Watch thread

Kunlun:
I needed a new watch the other day and ended up with an automatic (self-winding with the motion of your arm, no battery needed).

A Kenneth Cole automatic
In person it has a classic sort of look, and a nice choice for my first automatic for daily wear. Naturally, I'm already thinking of upgrading someday to something like this

a Raymond Weil Maestro automatic, very classic. It's 10 times the price of the Kenneth Cole I bought, though...

You're welcome to share what you have or what you'd like to have.

Now we only need a bag thread...

I wear a Maratac Red Pilot Mid.

funkmeister:
Ooh... automatics have always facinated me. I'm still in my rut though. I buy my watches like I buy audio gear: new, inexpensive, and worth every penny.

Rockin' a Timex Expedition. It punches above its weight only needing a time tweak twice a year. It's always within 30 seconds of coordinated time so I just tweak it when DST rears its ugly head.

Claritas:
Congrats Kunlun, and thanks for starting the thread.

I get a new Timex Easy Reader every 5 years or so because they get scratched up, but I'm always vaguely on the look out for an upgrade. I just never find anything I like that much more for under a grand.

But yeah, I like the look of several expensive watches. My favorite is the simplest Breguet Classique. The simplest Jaeger Le Coutre Master is similar and a few grand less--but it's not a Breguet. The Grand Seiko is similar but much more and, again, not a Breguet. Hamilton American Classics look good too. All are basically the luxury version of my Timex in looks.

(Incidentally, there's a fine collection of old Breguets in Jerusalem, in the basement of the Islamic Museum of all places, donated by a Jewish collector; I don't remember why he housed his collection there.)

If I were an engineer or a scientist like my old man, I'd want an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. I think the geometric bezel with the screws looks just right for those professions. And the textured face complements the chunkiness and starkness of the bezel.
