Yes, Magnepan ships the MMGs internationally. And about the 1.7, my friend said that they improved over time so I may have to go back to his house to see if it really improved with burn in. Maybe he just got used to the sound more since he lives with them but I will listen for myself :D

Update about my friend's mg1.7...

I went back to his house and noticed that the upper midrange shoutiness wasn't making me wince anymore so it must have burned in well while playing at almost full volume on the krell 90% of the time :)

Still, I thought his MMGs were still more transparent overall so I then nailed down the placement of the 1.7 and now lo and behold... goodbye MMG. Finally the 1.7 has the transparency, better low level detail, and a very satisfying low end that doesn't feel like its about to fart at any minute like the MMG tends to do.

Still for the price, I still find the MMG to be a nice value but if you have the extra cash, go for the higher models.

Thanks for the input, donunus! I'd love to get the 1.7s, especially since then I wouldn't have to pay shipping or import fees, but I was trying to keep the system cost under that of an HD800 (my would-have-been next purchase). Although your comment on the MMG's bass is a bit unnerving: I've really grown to like the tight bass of the Q701. Maybe if I wait long enough I can psyche myself into justifying the cost of the 1.7 (fingers crossed).

The MMG bass is actually just enough for me for musical satisfaction. The 1.7 just gives me more :D

I saw these pop up locally for $450 CAD (about 370 USD). Worth checking out? I've never heard maggies before.

If you like the Stax 007, maggies might be for you.

Heard them at T.H.E. Show (or maybe it was their higher end one?). Did not liked them.

I haven't heard any of the upper end stax. The only ones I've heard were the... uh, rectangular ones? lambdas? (they all look the same to me) and another older but darker colour rectangular one with the same crappy headband which snapped on me the first time I tried it. I thought they were quick and airy, feeling sorta reminiscent of AD700's. I seem to recall some raggedness up top and rolloff in the bass, but my memory is fuzzy after that.

For same or tad bit more on price, if going used, you can probably find the more desirable mgIIIa speakers with the ribbon tweeters. They have the external crossover boxes and, considered one of the best magnepan made. I would say though give them a listen if you can and see how you like'em if you can find them. Just remember though, they're extremely fragile. Short gust of wind from wrong movement or something else can rip the ribbon tweeters. They are very tall and big too so you need pretty decent sized room (around 20x20 with proper room treatment is sufficient) and if don't have other speakers taking up space.

My friend has two pairs of these and they're pretty nice from what I remember but, other then that not much since I was in a rush. Will give them a listen another time though. He was gonna trade me one his pair for my technics sb7000a but, I passed cause I already have pair of really large 150lb altec lansing speakers taking up lot of real-estate in my room so no more big speakers for me.

If ever find pair you like, just try to audition if can.

Had MMGs (and other Magnepans) for years. Just sold my MMG pair because a friend really wanted them, and I wasn't using the bedroom system much (either I'm on headphones or on the big speakers). They do really well with the right amp. An inexpensive one that gets praise is the Outlaw RR2150. I also used Krell (no good), bel canto (no bueno either), Channel Islands (okay) but in my experience, a brighter sounding amp will not match well with MMGs. There is no way the MMGS can compete with the 1.7 or bigger Maggies, but they do have a lovely clean sound if driven well. Odyssey make inexpensive quality gear that mates well with Magnepan too.
