Hi:

I actually missed this when surveying the threads before I posted my first post.  I am Bixby on almost all the forums, and have been in audio since my dad was selling RCA and Zenith consoles back in the early 70s.  Sold audio for years on the East coast, Seattle, and Texas, but please do not hold that against me.

Started my audio journey back in high school with Marantz, Dynaco, Sherwood, Garrard, and more.  I tend to lean towards sound signatures that are a bit warmer and less analytical, although I have had my times with Thiel and some really bright rooms.  I currently have a mixed (tube -SS) speaker setup that still mostly satisfies with Decibel, Mac Mini, Matrix X-Sabre, deHavilland Tube preamp, Bel Canto power, and some long discontinued SP Technologies Timepiece monitors.

Currently using Linux laptop, Wyrd, HRT II+, Lake G109S and Mad Dogs.  I have heard a fair amount of stuff over the years, yet remain somewhat middle of the road with my own purchases due to budget.  I only rec or comment one way or the other on stuff I have actually heard.

I hope to be able to contribute and learn.  From my short time lurking this is a very hospitable place, indeed.

FYI, I have been at every RMAF since its inception and hope to meet some of you folks there.

Hey everyone! Not really a new member, been here since the last year, but never introduced myself to you guys.

My name is Darko and I'm from Serbia. I am a sociology student, philosophy & science lover (but not in that stupid, agressive, internet way), mixed martial arts fanatic (PRIDE never dies), former judoka and luta livre practitioner, coffee lover, and the most important for this forum, amateur music producer and mixing engineer.

After having problems with my Sennheiser HD215 i looked for some help on head-fi but got no responses, or very few of them, without anything useful. Somehow I found out about changstar and it blew my mind how awesome you guys are. Meanwhile, I was searching for some new headphones, and you guys helped me tremendously, not just about what to pick, but about overal understanding of them. This forum is a treasury of down to earth headphone knowledge. And not just that, when I found what I want, I couldn't get it here, so one of changstar members, Deep Funk, helped me and sent me Koss KSC75 from Netherlands, and not just that, he sent me K400 also... for FREE (both)! As a present to have a good audiophile starter kit. Big ups for him once again, amazing guy.

I will write reviews for headphones i currently have, since I couldn't find the topics, if they exist, please redirect me.

Sennheiser HD 215:

My first serious pair of headphones. Their resolution is very good, very detailed, however, they lack some solid low end, and they are closed, so they are kind of honky. They have nice top end, very bright, which I loved. I mentioned they lack solid low end, but they react very well to EQ, so I mostly used them equalised, and they can go very low, reproduce 30hz easily (especially with EQ, without it it's there, but it's just to low). They are big, but one of the most comfort headphones I've ever used. You can wear them for hours and you won't feel them. They have awesome isolation, so they are perfect if you are in a noisy environment. Built is very quality and very durable, they fell on the flor so many times and survived like it was nothing, plus they are extremly elastic. However, there was one problem I noticed after some time, one side was sounding different then the other, it just had more bass in it. I thouhgt I blew out one driver, but Solderdude measured his friend's HD215 and he found out the same problem, so it might be a problem with them in general, but I'm not sure. Also, they are good for DJ-ing, but not very for mixing, which was the main reason why I bought them first.

AKG K400

I will be short on them. Amazing mid frequency range headphones. They lack low end, and a bit of a top, kind of like that old open earbuds, but their mid range is incredibly detailed. You can notice badly mixed mids on them easily. That was the case with many electronic music songs, but when I played, for example, Hurts - Happiness, albumt that incredible Spike mixed, everything was clear. They have, kind of, a bit of bump on mids, so I like to compare them to Yamaha NS10 monitors, it's like a headphone version. I like checkin my mixes on them.

Koss KSC75

The best pair of headphones I've ever had or listened to! Really! I've read all the posts about them, but was sceptic, especially looking at their price. Deep Funk mentioned many times that he listens to music on them mostly, and that he sold many more expencive headphones because of them. It wasn't clear to me why, until he sent me a pair. WOW! Everything sounds right, from the bottom to the top, and the drums are realistic and punchy(!) which was very important to me. Had a chance to listen to audio technica ath-m50, and from what I heard, I like drums more on KSC75. Love them and use them for music production/mixing, listening to music, watching movies, everything! The only two things I wish were better are: 1. higher resolution. They are detailed, b ut I wish they were just a bit more. 2. deeper low end. low end is nice and deep, but i would like if it was just a bit deeper, so you can hear 30hz just like 80hz for exapmle. So, if you know any model that has identical freq response, but it's more detailed and has a deeper low end PLEASE recommend! They are kind of soft too, which is good for listening to music, but I have problem with them hearing distortion when I'm mixing, so I check that with my other headphones. Anyway, overall, they are great! Especially for that price!

Samson SR850 (Superlux HD668b)

I had such a hard time finding this one, they are sold out everywhere! I don't know what to think about them, they are very good for sure, especially looking at the price, but for mixing they just have too much low end, and kind of recessed mids. People complain about their top end and sibilance, and yes, they have a bit higher top end, but not sibilance, I actually find the top end pleasant, but I'm a treblehead. :P Aslo, top end is not fatiguing at all! So if you're concerned about their top end, but you're a treblehead, don't bother with it, you'll probably like it (I like it a lot!). The drums on them are not that punchy, don't know why, it seems like they have a hole at 200hz-300hz which explains why some people call them cold (200-300 is the warm-mud area). I didn't find them cold at all! Not cold, not dull headphones at all, however for mixing, I don't think they are very good, but if they are your only option, give them a shot! It's about learning your headphones, and using analyzers best you can (IXL and PAZ are awesome, I use SPAN too). Just have something to switch back and forth, for example cheap cellphone earbuds and cheap speakers. After all, have mixed emotions about them. Low end is very deep actually and I recommend them to bassheads. Edit: re-listened to them. They are very good! Can't judge them in the way I did for the price they are, and they actually sound like double of their price at least. Went to harsh on them.

Yeah, call me crazy, but I love this one! :P They are not most detailed, they don't go lowest, but they are so well balanced! I find them so usefull for mixing, love them. And the most important, I just can hear distortion on them perfectly. If you find them, give them a shot! P.S. I use to check my mixes on them, my speakers (microlab solo 2) and laptop speakers, check your songs on many things and compare them to your favourite songs on them. Find whats different in your mixes comparing to pros, and use analyzers often, but ears in first place!

Woo! That was a long one!

Hope you are all doing well! :) Cheers!

KSC-75s really highlight diminishing returns in this hobby.  You can spend 10 or 20 times more and get something a lot worse..

Hi everyone,

Been a home stereo guy since forever, recently got into personal audio since I cannot go loud during the AM hours (I get home very late!).

Very informative, concise and non-biased(to a certain degree ;) ) posting habits here and I like that very much!

BTW, I love the measurement section on the modded and non-modded variants of 'phones  :)p13

Cheers!
