Philips Golden Ears Challenge
« on: February 02, 2015, 11:26:59 AM »

http://www.goldenears.philips.com/en/introduction.html

Just finished the complete challenge today. i struggled a lot for some tests but it's quite funny AND  formative. All exercices propose a training and the real challenge and it was sometimes really useful tu use the proposed training in order to be able to complete the Challenge.

I imagine it won't be difficult for experienced people who are used to tweak or mod speakers and headphones but for beginners like me it's really an interesting journey. A bit boring because it needs some time and many challenges are easy. A few tests are a lot more subtle and difficult to win.

Fortunataly it's easy to begin and pause and continue later. I begun last spring , achieved the first level and  a part of the second and forgot it. I came back last week and completed 95% of what I left . I finished today.

I know it's a bit ridiculous for a 43 years old paterfamilias but eh.. i'm proud like a kid  :)p13

Congratulations!

I'd like to say that it is hearing loss that stops me doing stuff like that, but, to be really honest, ...it is laziness. Sure, I don't think my ears have the frequency response to succeed, but I'll never know without trying.

Well done. I do know that this is not like some internet game: it takes application and work. You are entitled to be proud!

 ahoy :money: ahoy :)p7

Thks!   :money:

Yeah for the most difficult challenge it takes application and time (especially training) . At least for me.

Thank you for reminding me of this! I created an account and then forgot to do it. I'm doing it now and enjoying it. I am going to make my class (an introductory audio production class) complete the basic level. The results should be eye opening! I didn't realize they had "certificates" shown for completing a level. This way I can make them submit screenshots of the level completion.  :&

The last time I tried this I really got bogged down in the compression section.  I was using some pretty low-end equipment, so I'm curious to try it again using something a little more resolving.

Thanks for the reminder.

Yup compression and MP3 artifacts is the first real challenging exercice.  I had hard times with it before remembering Purrin and Anaxilus advice : for best critical Listening, listen loud ! .  Then I completed the MP3 test and the one with different level of reverb' ;)

For some other challenge the  salvation is not in loudness  :)p8

finished this a while back with $20 sony cans. Its pretty easy if youve been working with eq before, setting up rooms, music production, etc...

Yep , I imagine indeed? But the interest here is IMO more to learn than to win. Many people like me didn't not work in music production or didn' work on any room treatment. Then this game enlights many things to our naive ears :)

I completed it March last year.

I found some of the Golden challenges rather difficult and had quite a few repetition there, the first three challenges were easy though.

I consider myself an experienced listener and i tell you the Golden stage wasn't a walk in the park.
