New Releases For 2014
« on: January 21, 2014, 06:22:44 PM »

What have you just bought? What are you looking forward to? Suggestions for other pirates?
No list limit. No post limit. Re-issues are fine. If you like it and it's out this year then post it and if you didn't like something tell us why.

It's already a good year for Americana/bluegrass/folk/country: Rosanne Cash and Mary Chapin Carpenter last week, and Blue Highway today.

I found the new Springsteen album to be his best work since "The Ghost of Tom Joad."

A new Pat Metheny Unity Band album is due out shortly (maybe today, in fact).

Later in the year, the Pacifica Quartet and Marc-Andre Hamelin are supposed to record the Ornstein Piano Quintet which was the highlight of their Fall 2013 concert tour.

Hopefully we will get more Haydn concertos from Hamelin and Les Violons du Roi; the first volume was awesome.

Burns, you give me hope on the Boss... I had heard mixed reviews but with your  headband I'll check it out.

Looking forward to Neil Finn's latest solo effort, "Dizzy Heights" (Due out February 11th). I have my preorder in.

"Divebomber" has me pretty optimistic.

Ordered, thanks!  One friend has told me several times that once you get into Finn, he's so great...look past the pop sound and the lyrics are so intense.  But- this one doesn't sound like such pop.  Hope the album carries that tone.

Rumor has it that Toll will be releasing a new album in 2014, I hope the rumor is true. Their last album was in 2006 so it' been a long time coming! I am really looking forward to it!

The advance single sounds substantially influenced by Sigur Rós's "Viðrar vel til loftárása" (trans. "Good Weather for an Airstrike) off of their 1999 album Ágætis byrjun. Even the name of the track seems to hint at the connection. If the rest of the album sounds anything like it (i.e. heavily orchestrated Post-Rock), it won't sound very much like Neil Finn's stock sound - which your friend described very accurately.

I found the new Springsteen album to be his best work since "The Ghost of Tom Joad."

High praise. I'm going to have to pick it up off of this recommendation alone.
