Without going too far into generalization, how would you compare the "UA sound" vs "PCM1704 sound"?

The M7 meet my lower threshold for softness/punch and details. The SA-2 was slightly too soft at both ends. Any other Audio-gd 1704 DAC were too soft/mellow for me.

I would mind something softer (don't read smooth, I like smooth) or less detailed. Not ready to give that up. I want smooth/dynamic/holographic/punchy sound.

The UA DACs can growl, bite, and punch. Kind of like this:

and leave things like this:

Well, actually the last one is more like the Thetas of yore. But you get the idea. It's closer to that than not.  It's not always like that, and implementations do vary, but I am pointing what it is capable of.

PCM1704 is more like this:

or this:

The D20400A might be out of production, but PartsConnexion are offering a pin-equivalent R2R replacement for the D20400A with reputedly better specs. Has anyone gotten their hands on one of these before?

Sorry about the thread necro, but I think this is still the most suitable spot to post this.

I finally got the partsconnexion module installed in my Parasound DAC-2000. The overall character of the DAC hasn't changed, but I think I'm picking up details more easily than before. My old D20400A module did have a high noise floor even when it was working (i.e. not distorting horribly) though.

I had mine replaced in my SFD-1 and as with you, I do think it is slightly more resolving while maintaining same sonic character. Hard to say if it's better if the the old part was dying.
