Hey all,

Been a lurker, here and there, for quite some time.  Policies at another forum have been prompting me to look elsewhere for comradery and I finally decided to join when changstar turned out to be the first (only?) forum with any measurements at all on the AKG K7XX.

I'm old enough that I have grandchildren and young enough that I still have a teenager in the house (budding musician himself).

I tend to be pretty eclectic about my hobbies and interests although three things seem to be pretty permanent common denominators; I tend to be rather frugal, finding pleasure in seeking solutions with a high performance to cost ratio, I tend to delve deeply into the technical intricacies of whatever my obsession, and I love music.  Quantity of music is my priority rather than quality and I listen to horrible, decrepit junk at work, but I have one of those jobs where I can at least listen all day long. When I'm home however the opposite is true.

First seriously got into headphones as a more affordable (in terms of money, living space, and WAF) outlet for my long term addiction to second hand, vintage, esoteric audiophile gear (photo of part of my old speaker collection attached... bonus if you can name all of them) when a guy offered to trade me a gently used first gen pair of AKG K701 and a lightly modded Creek OBH-11 amp for a pair of Snell Type J/IV speakers I had for sale.  That was several years ago and the rest is history.  I think I favor open backed headphones and the AKG "house sound" in particular as they are all I seem to end up buying.  Currently enjoying a pair of AKG K712 with a pair of AKG K7XX on the way, and still rocking the Creek.

How do you like yer rum drinks?!

Nope.  Those are M&K SX4 sat speakers.

Holy crap. You still have netcom.com account?

Yes! Remember Netcom? They were one of the first ISPs in the Bay Area and my Netcom account dates from 1993! It's managed by Earthlink now.

Well, a certain other headphone website finally drove me over the edge to stop lurking and join up here. I just saw someone seriously state that the use of a Via USB chip was a mistake, because it was "brighter" than cmedia and xmos. No joke. Worse, the guy was talking about a sabre dac, so it's not the USB chip that's causing the problem. I knew then I had to get away to save my sanity.

Anyway, I'm smitty, I'm from NoVA, and I can never have too much gear. I listen to music for a minimum of 14 hours a day, so variety is what keeps stuff interesting.

Oh yes. I had one too. They allowed shell access and had serious security vulnerabilities that allowed people to read other peoples' e-mail. UNIX was awesome back then - lots of security holes.

I mean, I suppose the USB chip might be contributing to the problem...I don't think we'd be the type to rule that out.

Also, your wallet will suffer regardless when you have folks talking about the Rag/Yggy or other expensive gear. But at least there's less crap to get through, and you'll more likely have better spent your money the first or second time vs. one hundred times.

Too right. H-F might have made me want HD800s, but changstar made we want Rag/Yggy!

Mind you, wanting is one thing; actually spending is quite another  :-DD

Yeah but those folks are talking about their endgame rigs after many years of figuring out what they want. I don't think anyone here would dismiss something like the entry-level magni/modi schiit stack as being inadequate.

Welcome, smitty!
