I really liked the LCD3 I heard at RMAF so I doubt any of the early impressions were from actually veiled LCD3s. Those must have been preproduction carefully made headphones where the veiled ones were the first production run. This would explain the lag time in veil discovery.

I don't think they knew. The pairs that Audeze brought to the Irvine meet after RMAF were veiled. No one was impressed, except for me slightly because I liked the smooth FR.

@ purrin

I do remember that people got flamed for saying that the didn't like the LCD-2 but until this veil issue with the LCD-3 I don't remember it being attributing to sample variation very often.  IIRC most people on both sides seemed to shoot it down every time it was brought up and assume they were all perfect or all sucked.

In hindsight, the variation explanation should have been almost obvious. But $2000 clouds judgement.

Actually I thought I mentioned the veil first at the Irvine meet and then referenced the Senn veil on the threads for comparison.  I remember you all standing out in the parking lot being polite about how the LCD3 was 'decent' and not worth the money.  I said they fucking sucked.  Till you got your good set I'm pretty sure I've hated the LCD3 more than anyone.

LFF was certainly not a fan.

That's what I thought it was but since I've only ever heard one pair and all the LCD-2s that Tyll measured looked pretty close I couldn't really advance that hypothesis.

Everything seems obvious in hindsight though.  People's impressions vary wildly with every headphone.  Assuming it was unit to unit variation without solid evidence would have been unfair.  Different preferences still probably accounts for a good amount of the variation in impressions.

Hmm, are you sure the pairs they brought to that meet were veiled?  It seems odd that they would bring their worst sounding pairs to a meet they knew would draw a lot of attention for the LCD3 in particular.  From what I remember, most people at the meet actually did like them; I think it was pretty much the parking lot people that didn't like them much and the rest of the attendees did.  Now I gotta reread that thread. :p

Well, don't know if you witnessed this, but I had a hell of a time appreciating them in front of Sankar.  When he saw my agitated face he tried to readjust the fit and I began to think my ears and face were interacting w/ the squishy pads.  Didn't like it at all.  Alex went and disappeared for an hour or two and suddenly a second LCD3 showed up.  I didn't hear that one but purrin tells me it sounded the same.  I think most of the favor some of the non parking lot folk had for the LCD3 was the Zebrawood and $2000 worth of kit on the head.  Seriously, the mids made the Senn 'viel' sound like a window into the music.  Same as the TP'd pair w/o TP.
