Micro Brewery - Boudoir Gear Shots for Blue

(1/2) > >>

Tari:
It's about time to have a place to dump some meet shots.  Hopefully this will inspire others (ahem) to do the same.

This is from our most recent micro meet in the brew city.  3 K1000's, 3 LCD-3's, an XC, Abyss, modded KS, 007's, TH900, HD800, HP-1, K501, and Paradox.  Yum.  Amp-age from Cavalli and (not pictured) ECP and headroom.

Couple thoughts:

Got to compare an unmodded LCD-3 to my modded ones and what has been dubbed the Franken3's.  The biggest jump is from stock to regular donmods, but there was definitely a difference with the new pad mod (along with whatever other voodoo dbel performed) as well.  Didn't spend enough time to get a clear preference.

The XC was not particularly memorable in that I didn't even remember if I listened to it or not afterwards, my brother had to remind me that I had.

The modded KS was pleasant with the LS tonally, but did not have the resolution of the Stax.  Assuming there are no squealing issues though (which there weren't when I was listening) it could make a good long-term stat listener as nothing stuck out as offensive.

After 3 listens in quiet micro meet environments, I just don't think the Abyss is for me.  There are some tracks that it knocks out of the park but coming back to baritone male vocals and strings it just sounds hollow to me in those registers.  This works out well for me as I wasn't looking for an excuse to spend that much.

Don had some good test tracks as always.  I only tried two of my own this time, Johnny Hartman singing "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" and then got to freak everyone out with Leon Thomas singing "The Creator Has a Master Plan" live in Berlin.

Ball's in your court Blue.

shipsupt:
Awesome!  Looks like fun.

We prefer to refer to the KS as the "Blackbeard" in it's current prototype form...  :)p4

Were you guys able to reach any conclusions about the K1000 evolution?

Tari:
I'm currently investigating the evolution longer term with the LG and LAu.

If your KS gets to be blackbeard, my Grados get to be Calico Joe.

dBel84:
That pic is pretty awesome. (roughly estimated $30K worth of cans) There was no way we were even remotely going to get a chance to listen to anything more critically. I am going to pack Blackbeard up this weekend to head over to MF for some more critical appraisal against stock.

Sad as it was, the K501 came along for the ride as the sacrificial lamb in case anything jolted loose on the LAu while on a  bumpy ride to Tari's  ( sport suspension and potholes are not forgiving )

I enjoyed the bass heavy K1K's but I do not think they are as revealing as the HD800 (anax mod) , I did give the LCD-XC another chance when I got home and set up a rig that I thought might be more synergistic ( which it was ) and I didn't find anything glaringly strident , I have however developed tinnitus which tells me that I have been listening louder than normal and probably feeds into previous thoughts.

Stapsy:
Excellent pic!  That is a serious collection of gear.  I wish I could hear those modded LCD-3's.

I like the micro meet idea, much easier to get a feel for gear when you aren't in a big noisy room.  That was the one nice thing about our Toronto meet last year.  It was on the smaller side so I just let people grab my headphones and try them on their rig's.  It is much easier to get a feel for gear when you are able to control the variable's.  You need to have a lot of experience to get a true impression when you aren't familiar with the source/amp/phones.

If I could find people with a quarter of the stuff you guy's have I would be a very happy sailor.
