^X1 is a warm/fun complement (bass is bloomy) to the HD600/HD800 that is also comfy and pretty easy to run straight off my phone or laptop for convenience (MacBook Air needs Geek Out to power it properly though).  I really like the X1 with Geek Out > Fong's Out Of Your Head software and watching movies, for example.  I have Geek Outs 450, 720, 1000 to ensure I can run my cans from my laptop.

The HD600 always surprises me out of different amps and how I can appreciate them.  Don't see a need to ever get rid of them- they are just classics and good to keep around.  Try to get HD580, HD600, HD650 in the same room and see that they seem to be tweaks of each other. Nowhere near as clean or resolving as the HD800, but they can be great to listen to music with and they feel familiar to me like a favorite old jacket or pair of shoes...you just put them on and try to go about your business.

The AKG K7XX is lightweight and comfy too (all three are comfy and slightly different feeling), LONG cable makes it great to plug in at a desk or laptop and move around but less easy to stuff in the pocket with a player.  I find the sound nicely warm/easy-going with some sources/amps, the Sony I have in particular.  It seems to be good or better at times for me, but then not pair well with certain items (Vali) or music sometimes (there can be a peak up top that can stick out).  Not sure yet, but at the price/weight/comfort of the AKG- I will take some time to know them better and see what I think over the long term.

I have a lot of filled headphone hooks right now, so the prospect of possible X2 and selling both the X1 and K7XX is a bit appealing...  What you like will depend upon your important factors and the place that they will fill in your line-up, I think.  They all have their strengths if you want a good mid-fi can at a reasonable price.

Thanks CEE TEE, that's an enlightening response. Looks like the HD600 remains the safest, all-rounder--I like it too, just itching to have something similar with wider soundstage.

Hey all. Short term lurker, 1st time poster here.  ahoy

I finally got to give the X2 a spin today and thought some people might be interested in my totally unsubstantiated personal impressions vs the HD600s.

  • Wider soundstage
  • Emphasized bass, treble a touch more sparkly and pronounced than the HD600, mildly U-shaped with a tilt downwards from the low end
  • Decent sounding mids, although the emphasized bass pushes them back a bit so they're less forward than the HD600. Still sound good, though. Much more natural sounding than the X1.
  • They're big! Holy crap. My head is a touch south of average size so I generally have problems with suspension headbands. X2 is no exception and the loose fit & having the cups resting on the tops of my ears was mildly vexing

As someone who didn't particularly enjoy the X1s due their smearing everything with warmth I found myself pleasantly surprised by the more balanced X2. They don't quite match the HD600s for that pure, natural sound (seriously, I still love the way the Sennheisers absolutely nail vocals) but I can see why some people wanting a more lively, "fun" sound that doesn't squeeze all the life out of the mids (I'm looking at you, Beyerdynamic) would be more than happy with these. If only they weren't so damn huge ...

^^ Yes, the headband is ridiculously large. You will looking completely stupid wearing. I advise that you DO NOT wear these around any potential love interest. Although Tyll seems to appreciate the larger headband. His head must be enormous!!

Funnily enough that was my first thought upon catching sight of my own reflection. I imagined my girlfriend walking in, recoiling in horror and me being all like

These are very sweet an charming headphones! ( At least when listening at moderate and low sound levels, as I personally nearly always do).

Maybe they even are too good-sounding in a way, since sweet and funny sound can distract somewhat from the music itself ( as opposed to monitor-ish sound).  By louder levels the looseness of the bass can become bothersome, and the charming spaciousness may start to feel a tad too resonant in character in the long run (who knows).

Prolly not the 1st choice among the dubstep crowd.

But rather the type of cans you may feel tempted to buy to your girlfriend/partner (to make her/him better understand your obsession with sound?) and/but will end up listening to yourself most of the time, when home alone... And after beginning to feel a slight envy every time she is listening to music with a smile on her face, how long will you be able to suppress the impulse to go out and buy another unit for yourself?  (You could always say you need it for modding purposes).

All in all, I can fully understand why the big T(yll) put them up on his Wall of Fame.

Short resume of my impressions:

Strongest point: Bass. You can hear and feel bass by low levels.
Weakest point:  Bass . By loud levels too loose + a tad too much of it.

Cheers, Olaf  ( pirate, lower decks).
