Vsonic GR07 Measurements
« on: December 09, 2013, 04:42:22 AM »

Vsonic GR07. I don't know if these are the mk1 or mk2. They were sent to me as part of the ASG2s. I'm way late in getting these out and I apologize for that.

My short subjective impressions are as follows

almost... (that is almost great)

I really like the presentation, the timbre, (it looks like a dynamic driver with low higher order distortions). The only issue was that the GR07 were bright up top. Again, these measurements are not accurate past 8-9k, so I don't think that 10kHz spike is totally accurate, but I did feel there was increased volume from 6k+ up.

The brightness wasn't of a spiky peaky nature, and I found that EQ did wonders.

The treble was what killed these for me, not bad, not great either.  I got something of a mechanical timbre in the upper registers as a result.  That was a mk1 I had.  Still my favorite ergonomics for a dynamic driver IEM.

This makes a lot of sense when I owned the MK2. Lots of great qualities, but slightly bright and not particularly smooth up top. I could live with the sound, TBH, but I just could not get a good seal with any of the included tips and gave up.

The gr07 mkii was my first pair of "real" iems. Pretty great for the price back when I first got them. They are a bit bright but EQing 6-8khz helps to tone down the treble a lot. The ergonomics on them is pretty good too, when worn over the ears.

Interesting. I am very sensitive to treble but I don't find the GR07 bright at all.

Are there any other iems with adjustable nozzles? Thus far, the GR07 is the only iem that has ever fit me "properly", as I have small ear canals and kinda weird angles.

GR06 and VSD1 have adjustable nozzles as well.
It's a great idea I wish more manufacturers adopted.
Hopefully VSonic haven't patented this stuff...

I really liked the mk1 and mk2 a lot but over time the peaky treble would irritate me.  They really are a fantastic value and very capable iem. I hope the next generation that Vsonic is planning are smoother in treble with very little changes anywhere else.

I believe these are actually the GR07 Bass Edition as per Unity's PMs, do you remember if the cable had a red stripe on it or not?

^^ yep, the gr07 bass edition is excellent as well. The cable does have the red strip which is kind of a weird aesthetic for me. I think that they could have just made the cable dark red to differentiate between the two version. But the candie cane strip is a bit strange looking.

The gr07 be is outstanding. It doesn't quite have the super extended treble of the regular edition, but carries a bit more texture and punch on the sub bass. Both are very good iem's IMO.

If you feel like modding, remove the back of the shell and stuff it full of damping material (in this case, mineral wool is best, as it attenuates most >5kHz) or preferably replace it with 1.5 cc of mineral wool covered by anything, e.g. lacquer.
This will fix the treble and slightly linearize the bass. Do not cover the front vent, this causes the bass to explode.

What will remain is the barely audible distortion and a hint of grain, which I think comes from the driver grille.

Pity they do not have better air, end at 17.5k. Darn, your new measurements are accurate even there.

GR07 mkII sounds identical. It just looks silver and the cable is silver-coated copper instead of pure copper, so it doesn't green anymore. Slightly higher impedance.

I found that the large VSonic single flanges (conical shape; not #1) work best. Duh. (Esp. if you mod it.)
Comply foams unfortunately rob the IEM of some air it desperately needs.
Long RE-272 biflange with an adapter (to reduce diameter to 3mm) works almost as well, boosts air while slightly attenuating 8k, but isn't as comfortable.
Adding an extra 1.5 cm of 4mm silicone tubing to simulate a longer ear canal reduces the 8k blip even more, but it breaks ergonomics.
