I have to use up an AKD23P board I have sitting here first. Then I want to upgrade to the Buffalo III next. Should I skip it and go with an AK based DAC? Pros/Cons of the two?

Hey - I commented on this in another thread, but thought I'd chime in here. Wait on any AK DAC efforts; I have some proto AK boards using the latest AK chips landing this month. When we have finals, they'll be available on JLSounds. We're pushing to get these far enough along for CES - AKM wants to demo it in their suite.
