This looks interesting! Is it a similar concept to the Project H?
http://www.head-fi.org/t/652306/diy-custom-amplifier-and-dac-project-h
Wow, someone actually remembers our project!!!

Isn't there also the issue of the O2's license not allowing derivative PCBs based off it? I also thought the general consensus on CS was that the O2 wasn't in line with very many member's tastes...

Yeah, I would have loved to have participated in that project!

I never really fell for the Objective thing, but I was very interested to hear the combo for myself. I finally did and thought it didn't sound bad, but it didn't sound that good either.

I used to think that the Objective 2 amp was the best thing until I actually built it. Then again it is very viable to build these commercially as most of the advertising is done for you. Must be the reason why I sold mine for 100$ profit.

I say - do opamp driven discrete buffers, instead of the opamp mantrain.

It just sounds lifeless really, but then again its probably better than most onboard soundcards.

That's definitely true.  I suppose we can say that building an amp to excel at rudimentary specs means it won't suck.

Hideouspride this seems like a great idea, I think a lot of people are turned off by the combo o2/odac hideous enclosure and having the ports on the wrong sides.  For a later project maybe you should get with agdr on diyaudio he has a design for an objective desktop amp that is pretty mature already

Thanks for that. Agree that the casing could be much more attractive, and to be honest I feel one of the legitimate considerations for many people these days are the aesthetics. Will's handling the DIY audio section for now, I'll definitely ask him to keep an eye out for AGDR's project as it looks like they've already put a lot of work into it.

It's one of those interesting things I've learned since starting at the company. Part of it is sourcing products I really like and am passionate about (CustomArt Harmony 8 Pro), but another portion of it is just delivering exactly what the community wants (ATH-M50x, O2/ODAC). It's an interesting balancing act.

The O2/ODAC was actually my first starting point after reading up on so many of the positive things said about them. Listened to a Fostex HP-A8C some time later and revised what I thought. It may very well be the Beats by Dre of the DAC/amps, and I guess that's fine with us. If it serves as an initial springboard for some to explore the field of DACs and amplifiers, there's definitely value to be found in having the product on our site.

The problem with the springboard idea is that FiiO latest products are actually better.
E18 for thicker sound, E17k for leaner more forward - stemps from OPA642 vs AD4970 difference. DAC is actually noticeably better in E18 - while E17k is worse DAC than ODAC, E18 is comparable.
Leckerton w/ OPA209 is on the leaner side without the forward part, 2x more expensive with a really outdated DAC part.
For the $150 it costs (vs $300 for Leckerton), it is a winner.
