Controller to use on PC.
« on: October 29, 2014, 06:40:13 PM »

Always wanted to have a gamepad and with upcoming Steam sales later this year, i'm looking at some games where it might be handy to have one.

Thinking about getting either Xbox One or PlayStation 4 controller. From what i've read, internal changes and supposed improvements in ergonomics warrant dismissing Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 controllers. I'm not really interested in Logitech controllers either - both models are quite old (from 2010), looks a bit weird, cheap and unappealing to me.

I'll be primary using gamepad in wired mode, so i don't really care about it wireless performance (looks like it's only DS4 anyways). I was initially looking more at DualShock 4 because of parallel dual analog sticks, which to me looks more natural and right in a sense (using both sticks with the thumbs, please remember i never ever used gamepads before). Then i search the size comparison between it and Xbone controller and was a bit shocked at how big DS4 was compared to it. Not sure if it's gonna be an issue, coupled with it supposedly inferior ergonomics compared to Xbone controller (still improvement from DS3).

So i'm not really sure which one will do it - both have some things to them that i like, but none ticks more boxes then the other. I guess if Microsoft controller had parallel dual analog sticks, i'd get it in a heartbeat.

Looking for thoughts of someone who might have tried or held both in hands. Maybe i'll try to search in the local electronic stores to see if their have either of new consoles on display - might have a chance to actually tried controllers

Haven't got much experience with the Dual Shock controllers, just held them at the store and they don't fit my hands quite as naturally as the XBOX ones, however, the XBone controller is miles ahead of the 360 one, I own both and the 360 controller feels clunky and imprecise in comparison, and that's not taking into account the abysmal D-Pad in the 360 one. I think you could get used to the offset analog sticks.

I used an XB1 controller briefly, not a fan of the shoulder buttons. My DS3 is more comfortable, but I do have very small hands.

You should find out if the QC has been improved on the recent XB1/DS4 controllers, they've been really bad, and I had to return mine (XB1) because of one of the shoulder buttons was very loose. The DS4 is known to have thumb sticks that fall apart quickly, and both suffer from sticky triggers.

I want a gamepad for my pc too, I was waiting for the steam gamepad but it seems like it became vaporware :(  I was looking at the ps3 controller but all the drivers seem pretty hacky, I kind of wanted something with official windows support.  also, I hate microsoft/xbox

Also be aware that controller converters exist.  Basically any converter to PS3 would be really all you need (converters to 360 would work too but are more expensive and harder to get).

For instance.  PS2 to PS3 converter for about $5 and you can use most any ps1-ps2 controller on your PC.

Another consideration is pressure sensitivity.  PS3, Xbox 360 and up I want to say have pressure sensitive buttons so your PC probably won't like a half pressed 360 trigger button.

I just use a 360 controller.  Works fine and like the layout for older games cause I like to play older snes games on my pc and the layout on the 360 is very similar to the snes controller but better feeling. Never liked the ps3 controller cause it's too small and light and one having big hands and use to lifting heavy stuff I like stuff to have weight to feel more natural.  The ps4 controller is hell lot better than the ps3 and has the perfect size and weight distribution but for certain games I noticed(well in the past) that support for sony controller can be limited and some games will not pick it up. The 360 controller has endless support due to fact it's a "Microsoft" product.

Used the Xbox one controller once at the store and despite Microsoft's silly " billion dollar nasa research" I thought it felt weird and too light compared to the 360 basic controller. If it was me I would just get the 360 controller since it's much cheaper than spending 60 to 80 bucks for the newer console controllers and in my opinion probably as good as it's going to get for price and feel. 360 is just plug and play too and basically every single game supports it. You can get them locally for like 15 bucks. Never used Logitech controllers but they all look like an identical ps3 controller.

No. The 360 D-Pad can't compete with the SNES D-Pad, hell, it doesn't even compete with the older Sidewinder gamepads that Microsoft released in the 90s. Don't use the 360 controller for oldschool platformers or anything requiring a modicum of precision in control (shmups anyone?).

Works fine for me. I been using one for over few years. Don't remember about feel of snes remote but know the abxy button about the same layout so it's easier for me. My brother is the gamer, not me. Next time I see him I try the snes controller for old time sake.

Yeah, the layout's good, but the D-Pad is atrocious, maybe OK for casual games, but I dare you to play Tetris Attack with that poo.

Only games I love on snes is super metroid, mega man x series,  legend of zelda, ect. Few more games I like too but having brain fart right now. Actually like Tetris but only owned it on my gameboy when I was younger. I give that Tetris attack a try.
