Yeah, I was getting a rather painful shoutiness with female vocals (Stevie Nicks).  I presume it's from the 8k peak preceded by the massive recessed trough.

That's my best guess as well. It can sound a bit bright with some material.

LOL! could be a measurement artifact to some extent, but recession does seem to exist in the upper mids relative to other cans, also going by what we are hearing.

The 600's look pretty smooth in comparison to the other two.

It's all relative... but yeah. Trade offs...

Something to point out about these cans... or maybe the SRM-323S amp.

At 100 dB the SRM-323S + SR-307 combo seem to struggle in the treble area. Distortion increases to about 1% for the right channel and about .6% in the highs, but it's all kinds of high order harmonics:

Note also the distortion measurements don't go too high in frequency, but they seem to be increasing for the Stax combo as frequency increases...

HD600 struggles in the bass area at high SPL (100 dB), but the highs seem relatively clean of high order harmonics:

It's the amp, they did the same treble nastiness to my ESP950s as I increased SPL.  I think it would be wise if Stax could replace this loaner 323S with a proper functioning one.
