Anyone into smart watches? Most of the smart watches I've seen so far don't even try to style like normal watches. I wasn't interested at all. So when I spotted the Huawei watch I was immediately interested.

While it doesn't scratch my particular horological itch, here is another traditional looking smartwatch that has similar looks:

Montblanc also has a band that adds smartwatch features to traditional watches:

The Huawei watch does look like a good option at that price point though.

My big 2016 early midlife crisis/oh god I'm alive purchase is coming up.

I'm looking to finally try on one of these soonish:

FP Journe:

the movement's all in gold, to remind you of all that you have lost

plus $2,300 every 5 years or so for service

but a truly high end, hand made watch designed by a man who is what A.L. Breguet would be if he were alive today.

I asked someone at their boutique what happens when Journe dies. She was totally unconcerned. There is a plan and it won't involve selling out to Swatchgroup or what-have-you. Good to know.

Rolex dd40, Super high tech manufacturing meets Swiss people putting things together by hand. The new Rolex movement is pretty great--they made their own proprietary lubricants--who does that? 10 years between service intervals, basically a very tough watch that's very accurate for an automatic.

and the bracelet is shiny.

and the Breguet Marine is still on my radar. I managed to gnaw at Breguet until they admitted an unannounced update to the Marine 5817's movement, replacing the hairspring with a silicon one, improving the anti-magnetism and bringing the accuracy up to chronometer standards, whee.

Looks good with leather, yeah?

Of those three, I've only seen the Breuget in person.  It is stunningly beautiful and a classic.

I doubt you would go wrong with the Journe either.  I'll have to check them out someday.

Please let us know whatever you get.

They just announced Sept 17th availability and options/pricing. Pre-orders also opened up today at their own page, www.gethuawei.com, best buy, amazon, and google's store.

Basic steel + leather is $350 up to gold plate with matching bracelet at $800.

Given the more classical styling (vs other smart watches) it seems to be worth the price. I think I will get a steel with bracelet (links, not mesh) at $400, though the black with bracelet looks very nice as well. I don't think the black would look good on my wrist, however.

I like that it is a slightly bigger case than my Certina (39 vs 42), but quite a bit smaller than the Moto360 (46mm).

The Huawei is interesting, IMO the first smart watch that's even remotely attractive. The Apple watch just looks like a tiny iPhone, with absolutely absurd pricing for the gold version. The Android watches until now have just missed the mark in one area or another. The Moto 360's "flat tire" on the bottom is an immediate no go. Yes otherwise their bezels are smaller than the competition, but that slice off the bottom just ruins the entire thing, so who even cares?

Critically, the Huawei also uses a Sapphire crystal, so it should last awhile. Some of the others have Gorilla glass which is better than nothing, but still nowhere near as good at scratch resistance. And some of them are using plastic (!) on the screen which will likely get ruined within weeks. If your watch display needs a screen protector, you've failed.

The 2nd Gen Moto360 is also offering a 42mm size, but it still has the flat tire for the light sensor, and unlike the huge and ugly LG Watch Urbane, the Hauwei's bezels are tight enough for Moto to have no real advantage there. I also like that they put real thought into the watch faces, making them look as close to high-end automatics as possible on a digital screen. As opposed to say, a Mickey Mouse face.

Not to give anything anyway, yet, but I'm currently undergoing a worldwide hunt for a limited edition discontinued watch.  Wish me luck.

Small update, I tried on the Journe, it's beautiful in real life. You can actually see the escapement working in the all 18k rose gold movement!

@ Dave

The only thing I worry about regarding the Huawei is thickness. See this shot of a guy with smallish wrists wearing one:

Hey guys,

I'm looking for a new watch with the same general look--simple / plain--as my (third) Timex Easy Reader. But it has to be quiet, so maybe automatic? Date function optional. Price: under 1k.

I'm having a hard time because I need one that's on the smaller side. My Timex' case is 35 mm. I went to a local jeweler to try on some Hamiltons and, at 40 mm, they were all too big. I could probably go up to 38.

What comes to mind? Thanks.
