Like you purrin hate K3003 but sparrow loves it.

To be fair, as I know Marv pretty well IRL, it's not so much that he hates the K3003. People read into his critique too passionately as is often the case and overlooked some fair points IMHO. Here, what normal people think sounds okay, we tend to think sounds shit. Above average gear is mediocre. The reference bar here is usually ridiculous high (usually end game worthy as in there is nothing left out there worthy). But considering what people charge for audio gear these days, it's no longer that ridiculous to offer such a critique. We also like to recommend gear that is a notable upgrade and not the infamous sidegrade pattern of hype and lunacy that you'd find elsewhere.

Back to the 3003, it's not so much he hated the 3003 as he hates messing with stuff that takes 20 steps to sound decent or pretty good. I'll tell him, try these tips, oh you need these filters, or this or that and he's pretty much had it. He'll take a Shure 215 that takes two simple steps to use and doesn't make him go treble deaf over a flagship universal that requires 20 experimental procedures to tweak and tune just right.

IEMs for Marv means he couldn't bring his speakers with him, and he needs something to not go crazy while away from home. It's not really his cup of tea under any ideal circumstance if I may say.

*It appeared from purrin's comments that he really don't like 3003. Thanks Anax for clarifying things.

I'd say it's fair to set high standards if possible. I can think of an analogy (though many may find it inappropriate): the headphone is like a car and the amp/dac/whatever is like the driver. Think of end-game gear like a F1-level car/driver. I'd say every one F1 car is a piece of engineering art. And F1 drivers to be excellent too. Simply brilliant. But does this make the car/driver a good F1 level one, or even a champion? No, absolutely. The car needs to be better, and significantly better than other cars, and paired with a matchingly good driver, to be a champion combo.

But, the headphone business is not like the 2003 F1 under Ferrari2002/2003GA+Schumacher. There is no fixed combination, and there is no absolute champion car/driver. People are free to call their favourite. Their personal best. But when one takes into consideration that there are things to be measured, and there are some issues that a majority of experienced enthusiasts agreed upon, there comes the high standards (at least that's what I understand here).

And naturally IEMs vs full-size cans is just like F1 vs. LeMans. I don't really think that's a meaningful comparison. IMHO the same goes for headphones vs. speakers.

Do not forget Kimi Räikkönnen.

Mika was better. Still love the Iceman though.

We definitely believe everyone has a right to their opinion here. We do not, however, believe all opinions are right. There's plenty of subjective information that can be parsed and conveyed outside of basic measurements. This is neither a measurements over everything site, nor is it a site where everything sounds good just because someone likes it.

Agreed on Mika Häkkinen. When talking with my friends about F1 we were so fed up with "Schumacher this" and "Schumacher that".

Records are cool. Good stories are cooler and Kimi and Mika had more stories.

Reminds of people who said Emmit Smith was a better RB than Walter Payton cuz Dallas had a freaking huge O-line where Emmit could run straight up the middle unmolested.

Hello! Long time observer. Thought I should introduce myself as I joined the site recently.  ahoy

My name is carlos and I'm currently living in Oakland, California. My curiosity with headphones started in music school when I was teenager and later in college, when I was introduced to some classic Sennheisers and Beyerdynamics. Despite this I could not afford decent gear so I spent years admiring.

After living in Japan for a few years in the late 2000's, I was exposed to the incredible audio culture in Tokyo and finally got a couple of decent head/earphones. I have lurked around a few forums since then but due to grad school had to take a a break for the past couple of years. Now I am back looking around and it has been quite fun!

Mostly into music but really love to listen to phones I have not heard before and rediscover my music collection! Happy to get involved with this forum  :)p5
