And... front damping applied. No not felt. Felt didn't do squat. Even when there are like... 3 layers of it. I think felt only increases decay at low frequencies, and doesn't really dampen high frequencies.

So how did I do it? Try... tissue, or some form of thick paper.

Measurement of the result attached. I used 2 layers of tissues underneath, then a piece of felt on top (makes things more "romantic"). No longer bright or piercing. Sounds... almost right. Save for that dip at lower frequencies.

And yeah, bass was raised. I don't think it's a measurement artifact. I think what happens is... the paper Beyer used is still not completely sealed, so the driver couldn't pressurize the back chamber as much for bass. And now it can.

Funny enough, dip at 4KHz is now much less pronounced in FR as well. Removing front damping causes it to rise up again. Now I'm at a loss on how to explain it... though treble does sound a lot less rough.

Some felts work, some don't. 1-4mm wool textiles often do the trick, so does paper.

I guess I should try out different kinds of felt, then... but even layering up 3 layers of 2mm thick felt didn't really do much, so I sort of doubt that other kinds of felt would do.

2 different looking drivers, both 250 Ohm, and both fit into DT770.

Subjectively, one is brighter than the other. It's the one with the metallic looking "dome" thing under the paper layer.

Measurements and stuffs incoming... (will probably have to wait until this weekend when I have more time to solder)

Are those both from 770's?

Any why haven't you slapped some tesla drivers in there yet?  :P

I do have a Tesla headphone here... T5P. :P

Will get to work on it once I'm done with DT770.

And this means I'll have another working pair of DT770 in the Pro body. Would be cool for comparisons and stuffs. :)

I have a dt770 pro. For front damping, I used about 13 sheets of toilet papet, uncut. I laid them two at a time (crosswise to another, so it looked star-shaped instead of a rectangle/square shape). I added a little polyfill under the ear pads. Then I ripped the layers one at a time, so by the time I got the last layer, the front damping tapered down. So the damping is cone shaped, basically. I won't be rigorous, but the macro and microdynamics improved. Say, punch, pianofortes, crescendos, sound envelope. Right now it's leaning toward a warmish sound, but all the instruments sound fairly correct. I also have polyfill in the cavity,  the bass cage removed, and the previous acoustic tape removed, so that could partly account for the warm sound.

Thanks for the paper in front of the driver damping idea, Bill.

I agree and prefer the bass extension on the DT-880 250 ohm versus the DT-770.  I think the semi-open DT-880 helps tame the harsher sound of the stock 770.  IMHO.
