Looking for advice on buying a DAC for the rest of my days. Tired of hearing the usual marketing hype talk.
Can somebody point me in the right direction?

Hope this helps:

How much money do you got? What do you currently use? What else do you like? Need context.

I like live music recordings. Jazz, Classical, Rock.
I like  a thick, live-like, in the middle of things with a punch - sound; If this makes sense.
I have a lot of listening experience and have come a long way.

90s: Rega, Linn, Naim….  AKG 1000/BAP1000 Audiosphere

Then I had a long break from listening properly until last year;
Started again with AKG 702s but found them way too bright (Perhaps my preferences have changed). Even listening to Senheiser HD800 although very resolving cans - they are too bright and detailed for me.
So I bought the LCD-2s [with Toxic cable upgrade] which I am quite happy with and actually prefer them to the other Audeze cans.
The amp/dac is the Hugo [via Audiophilleo 2 SPDIF/USB].  Which was fine for a while as I needed a portable rig.
But I am missing something and getting tired of listening very quickly.
I also ordered the Cavalli Audio Liquid Carbon - but thinking about that - I would only hear the Hugo amplified and that wouldn't be solving my problem.
Hey I know what you think about the Hugo but I can't stand the sound of the Sabre chips - sorry…

So - I am willing to spend around $3000 for the Dac upgrade. But I am getting lost in all that hype.
I am currently looking at NOS Dacs again…

Thanks for your advice,

Joe

I have a BIG question with regards to the Yggy.
What's the deal with the "3 weeks warm-up" time.
You guys probably  have a lot more experience with this machine. How long does it really take?
Those guys on HF seem to be all over the place, because nobody knows what to expect …

7 days seems about right. flipping the bits (playing music so D-A chips work) may speed the process.

Definitely the wrong thread....

This was in the first link I sent you.

http://www.audiostream.com/content/audioquest-white-paper-evaluation-digital-devices-and-proper-warm-ideal-listening-and

Now, the chips in the Yggy and femto clocks used by others do have a stated ideal operating temp range at which their accuracy becomes optimal and stable. That said, the Yggy doesn't sound bad out of the box like the hand built prototypes did. It will improve though. Or sound like an ODAC depending on your predisposition.

But yes, if you have further questions, please use the DAC forum or all purpose advice thread.

My name's Kevin and I'm a Changstar newbie.

I'm here now because I was treated poorly over on Head-Fi when I asked to help organize a Denver meet last month.

I've quickly realized Head-Fi is for selling / buying, advertising, etc. but not for sharing / learning with the headphone community.

It's all about the cash over there and not the community...

That's why I made the switch.

Hi,

My name is Min and I'm new here.
I used to be very active on Head-fi a few years ago but then life hit me and had to focus on other things (i.e. new gf).
During that time, I went through all the high-end gear that was around then (AKG 1000, Grado PS1, R10, HE90, Sony Qualias, Balancing Act).
Eventually got to a good place with some mostly vintage gear (akg1000, grado rs1, spectral 2000 dac, pioneer m22, hd800, schiit lyr2).
Recently, I got the itch again and want to see what's new.

It's nice to see the communities grow and the quality of the gear you get the for money grow as well.

I don't know much about the current stuff out there but if anyone has any questions about the older stuff I can chime in.

Thanks,
Min
