'm tryng to find the one I mentioned earlier but here is one example (not the best):  http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=zh-CN&u=http://www.erji.net/simple/index.php%3Ft1748896.html&prev=search

Does anyone have any "in a nutshell" about any pros and cons of "XMOS USB" vs any other USB controller chip?

Here is a longer thread about this device.  Google translate can be funny to read sometimes ;)

It's not the chips that you have to 'worry' about.
It's their implementation and the parts around it and above all PCB layout and firmware.

Literally hundreds of things may go wrong.
It may even 'brick' after a while...,.  who knows... customer support ?
How long do you want it to last ? Just to see a buggy analyser/scope animation ?

The 192/24 in is a nice feature you don't see in DAC's .
This is more like an external DAC/ADC.

From a technical POV its my (but only MY) opinion that it may possibly sound good enough, even for a K712 which you could possibly drive even to decent levels.

It's not that expensive so if it keeps nagging you... just order it and play with it.

I consider it a toy, like those very small USB soundcards but with a nicer enclosure and an animated display.

I had been looking for a cheap, external DAC to take with me when I travel.  I was looking at the usual suspects, the Monoprice $100 Dac/Amp and a couple of the FiiO products.  If this is of comparable price and suitable performance, it might be a nice trinket to play with.  Doesn't need to be real powerful, even my Samsung G5, Kindle 8.9" HD tablet and old Dell laptop will drive the K712 to usable levels, but I thought if this has even considerable more power than any of those, and a better USB and DAC interface.  I do sometimes video skype too and maybe the ADC might be good.  I dunno...  I probably will just buy (try to buy) one and see for myself.

Honestly I was >this< close to punching the order button for the Monoprice when I found this one, in a youtube search.  The build quality and a real metal knob was appealing.  But to be honest, yeah, pretty lights...

Figure it's US$100.  Would someone tell me they can read Chinese, OR simply say "it's a pretty paper weight" (with the reasoning behind it, preferable) or "looks like a good deal" (and why?)

I found a Chinese user manual but so far no English:  http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=zh-CN&u=http://wenku.baidu.com/view/65c99b27cf84b9d529ea7a38.html&prev=search

It'll probably work 'wel'l under quite a few circumstances. No idea if it has any strange behaviour.

The XMOS input is just a chip + its the drivers and implementation that will make or break it.
It can range between buggy, difficult to use and great depending on the implementation.

To those wanting R2R vintage or an iggy its a paperweight
To those looking for a well supported upgradeable decent DAC its a paper weight.
For those looking for a shiny small cheap solution that may work well on their perfireral equipment it may be great
Those that like the (wortless for real purposes where it would count) animation it may be great.

It depends on WHO you ask.

The chips (except the HA part) it isn't a bad choice.... BUT the chips do NOT matter as much as their implementation, the PCB design etc.

So nobody hear can tell its a paperweight or great sounding handy machine.
There is no experience with it.

If you want a REAL DAC and ADC there are other (but more expensive) alternatives.
If you are looking for cheap and problem free/well documented and people have experience with look elsewhere.
If you think you like it, take the plunge and buy it.
It does have quite a few input options, specs don't look bad (but do they say that much) and various bitrates are supported.

I don't think most pirates will be likely to buy it though unless some guru stated it sounds incredible... little chance of that happeing though.
