Samsung Galaxy S5(Round) bundle earphone measurements
« on: February 10, 2015, 02:23:22 AM »

It has dual dynamic drivers, so crossover is exist inside. Tonal balance is fairly good despite of bundle earphones.

My artificial Ear (Coupler) follows IEC 60318-4 (former IEC 60711), ITU-T Recommendation P.57, ANSI S3.25 standards.

About the measuring standards

I mostly follow the IEC 60268-7 standard. I use O2 Amp for Lower the output impedance close to 0ohm. (In IEC standard, amplifier output impedance should be 120ohm.)
Also I use [1/24 octave smoothed Pink periodic noise] for frequency response analysis, and [1/6 octave stepped sine] for harmonic distortion analysis.

Diffuse Field Compensation Target follows the ISO 11904-2 standard, and Olive-Welti Target follows latest In-Room research. (Olive, Sean; Welti, Todd; McMullin, Elisabeth at AES).
But, as we know, frequency range of ISO 11904-2 standard is 20~10000Hz. So I dealt [-6dB/Oct.] at 10000Hz~20000Hz.

Yeah, it pretty much sounds how it looks. Not terrible for a accessory 'phone but still crap.

Thanks, speakerphone!

Distortion measurements are interesting here.

Yes, left and right channels distortion and frequency response are quite different. Maybe QC problem.

Egad. The distortion spike right at 800 Hz makes me wonder if something is wonky in the crossover for left ear. Marv knows way more about crossovers, so maybe he can chime in, its just odd that it is so focused in that one spot.

I'm curious about the origin of these IEMs.  As well as being bundled with Samsung Galaxy phones it's possible to buy these as a retail boxed item from Samsung online.  It's also possible to buy "bulk packaged" items which are genuine but only come with one pair of tips, size small, exactly as in the picture.  Unfortunately even more common than any of the above are crappy fakes in bulk packaging, again with just one set of small tips and apparently just like those in the review photo.  I have bought both genuine and fake versions of these IEMs.  The better fakes could pass for genuine by appearance but don't sound convincing (they are probably comparable to the kind of disappointing buds that came even with expensive with phones and tablets a few years ago).  The genuine ones sound really nice to my ear.  I much prefer them to my (budget but about 8x the price!) Shure SE215s and they definitely don't have problems with distortion or being unbalanced.

speakerphone, can you please describe the origin of the item you tested?  Did you obtain it boxed, sealed, new and bundled with a genuine Samsung Galaxy?  Buy a retail item from a Samsung retailer?  Got it for $10 on ebay?  Something else?  If so, what?  It looks to me like you may have tested the most commonly found version of these IEMs - a crappy counterfeit.

I bought Samsung Galaxy Round, known as the Samsung's first flexible display phone, and this IEM was inside there.

Thanks for the reply.  And I never knew there was a curved version of the S5.  I don't think that ever came to UK.  I use mine with a 1st generation Galaxy Note GT-N7000 and a Tab 2.

My main complaint with these headsets is that the cable fails close to the jack.  I had a couple replaced under warranty.  Another failed last week and I stripped the outer with a view to soldering a new jack but when I saw how incredibly thin the wires are I thought it will only break again....I'm on a spare pair and won't buy another when they fail (they surely will fail).
