Howdy.  I live in Toronto, currently make a living in the TV news biz and have been playing and recording with audio gear at the hobby level for 40 years.  I LOVE well-recorded and well-reproduced sound.  But because I don't want to be eating cat food in retirement, I have never played the fools game of chasing audio nirvana, cost-be-damned.  The 5k or so I've put into my two channel rig challenges my monetary comfort threshold and, despite my best tweaking efforts, leaves me unsatisfied.  So I'm here under the suspicion that the cost-benefit ratio in the headphone world is a little more favourable.

I've always maintained some kind of home recording facility so I've aquired a bunch of closed dynamic phones over the years for studio work.  ATH-M50's, Sony 7506's, etc.  I cared about their SQ, but they were first and foremost tools.  The exception was a pair of HD580's I bought at one point but never loved or maintained, and ended up donating to a local thrift shop.  Looking back, I probably never plugged them into anything that let them shine the entire time I had them.  Kinda regret that now.  Anyway, the latest hi-res music trend and growing headphone interest has caught my attention and I've come here via Tyll's InnerFidelity site to learn from all of you.  So far you seem like a straightforward, honest bunch.  I've been slowly wading in from the shallow end--KSC75's on a headband have left me in giddy disbelief (Who knew!? You did apparently.)--and I'll be looking to you guys for guidance on the next step up.  Actually, if you want to offer that advice now, hit me!  Time-honoured open HF/amp combo under $2k?

Looking forward to learning and hearing more.

Jeez, I just saw Tyll's latest IF post.  I too have novelty hillbilly teeth, a collection of Hawaiian shirts and play the uke.  Guess I'm in the right place.

Uke is fun. Someone got one for the kids when they were three and I started to learn how to play it.

I want get some of the members who have been around for a while to write up "good rigs" at different price points $500, $1000, $2000, etc.

I just realized that my headphone rig is a little over $2000 with the gungnir usb gen 2, wyrd, virtue one.3 (130w psu), and modded he-560. Yeesh.

Welcome to the new people!  :wheel:

Hi,

I came here from HF, having followed Purrin's various posts about DACs and amps. I enjoyed his straightforward assessment of gear. I ran across a reference that he had his own forum, and I'm glad to have found Changstar. I disliked reading ambiguous reviews provided by places like Stereophile or 6moons, so the information I've found by lurking here recently is refreshing.

I don't have the musical or engineering backgrounds to fully appreciate many of the discussions here, so I'm here to learn. Like Maxvla, I'm a fellow Oklahoman, but I'm here on the east coast for school.

Hola Pilates Pyrates,

I'm here because:

- purrin has forgotten more about DACs than I'll ever learn. yet I try.
- music lover and technology promoter.
- 100 years ago, transferred out of EE classes to focus on CS/Math.  clue me in DAC designers.
- H-Fi feels like Brady Bunch re-runs after a certain amount time.
- measurements are beneficial when performed properly.
- Shellac is the best band to ever come out of Chicago, period.
- I see Tyll's shirts at RMAF but never attempt a conversation as it likely wouldn't last more than 2 minutes: "thanks for everything you write and measure!"
- everyone needs a Straffe Hendrik Quad once a week. or night.
- revel in the audio via HE-560 and Lyr 2.

music. on.

Hi,

Indian, now working / living in Dubai, UAE. Was a speaker guy all my life until about 4 years back. That was when I stumbled across Head Fi  while researching DJ hp’s . Beyer DT 880 was my first “audiophile HP” purchase, still have them & consider them one of the most value for money HP’s.

Initially got caught up in Head Fi Frenzy & Gear lust (which caused some problems in my marriage, plus my wife also complained that when I completely switched over to HP’s  that the music in the house stopped & she missed it), went through about 25 Hp’s & 15 amps. Gear lust is slowly abating now, I have more or less settled on the HP’s & amps that I like. Have a couple of HP’s & amps that I would like to try / buy , but am in no hurry now.

Listen to my PSB Synchrony One speakers regularly on weekends & to HP’s on weekdays after work now. Fav HP’s – HD 800 & HE 6, Fav music - EDM & Rock.

Sorry for posting on a couple of threads before introducing myself, was not aware. Am here to learn & share thoughts with people who share this common passion.

Greetings. I joined looking for a different perspective after being on the other forum for over a year. I'll probably start with looking up impressions of gear that I already own and wing it from there. :wheel:
