Cool thread. My personal favorite: J-L Reverso Tourbillon. Time keeping is secondary, this thing is pure mechanical art.

Aside from various Reversos, I've also really got a thing for off beat regulators, particularly those with retrograde elements.

Watches are fun. Choosing one based on pictures is not a good idea though, it's the same concept as buying a pair of shoes or a shirt- you have to try it on. The only two things I've found helpful in narrowing down the choices for a beginner are dial size and budget.

For a first "real" watch I'd usually recommend picking something from the more established watch brands, not luxury brands like Bvlgari and Tudor (this is akin to me warning you not to buy a Bose). There are exceptions like Cartier, and obscure brands like Corum that are better saved for later, but for a first watch you can't go wrong with the classic brands.

If you're looking for something cheap and pretty though, this website has some good stuff:

If you must have a skeleton watch that is see-through from the front (like the one dave posted) then stay far away from the big brands. I made the same mistake when I started out, and then realized that most of them were Tourbillon, which translates to "terribly expensive".

I've always been ambivalent about even the simplest complications. (God, I just wanted to write that, but it's true on so many levels!) I'm thinking of things like the second hand and the date, not the phase of the moon. They're useful* but they add clutter.

The second hands on automatics, however, have that artful glide; and I can never remember the date on my own.

* In college, my lab partner and I were the only team to get perfect results, thanks in part to my Timex' second hand.

Has anyone seen this in person?

It's Romaine Jerome's $300,000 dual tourbillion watch that only tells day and night.

I made fun of it to a watch person and he was like "oh no, it's beautiful" in person. So, I got told. Now, I'd like to see one sometime.

Pretty cheap for a dual tourbillon, may just as well buy it. Who is going to care about the looks at such a bargain price ;-).

Wow, it really does look like a malevalent tank or spaceship or something. Something a robot gentleman villain would wear.

I pulled the trigger on the Raymond Weil Automatic and I couldn't be happier.

Nice looking Ray Weil!  Respect for not grabbing a "cookie cutter" automatic.

Clean lines, textured face, pomme hands, and it even matches your shirt. Congrats!
