a resonance can show itself as a peak or as a dip.

The ridge is extremely narrow but with some music it 'might' become audible.
Never 'heard' it was there (the long decay) until I measured it (several times, as I thought it was an error)
It's a good 20dB below the rest of the spectrum anyway but the decay time is very long.

The HD650 is not my best headphone but still up there...

When I was talking about ringing, I am not quite sure if it was csd ringing or just plainly the sound sig making the lower highs sound brighter due to less veiling. Either way, it didn't feel quite natural. It was as if I am listening to speakers in a room with good acoustics vs that of a very live room. This was with the hd600 with silver material though and not the hd650. I have heard an older black material 650 with the dip in the upper mids and I would understand the defoaming as a good tradeoff in sound. With the hd600, the bass levels also dropped a little and it is not really a very good thing for those cans.

Anyway, I will borrow a black felt 650 and try this myself and see which config I will like best.

Purrin, my theory is that foam on the back of the grill decreased air flow and created more pressure in the cup, that why diaphragm is now more ,,easy'' to control, and bass is more tight. also it absorbs unwanted treble and mid range reflected waves from the back and compensates openness on front, since HD650 has no nasty peaks on treble region I believe It is OK to open front side of the driver and dampen it from back. I would not do the same for HD800 because it has more tilted 6-10 kHz which could cause sibilance, glare or shrillness.

The results is stunning, lets take vocals, strings, bass, brass instruments, especially male and female voices exhibit great naturalness. I felt that original was little bit muddy, murky sounding, sometimes vocal was shy,  I have never heard any headphone sounded like this in my experience.

To compare: original HD650 was mediocre 2.1 speaker system bought for 150$ from next big electronics store now it is very good 2.0 studio monitors.

I wish I could send my pair for measurements but sadly I am not in USA now.

Kind of want to get an HD650 and do the mod now.

Thanks Lumos and Solderdude!

This takes the risk out of picking up some HD650.  The newer ones do seem better in the clarity department. But if you get an older pair of HD650, this offers hope.

Today, I'm listening to the HD600>TTVJ Portable Millet Hybrid and it is JUST GREAT.  Only thing this rig lacks is low bass, but it does everything nicely and smoothly.  Would like to hear a modded HD650 on the TTVJ to see how the tonality/clarity compares.

How's it with foam in the front and back?  I'm not sure I want to remove the foam on mine.  I never really like headphone sounds without the front foam.  I'm also too lazy to do this mod, as I enjoy the HD650 the way it is and would need to make/buy new foam.  I have some older HD650s (white), I'm not sure what the latest looks like, haven't kept up.

Side note, I find it funny that the rage a couple of years ago was about more power and how HD650s need so much more power and need to be balanced to remove veil.  Now that hype seems to all have disappeared.

The "bright = best" fad is fading, now people are digging the warm and the dark. HD650 was ahead of its time.

Trying this mod out. Initial impression is that soundstage seems to have shrank a touch. This could be due to the more prominent bass and forward mid range. Individual elements are less distinct, but there seems to be improvement in overall dynamics. There's a hint of congestion, though that's offset by a more open treble presentation. On some tracks vocals are highlighted and it's positively striking.

This is with a "silver" screen HD650. From a Mjolnir using a balanced Q cable (fwiw).

edit: OK! Listening to the latest Hardwell On Air podcast. Bass is slammin. I like.  :)p1

Trying this mod out.

What did you use for the front of the drivers?

Got a hold of some hd650s (Silver) and just got to try the mod. I don't like what the foam behind the drivers do. It constricts the sound. Feels a little more canned and less free sounding. The defoaming without putting the foam at the back does sound a little better than the stock cans though unlike the hd600 where I prefer everything in stock form.

OT: I also got a hold of some hd595s and I like them better overall vs the 650 even though they are a little too bright and less controlled. Acoustic guitars sound fabulous on the 595 while a little dead on the 650. I think I may just get the 598 based on the difference of the 598 and 595 graphs having less 10khz energy on the 598.
