  • CEE TEE: Oh- don't start if you haven't yet!  I don't know where I am going to put the vinyl and will have to move things around to listen to my TT again...
    May 18, 2013, 11:32:00 PM
  • Stapsy: aha stop tempting me Cee Tee, my girlfriend is going to kill me if I start with vinyl

    May 18, 2013, 10:02:46 PM
  • Stapsy: It easily sounds as good as the arena concert that I went to a couple of weeks ago with the added bonus that I can control the volume so it doesn't blow out my eardrums

  • Analixus: 30 secs to Mars is kicking ass!

  • AstralStorm: (because the send channel is, I've measured it)
    May 17, 2013, 11:15:48 PM
  • AstralStorm: probably the optical interface chip is not that great at jitter
    May 17, 2013, 11:15:33 PM
  • AstralStorm: that's what I get for using "discount" amp such as Leckerton UHA
    May 17, 2013, 11:15:08 PM
  • AstralStorm: fun thing, in my setup, coax SPDIF is indeed better than optical

  • CEE TEE: Nice purrin...we needed to get HD600 up on the board!
    May 17, 2013, 03:06:36 PM
  • Mr.Sneis: All we need is headroom to make a Stat amp and use 5-pin XLR termination!
    May 17, 2013, 03:02:41 PM
  • purrin: HD600 and Sony XBA (the currawong model) measurements coming in a bit. Maybe a few days.
    May 17, 2013, 02:56:09 PM
  • MuppetFace: I don't particularly care what connectors everyone uses, so long as everyone can agree on the same damn standard.
    May 17, 2013, 02:42:51 PM
  • shipsupt: I used to do lighting for my high school drama club.   :-[
    May 17, 2013, 02:21:42 PM
  • shipsupt: Mostly used for lighting, but some audio stuff.
    May 17, 2013, 02:21:05 PM
  • shipsupt: There are 5 pin XLR's.
    May 17, 2013, 02:20:05 PM
  • n3rdling: probably.  the only xlrs i know are 3 and 4 pin :p
    May 17, 2013, 02:16:18 PM
  • MuppetFace: Don't the Jades use a 5 pin XLR?
    May 17, 2013, 02:04:38 PM
  • n3rdling: need 5 pins minimum for stats unless you want to run single ended...are you talking about mini xlrs at the cups ala lcd2 or some 5 pin xlr i dont know about
    May 17, 2013, 01:29:42 PM
  • anetode: so disregarding the bias, it'll work unless you play the stats ultra loud - or at least that's what i'm claiming while talking out of my ass
    May 17, 2013, 06:56:36 AM
  • anetode: it'll work, for example [link] is "Voltage, proof - 1.5kV", but the working ac rating is only 250v
    May 17, 2013, 06:54:31 AM
  • firev1: someone test it out. :X
    May 17, 2013, 06:51:46 AM
  • shipsupt: Is an XLR rated for the voltage you need for stax?
    May 17, 2013, 06:49:01 AM
  • RudeWolf: Are the voltage ratings sufficient?
    May 17, 2013, 06:48:01 AM
  • anetode: now if you could only convince stat makers to switch to xlr and put the zombified stax plug to rest
    May 17, 2013, 06:41:07 AM
  • AstralStorm: yup, they're great, it's also trivial to convert to 5-pin xlr
    May 16, 2013, 11:50:06 PM
  • RudeWolf: I wish everyone would just use mini-xlr. Love those connectors.
    May 16, 2013, 11:46:12 PM
  • AstralStorm: they thoughtfully included spare SMC connectors with them
    May 16, 2013, 11:43:44 PM
  • AstralStorm: eh, I'll have to resolder Leckerton's opamp mod anyway, I'll make a new cable for HE500 then too
    May 16, 2013, 11:43:08 PM
  • AstralStorm: the cables are too long for my height to do that
    May 16, 2013, 11:41:24 PM
  • AstralStorm: it's not an RF cable and in fact it's better if it attenuates that
    May 16, 2013, 11:40:47 PM
  • RudeWolf: For IEM's and portable phones in general I prefer using a 3.5->3.5 extender so that the original jack doesn't take the punishment of pocket environment.
    May 16, 2013, 11:40:45 PM
  • AstralStorm: as to the geometry, it shouldn't matter too much unless you add heavy shielding and/or go balanced
    May 16, 2013, 11:38:56 PM
  • AstralStorm: RE400 one is too vulnerable near the jack; RE272/RE272/RE0/RE-ZERO hardened (and often broke), became microphonic; HE500/600 are stiff, microphonic and the SMC connectors are long enough to bite shoulders at times
    May 16, 2013, 11:37:55 PM
  • AstralStorm: well, Hifiman still seems to suffer for cables as well - they're shit in some regard
    May 16, 2013, 11:36:01 PM
  • RudeWolf: My TF10 has the worst cable. The only headphone I've thought of recabling.
    May 16, 2013, 11:32:59 PM
  • AstralStorm: the cable itself is another matter: 1) large jack - I want mini for now 2) microphonic 3) stiff 4) tangly
    May 16, 2013, 11:31:19 PM
  • RudeWolf: I'm not much of believer in cable materials. I'd rather experiment with geometry.
    May 16, 2013, 11:31:01 PM
  • AstralStorm: eh, the connectors are bit long in the stock cable, but they are quite reliable
    May 16, 2013, 11:30:13 PM
  • AstralStorm: seriously, $100 for a cable, even made of silver, is way too much
    May 16, 2013, 11:29:37 PM
  • RudeWolf: These connectors have been for long putting me off on buying the HE500.
    May 16, 2013, 11:29:28 PM
  • AstralStorm: and I've grown to hate soldering cables
    May 16, 2013, 11:26:15 PM
  • AstralStorm: darn, nobody makes affordable *and* non-micrphonic/stiff cables with these
    May 16, 2013, 11:26:06 PM
  • AstralStorm: oh, found it, it's SMC
    May 16, 2013, 11:25:14 PM
  • AstralStorm: an unrelated question: what's the connector on Hifiman headphones called? the one that looks like a miniBNC
    May 16, 2013, 11:22:27 PM
  • AstralStorm: (in fact, less difference with DACs)
    May 16, 2013, 11:21:51 PM
  • AstralStorm: same with DACs
    May 16, 2013, 11:20:08 PM
  • AstralStorm: of course, unless said amp is completely broken in some regard
    May 16, 2013, 11:19:47 PM
  • AstralStorm: still, the differences are real small, even a trained listener can miss them, and untrained won't even note them
    May 16, 2013, 11:19:22 PM
  • AstralStorm: no they don't, but the difference is more in topology than in components (unless we're talking valves)
    May 16, 2013, 11:18:45 PM
  • RudeWolf: All amps sound the same hurr durr.
    May 16, 2013, 10:23:48 PM
  • AstralStorm: the order is: upgrade headphones/IEMs >>>>>> upgrade amplifier >> upgrade DAC > optionals: power conditioning, balanced end-to-end wiring if possible
    May 16, 2013, 10:23:23 PM
  • AstralStorm: It'd be fine if it were ODAC with some high end amp, but this is just a waste
    May 16, 2013, 10:18:46 PM
  • AstralStorm: lol
    May 16, 2013, 10:18:24 PM
  • burnspbesq: Oh. My. Goodness.  [link]

  • shipsupt: That was a good price!
    May 16, 2013, 01:56:07 PM
  • burnspbesq: At least jriver is up front about the mac port being a work in progress.  Front page of the website says " It probably won't be dependable for daily use for the first 3 months."
    May 16, 2013, 01:36:03 PM
  • Mr.Sneis: Damnm those esp950's didnt last
    May 16, 2013, 01:24:20 PM
  • shipsupt: Man, is jRiver ever going to get the bugs worked out on the Mac?  Because I really like the sound of it...but it's buggy as hell.
    May 16, 2013, 01:02:14 PM
  • ihasmario: Thats just for the piano btw, the rest of it (epiano) is just a load of reverb and mod
    May 16, 2013, 11:42:10 AM
  • ihasmario: Info about the recording; recorded partially binaurally with cups over the microphones (contacting resonant surface - similar in operation to a plate reverb). The recording itself lacks bass, vocals etc, but I figured I'd run the effect past people like usual.
    May 16, 2013, 11:38:36 AM
  • ihasmario: Another test. This time testing the production for headphones vs speakers. [link] Better on headphones, speakers or terrible on both? :)
    May 16, 2013, 11:35:59 AM

    May 16, 2013, 04:42:15 AM
  • AstralStorm: also where can I get the impression silicone for cheaps?
    May 15, 2013, 11:21:46 PM
  • AstralStorm: do you folks know what kind of loose foam Hifiman uses for their filters?
    May 15, 2013, 11:17:50 PM
  • AstralStorm: that's what I get for not having real reflow and soldering with crummy tools
    May 15, 2013, 09:45:00 PM
  • AstralStorm: darn, I must have one of the NC pins in the leckerton's mod come loose - the left channel grabs stupid amount of noise
    May 15, 2013, 09:44:19 PM
  • burnspbesq: I was really tempted by the Concero HP until I started pricing standalone ADCs (to replace the ADC capabilities in the Hilo).  Eek!
    May 15, 2013, 04:01:07 PM
  • burnspbesq: The original Concero (I have the first one that was sold to a paying customer, FWIW) uses a Sabre 9023 which is incapable to dealing with DSD.  In order to make the Concero HD DSD-capable, they had to switch to the 9016 (the same chip used in the headphone circuit of the Invicta).
    May 15, 2013, 03:53:28 PM
  • planx: i have no idea haha. mark just said there's a new software going to be relased and he mentioned there's going to be a concero HD coming out, but didn't exactly tie the two together so im not exactly sure what's what
    May 15, 2013, 02:54:38 PM
  • Mr.Sneis: but  what do I know lol - wasn't in the market for it either way :()
    May 15, 2013, 02:49:32 PM
  • Mr.Sneis: the hd would use a different chip as a result
    May 15, 2013, 02:49:12 PM
  • Mr.Sneis: I was under the impression that ESS chip in the concero would not allow dsd because it simply couldnt
    May 15, 2013, 02:48:59 PM
  • Mr.Sneis: interesting
    May 15, 2013, 02:48:35 PM
  • planx: he even offered if i wanted the software update on my unit with the DSD and DXD playback, but again, i am not sure if the concero HD is only a software update or both a software and hardware update
    May 15, 2013, 02:46:17 PM
  • planx: i am not sure if there are any hardware changes, but from a brief exchange of emails, it seems like there's a software update to this point in time
    May 15, 2013, 02:43:49 PM
  • planx: i heard. i'm not too sure, but Mark said that there is a new software that acceps DSD and DXD playback
    May 15, 2013, 02:43:12 PM
  • Mr.Sneis: You have heard they are releasing a new "HD" version right?
    May 15, 2013, 02:34:43 PM
  • planx: lawl
    May 15, 2013, 02:33:08 PM
  • planx: either the guy is very keen on selling one for that price or the concero holds its value VERY well
    May 15, 2013, 02:33:03 PM
  • Mr.Sneis: that's awesome.  The used one was like $25 less than retail haha
    May 15, 2013, 02:31:39 PM
  • planx: $100 off for a local item from the company itself, i don't think you can go very wrong with that indeed
    May 15, 2013, 02:29:11 PM
  • planx: i got a discount for a "b-stock" unit that has a slight ding on the back that i apparently cannot see
    May 15, 2013, 02:28:34 PM
  • Mr.Sneis: I think a used one popped up earlier this week :(  His price was terrible though
    May 15, 2013, 02:25:57 PM
  • planx: local and free shipping, plus a 30 day money back so took the plunge
    May 15, 2013, 02:24:10 PM
  • planx: just ordered a Concero DAC
    May 15, 2013, 02:23:29 PM

    May 14, 2013, 04:59:45 PM

    May 14, 2013, 03:39:24 AM
  • RudeWolf: Damn! That's really good! If I'll be able to build a pair of high efficiency speakers then I might be in market for something similar.

    May 14, 2013, 02:37:16 AM
  • RudeWolf: I mean rays. Gamma waves would require downsampling.
    May 14, 2013, 12:58:51 AM
  • RudeWolf: To gamma waves.
    May 14, 2013, 12:38:20 AM
  • RudeWolf: Oversampling.

    May 14, 2013, 12:06:36 AM

    May 13, 2013, 11:39:50 PM
  • Sforza: Cats can hear up to 64k. I think even he's being sarcastic though.
    May 13, 2013, 08:54:19 PM
  • PhoenixClaw: MOTD material?  :)p1
    May 13, 2013, 05:37:26 PM
  • gelocks: New signature... "My hearing improves dramatically when I start looking at FR graphs — when I look at these graphs, I can hear up to 40K (50K on a good day). When I stop looking at those graphs, I can only hear up to 10K." --> music_4321  >:D
    May 13, 2013, 03:14:47 PM

  • firev1: Was considering the Wire but I'm somewhat scared of SMD...
    May 12, 2013, 10:07:31 PM
  • CEE TEE: GG:  I like the flexibility of the Peak, but purrin and blessingx own or have owned the Peak and think the Arete is really good.  Want to roll- Peak.  No fuss- Arete!
    May 12, 2013, 10:50:31 AM
  • LFF: Yes...
    May 12, 2013, 10:42:02 AM
  • kevin gilmore: 4 versions of the wire. all are far more powerful and better than o2.
    May 12, 2013, 09:32:09 AM
  • RudeWolf: Has anyone heard the Wire amp? Just like the O2 it looks to simple to sound good.
    May 12, 2013, 06:38:24 AM
  • ihasmario: [link] Currently looking at trying this or something like it in addition to the schneider disc
    May 12, 2013, 03:54:54 AM
  • Questhate: Damn BP, I just sold my Magnums. What parts do you need? Drivers can be bought from Rhydon directly, although he's on V5 now.
    May 12, 2013, 02:07:33 AM
  • Girls Generation: wonder which is a better match with hd800. arete or peak. Seemingly Arete due to warmth. :o
    May 12, 2013, 12:57:48 AM
  • twizzleraddict: ihas: sax with no foam has great presence in its space. with foam, just sounds like another instrument mixed in an artificial plane.
    May 11, 2013, 10:00:47 PM

  • BlackenedPlague: Where do i go to get parts for a Magnum V4 buid?
    May 11, 2013, 08:30:48 PM
  • ihasmario: I'll do another recording in the same room and get some feedback on mic spacing on the schneider disc.
    May 11, 2013, 04:13:51 PM
  • ihasmario: Thanks UB :) The untreated recording is pretty harsh (new reed and it also clips a few times because I was trying to catch any reverb), the reverb really rounds it off. Obviously it's easier to work with a clean sound though.
    May 11, 2013, 03:45:27 PM
  • ultrabike: That is... I like what the room does to the sax...
    May 11, 2013, 02:38:17 PM
  • ultrabike: From quick listening I do feel there is some binaural stuff going on there. The sax untreated has some reverb going on vs treated... but like the untreated better :)

  • ihasmario: PM'd.
    May 11, 2013, 10:55:36 AM
  • shipsupt: possibly a little on the piano file too
    May 11, 2013, 10:38:58 AM
  • shipsupt: Yeah, I think there is some clipping going on there.
    May 11, 2013, 10:37:59 AM
  • shipsupt: Did you mike the sax at the same distance, or is it further away in the untreated room?
    May 11, 2013, 10:33:29 AM
  • shipsupt: I get some binaural from the keyboard, esp. when it first starts.  Most of the sound feels behind me, and the cricket seems to be to my left.
    May 11, 2013, 10:31:54 AM
  • shipsupt: listening now ihas
    May 11, 2013, 10:30:35 AM
  • ihasmario: Er, some poor pasting on my part. Link 1: [link] Link 2: [link] Link 3: [link]
    May 11, 2013, 10:13:13 AM
  • ihasmario: And the last clip: some piano recorded. [link] Any binaural effects? Any comments? Thanks
    May 11, 2013, 10:11:28 AM
  • ihasmario: And another: A saxophone recorded in proximity firstly in a treated room, followed by an untreated room. Any binaural effect noted? Any other notes (eg. if you think the reed is new, old, broken; if you feel there is clipping in either of the recordings)?
    May 11, 2013, 10:11:07 AM
  • ihasmario: Another listening help for me and recording. [link] Can you sense any binaural effect on this (rather noisy) recording? Is it mostly prevalent with the keyboard sounds, or the background noise? Which direction does the cricket appear to be coming from?
    May 11, 2013, 10:09:41 AM
  • shipsupt: It's fun to occasionaly score some $.99 vinyl!

    May 11, 2013, 08:21:39 AM
  • Tyll Hertsens: WTF! Are you guys stalking me? I don't need my work habits spread all over the web, dahmik!
    May 11, 2013, 07:59:02 AM
  • Analixus: Yes, and old men in Lederhosen passed out in the urinals.
    May 11, 2013, 07:18:35 AM
  • kevin gilmore: its not about the bier, its about the experience of the place and very drunk people getting up on the tables and falling down
    May 11, 2013, 06:06:44 AM
  • RudeWolf: Still, the worst bike goes faster than a rocking horse.
    May 11, 2013, 01:48:28 AM

    May 11, 2013, 01:37:49 AM

  • firev1: ewwwww yammies
    May 11, 2013, 12:08:16 AM
  • Tyll Hertsens: Fairly new. That's one problem with Hawaiian shirts, they go to shit within 10-15 wash cycles.  Costco is a great source for them, BTW.
    May 10, 2013, 10:46:25 PM
  • Analixus: Hey Tyll, is that a new shirt?
    May 10, 2013, 10:35:44 PM
  • Analixus: Btw, Hoffbrauhaus bier tastes like scheisse.
    May 10, 2013, 10:34:58 PM
  • Analixus: Well, tell Nikon to bring their good photos to CES next year because they got pwn'd by Canon's gallery this year.
    May 10, 2013, 10:33:03 PM
  • Tyll Hertsens: JUst luck of the draw, started with Canon 'cuz a buddy was selling one back when it was film. Slowly kept upgrading and not wanting to throw family lenses and accessories out, just stuck with the brand. I know how the shit works, but these days I just leave it in "P", shoot raw, and adjust in Pshop. I know...I've just lost all respect. I don't give a shit. The only fanboi war I'll engage in is with motorbikes---YAMAHA RULZ, HONDA DROOLZ!
    May 10, 2013, 09:19:23 PM
  • LFF: Oh...and I use a Leica rebranded by Panasonic...err...or is it the other way around? :-Z
    May 10, 2013, 05:08:25 PM
  • LFF: Here is how I see it...because Nikon is better, idiots with a boatload of money will buy the the best...in this case "Nikon". The poor "pros" can't afford the best so they settle with equipment that works well. Thus, a pro will take nice pics on a Canon while the rich morons will take craptastic pics on a Nikon. A good photographer will take awesome pics on a polaroid instant camera...it just takes the right hands and vision.
    May 10, 2013, 05:07:11 PM
  • kevin gilmore: i expected pictures from tyll at hoffbrauhaus standing on the table

  • twizzleraddict: Canons suck in the hands of idiots. Nikons equally suck in the hands of idiots.
    May 10, 2013, 02:14:22 PM
  • Analixus: FYI, I use my Nokia so I have no dog in this race.  The small Fujis are quite nice and have been ogling the EXRs before I decided to just stick to my phone for now.
    May 10, 2013, 02:04:48 PM
  • Analixus: So did anyone complain that the season finale of House last year was filmed entirely on a 5D mk2?
    May 10, 2013, 02:03:14 PM
  • Analixus: Pft, the Canon shots I see regularly blow away Nikon in the right hands.  Do that many people suck at using Nikons?
    May 10, 2013, 01:39:27 PM
  • BlackenedPlague: first head-fi meet tomorrow, am excite!

    May 10, 2013, 08:15:35 AM
  • Analixus: I've almost pulled the trigger on a RAT mouse a few times.  Ultimately, build quality issues and cheap feel kept me away.  I love the design though.
    May 10, 2013, 08:10:28 AM
  • RudeWolf: But really, the mouse is quite customizable. So I should be able to tailor it to my hands.
    May 10, 2013, 06:14:53 AM
  • RudeWolf: My hands are augmented.
    May 10, 2013, 06:10:47 AM
  • hiyu64: but why would you want a transformer for your mouse?  It looks super unconfortable
    May 10, 2013, 05:41:06 AM
  • RudeWolf: Just pulled the trigger on the RAT 7. The reviews look promising.
    May 10, 2013, 12:25:12 AM
  • firev1: My friend is a extremely heavy mouse user as he does a lot of web/graphics design work and he swears to using Steel Series mice. All his Razers landed up in the dumpster within months.
    May 10, 2013, 12:12:27 AM
  • RudeWolf: Btw, I claw the mouse and prefer wider grip. Razer mice seem a tad thin.
    May 10, 2013, 12:05:38 AM
  • DJ DJ: I use a Razer Deathadder, lasted me the past two years with no trouble.
    May 10, 2013, 12:00:41 AM
  • DJ DJ: they seem alright, if overpriced
    May 10, 2013, 12:00:07 AM
  • RudeWolf: Can anyone give me an opinion on them R.A.T. mice? I'm about to pull the trigger on one.
    May 09, 2013, 11:40:41 PM
  • Mr.Sneis: that works too but if you get it wet you just air dry overnight.  i never have good blow dryer

  • wilzc: Of course :)
    May 09, 2013, 08:33:38 PM

    May 09, 2013, 06:44:03 PM

    May 09, 2013, 12:45:21 PM
  • Mr.Sneis: The only sane ones are the oblivious consumers who don't get into this crazy hobby
    May 09, 2013, 12:43:11 PM
  • catscratch: As far as who is still sane: I think Westone's pretty sane, but that is totally not the fanboy in me talking. No Sir, I'm as unbiased and impartial as the finest in orange-furred news broadcasting services. Also, Etymotic have stuck to their guns, for better or worse.
    May 09, 2013, 12:21:58 PM
  • Mr.Sneis: I don't see it getting better sadly
    May 09, 2013, 12:16:16 PM
  • catscratch: Ugh, I think it's getting harder to deny that the headphone market is getting more like the speaker market every day. $1400 for a universal IEM? The sad thing is, I think they'll probably sell plenty of those, because there are people that want what they think is a top-flight IEM without the bother of going to an audiologist, which probably creeps a lot of people out - and takes effort too.
    May 09, 2013, 12:10:23 PM

  • shipsupt: I have a custom bank set pretty much like KROCK and occasionally I like the look, but not as a standard.  I think it really helped during the D80-ish era... but the new stuff isn't as flat as those Nikons were.
    May 09, 2013, 07:26:56 AM

    May 09, 2013, 01:24:14 AM
  • RudeWolf: Still the 9 Ohm impedance is the star of the show. I can't wait to hear the sound impressions going all over the damn place.

    May 09, 2013, 12:41:22 AM
  • planx: but to be downright honest, i actually liked the midrange of the SE535. if they MANAGED to fix the shitty bass and treble with the SE535, MAYBE it will be respected more, but i doubt the performance can justify the pricetag...

    May 09, 2013, 12:15:20 AM
  • phillip88: maybe you're referring to Sony? Or perhaps whoever is manufacturing iBuds or Earpods?
    May 09, 2013, 12:15:01 AM
  • planx: the question was "Is there any "major" IEM manufacturer that's still sane?"  :)p7
    May 09, 2013, 12:12:52 AM
  • phillip88: I kinda laughed when someone commented on the 3 available tunings: "Like Shure couldn't decide what sounded great."
    May 09, 2013, 12:11:52 AM
  • phillip88: i'll reserve my criticism first until I hear it. Waiting for others not named xxx for reviews. I guess after the fiasco by AKG, Senn n the rest (esp AKG), it seems like it's already a norm to sell something at $1k and feel good about it.
    May 09, 2013, 12:10:24 AM
  • PhoenixClaw: Right; sane, but not perfect.
    May 09, 2013, 12:10:16 AM

    May 08, 2013, 10:40:54 PM
  • phillip88: i was more concerned of the claim "best in the herd". Better than K3003, TG334, FIBASS, and all those uber expensive universals?
    May 08, 2013, 10:34:17 PM
  • planx: first they overprice the srh1840, now their IEM
    May 08, 2013, 10:29:07 PM

    May 08, 2013, 10:28:55 PM
  • wilzc: 1k? Fuck you Shure
    May 08, 2013, 10:03:15 PM
  • PhoenixClaw: They even laser etched their logo and number on each driver (01,02,..)
    May 08, 2013, 09:43:25 PM
  • phillip88: and that $1k i quoted was based on the pre-order price. my bad.
    May 08, 2013, 09:35:53 PM
  • phillip88: i don't know who's wanting to catch up...
    May 08, 2013, 09:35:39 PM
  • Tyll Hertsens: Well....that looks interesting.  But at that price, why not go for ES5 or JH13? Hmm.
    May 08, 2013, 09:35:37 PM

    May 08, 2013, 09:19:14 PM

    May 08, 2013, 08:27:07 PM
  • Kunlun: Attention: When I buy an earphone and I don't like it, I don't get angry at the company. I take personal responsibility. That's because I'm awesome.

  • mkubota1: I'm not sure if Razor Dog is still doing the $100 off HD600/650.  It's on an exclusion list along with some other Senns.  I bought them 6 months ago and he said he gave me the discount by mistake and he would no longer do it.  I think you can always put it in your cart and see what happens.

But that doesn't mean we should just nurture the bestial tendencies in us. Pessimistic idealism is why I ultimately lose out to the cannibals of the world.

    May 03, 2013, 03:07:41 PM
  • Tari: There was an article in WIRED about how the guy brought in to "fix" BB was instituting various changes... one of his points of emphasis was price matching. Maybe they have a program that combs Amazon prices and keeps in line with them.
    May 03, 2013, 03:06:34 PM

    May 03, 2013, 11:45:20 AM

    May 03, 2013, 11:35:53 AM
  • Tyll Hertsens: It may be in part due to the fact that they can't actually be worn.  Have no idea if they fit on the ears of the head properly. I think Ultrasone may be the worst manufacturer out there; worse than Beats, if you ask me. But maybe I'm being too hard on them....nah.
    May 03, 2013, 11:35:01 AM
  • ultrabike: Shit! I just checked the Zino characterization charts at HeadRoom. That crap *screams* high mids and low highs. Distortion is absolutely horrible. What a POS!

  • Tari: Zino Egregio.
    May 03, 2013, 11:25:59 AM
  • AstralStorm: (except it costed $350)
    May 03, 2013, 11:23:40 AM
  • AstralStorm: of that I have no doubt, but the new HFi might be better than the pro 650 or whatever that was called and was *almost* passable for $100 ;p
    May 03, 2013, 11:23:28 AM
  • Tyll Hertsens: The Zino was a piece of shit. The horrid sound was only exceeded by its ridiculous ergonomics.

    May 03, 2013, 11:08:44 AM
  • AstralStorm: midrange is perfectly balanced - the remaining imbalance is limited to the 6-8k range, +/- 1.5 dB by ear, not critical
    May 03, 2013, 11:03:16 AM
  • AstralStorm: the most fun thing about the mod is that it fixed some of the channel imbalance. I bet that was due to chinese cable mounting practices with gluing cable to the shell with silicone - uneven amounts of it
    May 03, 2013, 11:01:55 AM
  • ultrabike: Well said Tyll!
    May 03, 2013, 10:58:31 AM
  • AstralStorm: then add in a DF eq circuit and voila, mod finished, heh
    May 03, 2013, 10:51:09 AM
  • AstralStorm: The next step in modding is adding a very nice supertweeter and replacing the shell, since it's irrelevant, as the driver is nearly linear in free field (or very highly dampened) conditions.
    May 03, 2013, 10:49:00 AM
  • AstralStorm: Truly, the drivers are a masterpiece - now does anyone know where I can get a supertweeter driver? (>16 kHz)
    May 03, 2013, 10:45:53 AM
  • AstralStorm: (I mean equalized of course, uneq'd the bass rolls smoothly)
    May 03, 2013, 10:45:16 AM
  • AstralStorm: heh, with the superdamping&seal (TM) mod the RE-400 go down to 16 Hz @ -3 dB
    May 03, 2013, 10:44:56 AM
  • Tari: If possible.  I don't know Asians as well as I do but I assume its not as prevalent across all Asians as much as certain ones.  Maybe that's naive on my part though.

    May 03, 2013, 10:35:37 AM
  • sachu: didn't say they don't anax.. said everybody does.. asians just do it more regularly
    May 03, 2013, 10:35:00 AM
  • Tari: Part of it is cultural, your average bazaar over there is all about haggling.  Another element is a lot of 1st generation immigrants get ripped off a few times by Americans when they first get over and then have the suspicion that everyone is trying to rip them off, so they'll never accept an initial price given them.
    May 03, 2013, 10:34:31 AM
  • AstralStorm: mmmh, newly tuned RE-400 are indeed flat. As in non-DF super dampened, more than Paradox actually, with better bass, but slightly lacking highest end extension. Superb harmonic performance remains. Use with Comply T400 small and deep insertion. FR here: [link] . Should I describe the mod in the thread?

    May 03, 2013, 10:33:38 AM
  • Tari: Asians seems like a pretty large swath of the world.  I bet it could be localized more than that.  In my own experience, people from the middle east are the worst.  If I know I'm dealing with such a person I'll quote them double what I normally would because they NEED to feel that they "won" haggling me down to a price I "didnt' want to sell at" even though its the same as I would initially quote anyone else.

  • firev1: Oh I see. Lately at a meet, heard of a guy who kept requesting for customs and sold it after reviews to others for reshelling.
    May 03, 2013, 10:04:03 AM
  • Tari: Okay.  He actually mentions in one of his posts doing reviews for an external site and reviewing a gift.  So I guess he is a "reviewer", though the only thing that is prominent is his ignorance.
    May 03, 2013, 10:00:36 AM
  • xzobinx: He did said he reviewed something and posted it somewhere
    May 03, 2013, 10:00:18 AM
  • firev1: Oh sorry, I was referring to Tyll(prominent reviewer) if there is any misunderstanding.
    May 03, 2013, 09:54:55 AM
  • Tari: Wait, that guy is a reviewer?   The guy who insinuates other reviewers' conspiratorial financial interests and sponsorship for favorable reviews?  What a clown.
    May 03, 2013, 09:52:35 AM
  • Stapsy: Well thought out and articulate response. I am sick of hearing people cry foul when they see a positive review. "Oh they must get backhanded deals from the manufacturer". Its all such bullshit.  Something has to get a positive review doesnt it?
    May 03, 2013, 09:52:00 AM
  • firev1: that guy is an a-hole, the trouble of prominent reviewers. Then again this hobby is spoilt by those that do reviews for profit.

  • sachu: aye.. Tyll.. feel you on that man. *flashback of crap slung at me at HC*
    May 03, 2013, 09:45:12 AM
  • shipsupt: I think it's great that Tyll and IF allow feedback on the site.  There are plenty of blogs out there that you can go to and read that don't offer that type of open communication.  The only downside is the occasional jack-hole.
    May 03, 2013, 09:39:58 AM
  • Tyll Hertsens: Fuck. Somethings I can't just let slide, it's simply too personally important. I usually have a pretty thick skin, but lies and slander need be addressed at time if only to let the truth be known out ther. My response [link]

  • Tari: People have a disconnect when they don't realize they're dealing with a cottage industry that doesn't have much in the way of margins or much pull with suppliers.
    May 03, 2013, 09:37:49 AM
  • Tari: People are used to dealing with Amazon these days.  If a product is late shipping or something is up with an amazon order, you routinely give the customer discounts for the delay.  That turns potential negative feedback into positive.
    May 03, 2013, 09:36:59 AM
  • Tari: Tyll, Ultrazino was a super Ultrasone fanboy back in the day.  Your take on some of their products causes these guys to carry a grudge and start all sorts of conspiracy theories as to who you're in bed with.
    May 03, 2013, 09:34:59 AM
  • hiyu64: Well, there will always be shit talkers.  I'm against getting mods involved.  Asshole or not, that guy is entitled to his opinion.  Deleting his posts will just create backlash. people will ask why are negative opinions of IF being deleted/censored?
    May 03, 2013, 09:33:38 AM
  • sachu: and tyll, you shouldn't be giving that sorta talk any importance. pointing it out only highlights a not so ideal post regarding your enterprise. so why do it. If he keeps up on it by posting in a derogatory and negative vein, then have the mods take action for malicious behavior. Else fuck it.
    May 03, 2013, 09:21:27 AM
  • RudeWolf: I've never wanted anything that bad that I felt the need to haggle. I'm always afraid to sound like a cheapskate, haha! Tho all of my gear is bought second hand or diy-ed.
    May 03, 2013, 09:20:49 AM
  • PhoenixClaw: My parents tried to haggle phone prices and it was both embarrassing and hilarious to see them asking salespeople for discounts.
    May 03, 2013, 09:20:07 AM
  • sachu: its not an asian thing although asians do indulge in  ahigher degree..boils down to feeling good psychologically about getting a price break however small it may be to the buyer.
    May 03, 2013, 09:19:27 AM
  • sachu: in a business that's a luxury, its a buyer's market..deal with the bullshit or get left behind. ANd i know the pains having built some stuff on way low end scale.

  • hiyu64: Last time, my mom, my sister, and I went to a small custom violin shop that makes its own violins/bows to buy a new bow for my sister after someone stepped on her previous bow.  After my sister picked out her bow, the first thing my mom asks is "Do you give discounts?" and the saleslady gave out an awkward "uh, no I'm sorry...".  I think the saleslady was stumped when my mom asked that.  It was our first time at the shop and we've never dealt with them before.
    May 03, 2013, 09:16:41 AM
  • PhoenixClaw: I guess it carried over to boutique items as well.
    May 03, 2013, 09:14:09 AM
  • PhoenixClaw: It's in our blood. We know everyone wants a good price, but in the face of many sellers we can just take our business elsewhere if we don't like the price.
    May 03, 2013, 09:13:49 AM
  • hiyu64: agreed on the asian part.  The ones I know will always try haggling if it can be done.  no matter how small the chance is
    May 03, 2013, 09:09:04 AM
  • sachu: nice track from one with a great voice [link]
    May 03, 2013, 09:08:45 AM
  • twizzleraddict: Haggling is just a way of life for Asians. Expectations of blame on manufacturer/vendor because of production delays seems to be just a sense of fuckin' entitlement, that happens to egotistical people who think they deserve to be handed blessings from God. Or whatever it is that floats their boat.
    May 03, 2013, 09:00:25 AM
  • hiyu64: it's cultural difference
    May 03, 2013, 08:58:59 AM

    May 03, 2013, 08:49:11 AM
  • RudeWolf: Is it that common to always ask for a discount in your neck of the woods? I usually hate haggling...
    May 03, 2013, 08:48:04 AM
  • justin w.: thats what happened to me so the guy asked for a "relevant discount".  i asked what that was and he said 15-20%
    May 03, 2013, 08:46:30 AM
  • RudeWolf: That guy must wake up one day with an aluminum billet in the bed.
    May 03, 2013, 08:39:21 AM
  • schiit: And that's why we've probably had more "Penalization for production misfortune" than anyone else. Newsflash: we use an assembly house for the PCB work, two local metal vendors, and a transformer manufacturer in California. If they say they're delivering May 1, and it ends up delivering May 14, well, hey, we're boned. Nothing we can do about it. Worse, if they deliver perfect prototypes and crap production runs, well, then you're looking at 1-2 months of bonage. No way around it. No magic wands. No nanoassemblers. Just a fact of life. Do we feel bad when we pass along a production date that slips because a vendor slipped or shipped crap? Sure. Can we do anything about it? Sure. But it doesn't happen overnight. Sorry, just venting on the life of a small manufacturer. I'm sure Justin knows how it goes.
    May 03, 2013, 08:36:07 AM
  • justin w.: oh, i must not know your name then
    May 03, 2013, 08:35:14 AM
  • shipsupt: Now we know how you're making all that good schitt for cheap, nano-bots!
    May 03, 2013, 08:29:14 AM

    May 03, 2013, 08:12:05 AM

    May 03, 2013, 08:11:30 AM
  • shipsupt: Justin, you must know by now that the customer is always right, even when they are raving lunatics!
    May 03, 2013, 08:09:38 AM

    May 03, 2013, 08:06:45 AM

  • purrin: I don't think people understand the constraints you are under.
    May 03, 2013, 07:23:15 AM
  • MuppetFace: People put way too much of their egos into their gear and get really personal about it, so it wouldn't surprise me.
    May 03, 2013, 07:16:17 AM
  • MuppetFace: You probably gave one of his favorite headphones a less-than-perfect review, so he just has an axe to grind or something.
    May 03, 2013, 07:15:40 AM
  • Tyll Hertsens: He makes so many false assumptions it's unbelievable. But I don't want to waste my breath dealing with it. None the less, it fucking sticks in my craw 'cuz I work so hard to be as truthful as I can. He says I only review new stuff, but it's actually very rare that I do. I fucking reviewed HD600/650, and DT880, and...well fuck. Just really painful to hear that bullshit.
    May 03, 2013, 07:13:35 AM
  • MuppetFace: That guy is an asshole. I remember getting into an argument with him on head-fi in the past.

    May 03, 2013, 07:00:59 AM
  • Analixus: Oops, carry on.  ;)
    May 02, 2013, 11:40:01 PM
  • RudeWolf: These things are best done in smd altogether.
    May 02, 2013, 11:34:05 PM
  • RudeWolf: We are talking about a digital high frequency circuit that's extremely sensitive to EMI.
    May 02, 2013, 11:31:55 PM
  • Analixus: Bigger is usually better for caps IME.  Damping > path length.
    May 02, 2013, 11:12:48 PM
  • gurubhai: I am using a huge polystyrene cap though & still heard a major improvement. Directly soldered it to the pins keeping the leads as small as possible.
    May 02, 2013, 10:51:37 PM
  • gurubhai: smd NPO ceramics would be your best bet.
    May 02, 2013, 10:47:37 PM
  • RudeWolf: Maintaining a short path is of utmost importance if I want to get some sort of improvement.
    May 02, 2013, 10:46:25 PM
  • RudeWolf: I always happen to order too big capacitors...
    May 02, 2013, 10:43:52 PM
  • gurubhai: You should try the loop filter mod RW, it does make a difference.
    May 02, 2013, 10:42:53 PM
  • RudeWolf: And as I said- the bufferless sound was cleaner but only when I swapped out the old buffer with the new composite- only then I attained what I would call a clear advantage. You need to be sure that the IV stage all by itself can handle the load you are about present to it. I don't think that the 1600 IV stage liked the 2k impedance. Hence the improvement when adding the new buffer.
    May 02, 2013, 10:36:47 PM
  • RudeWolf: @Sachu - the difference was what I would call major- clearly evident no matter the downstream gear or the state of mind when listening. Tho when I looked at the Assemblage gut shot I didn't see a discrete buffer, are you sure about bypassing it?
    May 02, 2013, 10:33:29 PM
  • firev1: Also wonder what jitter is like on the cdac+/any 4160 isolated dac vs the original since the chip adds 3ns(iirc) into the signal. But it seems like a trivial matter compared to the benefits though. Jitter is overrated.
    May 02, 2013, 06:56:44 PM
  • firev1: Anyways recently investigated into the cost of building something like an OR and I'm really impressed with what Empirical did with it, since optocouplers add 100ps of jitter already.
    May 02, 2013, 06:52:30 PM
  • firev1: will be doing the cDAC+ but not sure which regulator, I want to try something new.
    May 02, 2013, 06:50:27 PM
  • sachu: major difference you did notice rudewolf?
    May 02, 2013, 03:33:48 PM
  • sachu: uses the same ones that are in the parasound DAC 1600
    May 02, 2013, 03:33:31 PM
  • sachu: i need to try bypassing the buffers on my assemblage DAC 3.1
    May 02, 2013, 03:33:18 PM
  • RudeWolf: Also I'm getting more and more interested in putting together a fully SMD headamp- [link]
    May 02, 2013, 02:03:10 PM
  • RudeWolf: In any case I wouldn't pay more than 500$ for these DACs. I'm looking to put together cDAC+ with a Sjorstrom Super regulator and god forbid if it sounds better...
    May 02, 2013, 01:53:41 PM
  • Mr.Sneis: well, his price = to the separates price.  I am driving down that way in a few weeks...
    May 02, 2013, 01:53:12 PM
  • RudeWolf: Could be... Maybe some flippage going on.
    May 02, 2013, 01:52:01 PM
  • Mr.Sneis: went from woodland ca to santa ana?
    May 02, 2013, 01:49:07 PM
  • Mr.Sneis: I find this curous.  That a'gon listing seems like it could in fact be the same one I was bidding for on ebay.... [link]
    May 02, 2013, 01:48:08 PM
  • RudeWolf: Well, I sure as hell like the looks of good Parasound stack! [link]
    May 02, 2013, 01:39:22 PM
  • Mr.Sneis: [link] grumble
    May 02, 2013, 01:36:42 PM
  • RudeWolf: If only I knew how to get rid of the daughter board to run my 1600 in SE only... I could use the spare two PCM63K to whip up a nice modern DAC with fancy digital end and SMD parts all round!
    May 02, 2013, 01:33:51 PM
  • RudeWolf: If I remember correctly the prices on these old beasts have jumped. Most likely because people are trying to get the PMD100+2XPCM63K chip combo.
    May 02, 2013, 01:30:57 PM
  • Mr.Sneis: If only I could find another 1100
    May 02, 2013, 01:28:04 PM
  • Mr.Sneis: I thought I heard that too... ie the 1100 sounding better
    May 02, 2013, 01:27:30 PM
  • RudeWolf: If anything the 1600 may sound worse than a 1100 due to extra wires from the digital filter to the daughter board.
    May 02, 2013, 01:23:22 PM
  • RudeWolf: The 1500 has a different output buffer. Haven't seen the schematics but the gut-shots make it obvious. As you know 1100 and 1600 are pretty much identical.
    May 02, 2013, 01:22:08 PM
  • RudeWolf: To conclude on a more positive note- the 1600 with bypassed buffers came dangerously close to a Buffalo 3 (IVY+no FIFO).
    May 02, 2013, 01:19:20 PM
  • Mr.Sneis: I dont know why but from my memory I liked the 1100/1600 better than the 1500
    May 02, 2013, 01:18:57 PM
  • RudeWolf: To be honest these old Parasound DACs are pretty simple in design- IV stages right off the chip datasheet and a meaty PSU to power it all. Sure, it works- but It's no even near what can be achieved with said DAC chips.
    May 02, 2013, 01:17:06 PM
  • RudeWolf: But the Ultra Analog DAC might be grossly overrated due to its scarcity. I'm 95% sure they don't do much if any better than a PCM63K.
    May 02, 2013, 01:13:12 PM
  • RudeWolf: Regarding the 2000- it's obvious that they finally decided to throw the MOSFET space heater out of the window so the DAC doesn't shoot itself in the leg.
    May 02, 2013, 01:11:28 PM
  • Mr.Sneis: at least with usb spdif converters you can get good but rate limited usb input!
    May 02, 2013, 01:08:18 PM
  • RudeWolf: I might try to do the WildMonekySects (?) receiver loopout mod. Other than that I can't see much else to be done.
    May 02, 2013, 01:08:14 PM
  • RudeWolf: And the Audiotuning kits seem more of a sidegrade.
    May 02, 2013, 01:06:06 PM
  • RudeWolf: Imo you can do a lot to the analog stage but ultimately it will be bottlenecked by the now archaic digital receiver.
    May 02, 2013, 01:05:16 PM
  • RudeWolf: Everything got better. I retained the clean sound and resolution that I got when running straight from the opamps but now with more authority in lows and better highs.
    May 02, 2013, 01:04:00 PM
  • Mr.Sneis: It seems the old parasounds are good candidates for modding but I have a hard time finding what exactly is meant by the modding!
    May 02, 2013, 01:02:38 PM
  • RudeWolf: I'm pretty sure this is what is often meant by night-day difference.
    May 02, 2013, 01:02:33 PM
  • Mr.Sneis: sry meant audiotuning earlier
    May 02, 2013, 01:01:56 PM
  • RudeWolf: So now I dremeled off the whole bit where the MOSFETs were and put OPA134/BUF634 buffers on the old heatsinks.
    May 02, 2013, 01:01:10 PM
  • Mr.Sneis: So you're just using it stock again?
    May 02, 2013, 01:01:00 PM
  • RudeWolf: The IV stage uses pretty solid opamps but now I'm sure that they didn't like the load of my Joshua Tree attenuator.

  • Mr.Sneis: I don't think you have a need for them but I have that audionote parasound upgrade kit.  I don't think it's meant to work as well on the 1600 or 1100 though I am not sure
    May 02, 2013, 12:59:27 PM
  • RudeWolf: Initially I completely bypassed the output buffers which are simple MOSFET followers. These things introduce a ton off distortion.
    May 02, 2013, 12:58:16 PM
  • Mr.Sneis: and do you happen to know anything about the 2000 ultra?  I was in an ebay bidding war a few weeks back and had to give up.  It got crazy
    May 02, 2013, 12:56:22 PM
  • Mr.Sneis: RW, I recall you mentioning something about disabling something in the 1600 to positive effect; what exactly did you do?
    May 02, 2013, 12:55:44 PM
  • RudeWolf: Oh, and the offset only became apparent only on higher temps.
    May 02, 2013, 12:54:19 PM
  • RudeWolf: When I just received my Para 1600 it had nasty DC offset of 5V in one channel due to something. However I'd rather blame a misbiased buffer. I did run pretty hot tho.
    May 02, 2013, 12:52:52 PM
  • Mr.Sneis: Yeah it supposedly runs pretty warm
    May 02, 2013, 12:48:14 PM
  • RudeWolf: Does the Hilo run hot? I mean I have hard time figuring out how would anything drift over time but some 'lyte caps. And even then they wouldn't/shouldn't drift outside the specified range.
    May 02, 2013, 12:47:02 PM
  • Analixus: Actually, I have to say the Hilo has changed the least compared to most of the gear I'm used to sampling.  It's quite stable relatively speaking.  The BHA-1 being the worst I've experienced so far.
    May 02, 2013, 12:32:55 PM
  • RudeWolf: I think that they mean a natural drift in characteristics over time. Electrolyte caps drying out and such. Still it's about a decade if not more.
    May 02, 2013, 12:30:13 PM
  • dBel84: this is why I don't get all manufacturers running in their amps for at least 100 hours and resetting biases etc when the amp is cooking  - things change as they settle
    May 02, 2013, 12:27:04 PM
  • Analixus: How interesting, according to Lynx, "over time, due to changes in temperature, it may become necessary to adjust the trim pots." Manufacturer admission of burn-in/warm-up affects?  Ooooo..... :o
    May 02, 2013, 12:16:05 PM
  • Questhate: Anyone here from Denver?
    May 02, 2013, 11:33:48 AM
  • Analixus: so what's up w/ your Stratus?
    May 02, 2013, 10:16:20 AM
  • Girls Generation: yeah im waiting on the stratus to warm up :P
    May 02, 2013, 10:06:54 AM
  • Analixus: bingo, yup
    May 02, 2013, 10:06:31 AM
  • MuppetFace: Yeah, amps tend to take a while to reach their optimal sound in my experience, both tube and solid state. I think I've actually encountered a few amps that did sound worse over time. Like, they got kind of fuzzy sounding. Kind of surprised me.
    May 02, 2013, 10:00:56 AM
  • Analixus: I wait 2 days on SS before settling on an impression.
    May 02, 2013, 09:58:38 AM
  • Analixus: Kind of depends on the tube amp in question and what's in it.  After an hour, you should feel pretty secure about what you are hearing.  Some are much quicker.
    May 02, 2013, 09:57:46 AM
  • Analixus: some sound worse but at least they're stable.....
    May 02, 2013, 09:55:42 AM
  • dBel84: I think all amps sound their best after at least 30 min
    May 02, 2013, 09:51:19 AM
  • Valentin Hogea: 20-40 mins?
    May 02, 2013, 09:43:37 AM
  • Girls Generation: How long do you guys normally give tube amps to warm up?
    May 02, 2013, 09:33:46 AM
  • twizzleraddict: @HideousPride, awesome. Will wait until things settle down for LFF. No rushhhhhh. :)
    May 01, 2013, 07:57:00 PM
  • PhoenixClaw: Do the tzar 90 and 350 have the same issues as their previous iems?
    May 01, 2013, 07:31:34 PM
  • HideousPride: @twizzler, the painted Paradox LFF sent me looked pretty damn flawless. He's a bit of perfectionist, so I'm sure he'd do a fantastic job with your request
    May 01, 2013, 06:48:45 PM
  • MuppetFace: It's automotive paint, yes.
    May 01, 2013, 03:50:51 PM
  • Mr.Sneis: I'm mentally checkout out for the day already lol.
    May 01, 2013, 03:31:22 PM
  • twizzleraddict: Has anyone had their headphones custom painted by LFF? Just curious the level of quality and durability of the paint. If automotive paint is used, would be awesome.
    May 01, 2013, 03:22:06 PM
  • AstralStorm: power on par with modded HE500, except cleaner and faster Nearly flat sound without eq (non diffuse field)
    May 01, 2013, 11:59:22 AM
  • AstralStorm: extra bass force plus better damping plus no need for sucky filter plus extra extension both ways
    May 01, 2013, 11:56:09 AM
  • AstralStorm: mmm, RE400 with Comply foams and the mods are major win
    May 01, 2013, 11:55:16 AM

    May 01, 2013, 09:38:33 AM

    May 01, 2013, 09:35:57 AM
  • twizzleraddict: Is LFF dead? Sent him a request a while back thru his site about 3 wks ago and never heard back.

  • gelocks: *which*
    May 01, 2013, 07:31:39 AM
  • gelocks: Finally, still don't know why Ultrasone I should keep!! I am LOVING both the Signature Pros and Signature DJs! Pros are a bit more laidback so I'll probably sell those. ($$$ will go to the Paradox! ;))
    May 01, 2013, 07:31:21 AM
  • gelocks: I also joined the Grain Audio Kickstarter for ther over-ears headphones... Not sure why. Well, I know, I'm compulsive.! :-p
    May 01, 2013, 07:27:51 AM
  • gelocks: So... hopefully LFF doesn't make as many updates as the Mad Dogs to his Paradox mods... LOL. Yesterday I received a newsletter from Dan detailing the Mod Versions... I'm still two "updates" behind it seems, and it's going to stay that way for a bit! Luis!! I still want the pictures for the other colors available!!! (at least they are not on your website yet...)

    April 29, 2013, 11:46:36 PM
  • Kunlun: He left behind 7 children though, so I'm sorry he's dead. I do wish he'd stopped being a jerk and also a doctor prior to death.
    April 29, 2013, 10:56:55 PM
  • Kunlun: @philip Naw, he didn't listen to the patient I referred him. He was a knowitall asshole who stopped listening to patients once he made up his mind. A very smart guy, but a terrible doctor. I spoke in private about him with a doctor who told me that he'd never refer a patient to the guy.
    April 29, 2013, 10:51:27 PM
  • firev1: Awesome shipsupt! Meets here are a lot smaller since the ones who want one have no resources and those who do are either too cheapskate or cba to organise one.

  • phillip88: wow ship! Those are cool! p/s: Kunlun, anyway RIP for a doctor who saves lives.
    April 29, 2013, 09:51:22 PM
  • Kunlun: Huh, a guy a know passed away unexpectedly last night. He was a very successful doctor who was also a pretty serious jerk. I'm sorry he died. He had a sudden reaction to something he ate and the adrenaline shot he received had no effect for some reason. The moral of the story: You could die at any moment, so don't be a jerk or I will post about you in the shoutbox of an audio website.
    April 29, 2013, 09:50:02 PM

  • Kunlun: N.B. I have mine at less than that, maybe 1/8th open. Sure, it will be bass heavy and have more lower register resonance as the vent is more opened.
    April 29, 2013, 08:03:08 AM
  • Kunlun: Sorry Tyll! I'd like to hear more about the unevenness you're hearing. Bass, mids and treble seem to come together pretty well--did you have the adjustable bass vent turned way up? Even Dale Lott only has his at 1/4 or less.
    April 29, 2013, 07:07:41 AM
  • shotgunshane: Tyll, can you elaborate on what you mean by uneven?
    April 29, 2013, 06:50:16 AM
  • PhoenixClaw: wow that makes me want to get my pair even more so i can hear it for myself
    April 29, 2013, 06:25:35 AM
  • Tyll Hertsens: Can't measure them because they don't fit in the head's ears. I can't believe you like them, Kunlun, they sound really bad to me, very uneven.
    April 29, 2013, 06:12:05 AM
  • PhoenixClaw: Since Tyll is reviewing them he might get some measurements done?
    April 29, 2013, 05:28:05 AM

    April 28, 2013, 09:44:14 PM
  • AstralStorm: the non-eq though sounds way worse than with the filter, I see the reason for it despite the other detrimental qualities :|
    April 28, 2013, 07:29:10 PM
  • AstralStorm: yep, RE-400 at hyperspatial speed now
    April 28, 2013, 07:27:27 PM
  • AstralStorm: I think the HF peaks are from the nozzle reflection - maybe placing a ring of foam/cotton there will help as long as it doesn't obscure nozzle itself
    April 28, 2013, 07:24:00 PM
  • AstralStorm: ok, peaks in the highest end went sharper and deeper, but a bit of highest end extension improved: [link] - in fact, less resonant I think and a tiny bit faster too
    April 28, 2013, 07:21:19 PM
  • AstralStorm: not much of a change, checking...
    April 28, 2013, 07:10:25 PM
  • AstralStorm: I'll try tossing the filter now, since the FR is now different due to damping
    April 28, 2013, 07:08:15 PM
  • AstralStorm: pity nowhere near that on the high side: only 16.8k
    April 28, 2013, 07:06:38 PM
  • AstralStorm: they go down to 17 Hz, stupendous!
    April 28, 2013, 07:06:04 PM
  • AstralStorm: (modded and equalized)
    April 28, 2013, 07:05:28 PM
  • AstralStorm: I'm still being enamored *again* with RE-400, so I'm not entirely thinking straight
    April 28, 2013, 07:05:19 PM
  • Tari: Looks very precarious.  I suppose the designers think they look good.
    April 28, 2013, 07:02:45 PM
  • AstralStorm: funky legs, what are they good for?
    April 28, 2013, 07:01:55 PM
  • Tari: Well, ended up finding a different one: [link] by Stylos.  Oh well, maybe the company I was looking for folded.
    April 28, 2013, 07:01:24 PM
  • Tari: Nope, if I remembered the name I would be able to google it myself.  All the googling has led to naught.  Product line had one dac called DAC or something.
    April 28, 2013, 06:53:55 PM
  • AstralStorm: however those are actually excellent DACs (and the DACs don't look as alien as their CD transports)
    April 28, 2013, 06:53:19 PM
  • AstralStorm: Metronome Tech. look more like alien creatures instead
    April 28, 2013, 06:52:09 PM
  • AstralStorm: neither of those qualifies I think
    April 28, 2013, 06:48:39 PM
  • AstralStorm: there's TotalDAC and Atoll
    April 28, 2013, 06:48:31 PM
  • AstralStorm: a name would help though
    April 28, 2013, 06:47:55 PM
  • Tari: For the record it could suck, I'm not assuming anything.  I just mentioned it to someone today as a cool concept in the looks department and was looking around for it.  Instead of help I get this garbage.  If I want unfounded drivel there are other sites I can go to.
    April 28, 2013, 06:39:09 PM
  • Tari: So based on your "often"  = "sounds like its not going to be any good." - thanks for jumping in there.  I couldn't have made any such assumption on my own.  I would have assumed it was amazing based on the looks, when all along I should have assumed it was horrible based on the looks.
    April 28, 2013, 06:37:42 PM
  • AstralStorm: they often are in "high end" gear; either you sell technical capability, or screw it and just sell for the looks and status
    April 28, 2013, 06:16:17 PM
  • Tari: Right, but you are saying money went not into design or components but fancy exterior - either you know about the DAC or you assume that spending money on casework and spending money on components are somehow mutually exclusive?
    April 28, 2013, 05:13:52 PM
  • AstralStorm: no, I mean marble/granite is expensive and adds nothing to audio experience (even in case of tubes)
    April 28, 2013, 05:07:55 PM
  • Tari: Are you sure you're not familiar with it?  Because you seem to know money didn't go into design or components.
    April 28, 2013, 05:02:04 PM
  • AstralStorm: sounds like it's not going to be any good - since money went not into design or components, but fancy exterior - no, I'm not familiar with that one
    April 28, 2013, 04:55:10 PM
  • Tari: Driving myself crazy trying to find something - its a DAC, made by a french company, sort of in the visual style of the analog DAC where it almost looks like a shelf to support components, but it has either marble or granite on top.  Ring a bell with anyone?
    April 28, 2013, 04:53:37 PM
  • AstralStorm: one thing they coudl use is yet more extension in the highest end, maybe RE-600 will have that
    April 28, 2013, 04:52:13 PM
  • AstralStorm: buy them while they last, mod them and solder in a DF simulator circuit
    April 28, 2013, 04:47:03 PM
  • AstralStorm: wow now those RE-400 win with the headphones. wtf now. Fang really created something special with that driver
    April 28, 2013, 04:46:34 PM
  • AstralStorm: that's why damping the shit out of them made them "flat" sounding (non-DF) - of course the resonant cavity introduces very complex resonant modes, unlike the equalizer - and also why they now use a metal shell - nicer sounding resonances
    April 28, 2013, 04:41:21 PM
  • AstralStorm: I think I know how dr Fang tunes the IEMs: they make the flattest driver possible in free field, then add a correct resonant cavity to equalize, coupled with a filter foam
    April 28, 2013, 04:39:22 PM
  • AstralStorm: oh, and isolation also went up, but I'm not entirely sure by how much
    April 28, 2013, 04:34:27 PM
  • AstralStorm: bass now has power more than what's presented by the Comply tips, but less visceral and romantic than jergpadded HE-500, but more controlled.
    April 28, 2013, 04:21:52 PM
  • AstralStorm: the main win is complete lack of long highs decay and no shoutiness at all; slightly faster bass to boot. Obviously, damping is much preferable to no damping.  :)p3
    April 28, 2013, 04:20:40 PM
  • AstralStorm: very similar to diffuse field eq
    April 28, 2013, 04:18:18 PM
  • AstralStorm: Here's the eq for those, I'll have to correctly attach the strain reliefs which might change it due to less venting: [link]
    April 28, 2013, 04:17:39 PM
  • AstralStorm: less dark, otherwise very similar, very nicely dampened, but more air
    April 28, 2013, 12:13:40 PM
  • AstralStorm: they now sound like Paradox
    April 28, 2013, 11:57:16 AM
  • AstralStorm: it's... *superb*
    April 28, 2013, 11:55:46 AM
  • AstralStorm: mmm, fixed Re-400 with VSonic GR07 cable and added cotton dampening
    April 28, 2013, 11:55:31 AM
  • AstralStorm: might be that not fully corrected 8k dip
    April 28, 2013, 04:05:26 AM
  • AstralStorm: HE-500 sound like someone is "exploding" sound onto you, with infinite power, but nowhere near as sprightly as paradox superb control in the highs (once equalized of course)
    April 28, 2013, 04:04:37 AM
  • AstralStorm: *on modded HE-500
    April 28, 2013, 04:03:37 AM
  • AstralStorm: one thing paradox have on HE-500 is that they sound faster in highs
    April 28, 2013, 04:03:27 AM
  • AstralStorm: I'll also fix the cable on RE-400 today, because why not
    April 28, 2013, 03:28:18 AM
  • AstralStorm: not sure which material though - thoughts?
    April 28, 2013, 03:26:16 AM
  • AstralStorm: I've another idea for a mod: instead of getting rid of the grille, I could try attaching some grille-shaped dampening to it
    April 28, 2013, 03:25:54 AM
  • AstralStorm: dammit, I've had an extended listen both to paradox and modded he-500. HE-500 wins. Handily.
    April 28, 2013, 03:25:20 AM
  • Mr.Sneis: I must know how it would compare to my stello da100s

    April 27, 2013, 11:36:50 AM

  • Analixus: I was thinking the same thing about insulation but wasn't sure if there were any powdercoats based on ceramics (Cerakote) at which point the opposite would be true.  The irony is, an amp like the S7 is quite efficient for Class A putting out minimal heat apart from the tubes.
    April 27, 2013, 11:22:44 AM
  • firev1: thanks ultrabike! (^o^)
    April 27, 2013, 06:20:47 AM
  • kevin gilmore: if you want to actually use it as a heatsink it has to be anodized. powder coat is a thermal insulator.
    April 27, 2013, 05:36:49 AM
  • ultrabike: Happy BDAY firev1! :)p1
    April 27, 2013, 02:52:50 AM
  • Mr.Sneis: Curious what exactly your idea of telling each other to fuck off all day means exactly
    April 27, 2013, 12:50:15 AM
  • twizzleraddict: [link]
    April 26, 2013, 11:32:05 PM
  • firev1: The Gungnir just got very very tempting with those upgraded I/Os
    April 26, 2013, 08:43:47 PM
  • Analixus: Yup.  Maybe people are just used to orange peel textures like their cars.  I like powder coat if I can Justin to do the wet sand my amps in his sleep.  Normal powder coat on a color like black makes an amp look like cottage cheese thighs w/o wet sanding.  No thanks.
    April 26, 2013, 06:38:31 PM
  • Stapsy: Are the DNA amps powdercoated?  That blue color doesn't look like any anodizing I have seen
    April 26, 2013, 06:02:31 PM
  • Analixus: Oh, I'd avoid talking to Craig for a couople weeks, it's not a good time unless you have a product issue.  We've been telling each other to fuck off all day.
    April 26, 2013, 06:01:44 PM
  • Analixus: Cheap and uniform which powdercoating is not unless you pay for it.  Cheap powder coating is atrocious and if you look at the price bracket of the Super7 and ZD along w/ his design motif, it should all make some sense.  Besides, proper anodizing is quite resilient if done right as mine and other's are.  Bad batches happen no matter what the technique, it's about craftsmanship.
    April 26, 2013, 05:55:17 PM
  • burnspbesq: Is there an engineering reason why the case has to anodized (vs. powdercoating)?
    April 26, 2013, 05:50:30 PM
  • Analixus: They must be getting cheap over there, I handle my side panels all the time going inside the Super 7 and it's pitch black still.  I'd say if you have the textured finish and polished top you're in good shape.
    April 26, 2013, 05:43:05 PM
  • Analixus: judging by the patterns and the rsa knob, it seems likely to be skin oils
    April 26, 2013, 05:41:28 PM
  • hiyu64: Well, Craig needs to tell his guy that does the anodizing to step it up.  Most EC amps aren't designed for aesthetics in the first place, but having a number of your amps turning weird colors isn't exactly good for your sales.
    April 26, 2013, 05:37:17 PM
  • kevin gilmore: heat has nothing to do with the discoloration. Otherwise the diy-T2 would be turning colors, and they are not. I paid extra for the hard clear coat finish
    April 26, 2013, 05:31:52 PM
  • Girls Generation: Yeah... Craig was really curt with me when I asked if he had any demos of any of his products lying around that I could borrow for Seattle and Vancouver meets...
    April 26, 2013, 04:10:04 PM
  • Stapsy: Yup I feel that pain..I must distract myself from buying a new DAC for a few months or else I will end up with a Gungnir and a statement DAC
    April 26, 2013, 03:17:07 PM
  • Analixus: I guess you might be skipping the Gungnir then.
    April 26, 2013, 03:15:46 PM
  • hiyu64: well if the statement is around $1500-2000 I might just skip the gungnir and go for that
    April 26, 2013, 03:09:14 PM
  • Mr.Sneis: Will always be wanting the statement dac lol
    April 26, 2013, 03:06:43 PM
  • hiyu64: Now, I just have to figure out some way to pawn off my Audio GD on HF, which shouldn't be too hard hehe.
    April 26, 2013, 02:58:38 PM
  • hiyu64: I'm actually looking to get a gungnir...good to hear the usb board has been upgraded
    April 26, 2013, 02:57:36 PM
  • purrin: LOL, yeah
    April 26, 2013, 02:41:23 PM
  • schiit: Statement will not be Sabre, that's for sure.
    April 26, 2013, 01:58:45 PM
  • Stapsy: Hmm I am not sure i will be able to resist the gugnir for much longer
    April 26, 2013, 01:58:23 PM
  • Mr.Sneis: :o
    April 26, 2013, 01:49:49 PM
  • anetode: ...at least for variety's sake
    April 26, 2013, 01:38:56 PM
  • anetode: still can't beat two akms a la gungnir. i kinda hope the statement won't be the standard 9018 with 4/2 stereo
    April 26, 2013, 01:38:26 PM
  • Mr.Sneis: rather the power supply not the amp itself...  I get the impression basically he doesn't like me so to speak but I've been nothing but super nice and not overbearing.  I do love all of his amps I've heard though :(
    April 26, 2013, 01:29:44 PM
  • Mr.Sneis: FYI - the Balancing act I got I sent to craig to check out because I felt the transformers were abnormally loud.  There was also some scratches that seemed out of the ordinary on the finish that was not from handling.  It took a lot of coaxing for him to "accept" it
    April 26, 2013, 01:28:23 PM
  • Mr.Sneis: You sent the amp back to craig?  I'm surprised he agreed to look at it lol - what was the conversation like?
    April 26, 2013, 01:27:09 PM
  • schiit: Thank you! We've made some changes to the site to make it clear you're getting the Gen 2 USB when you order USB on either product now.
    April 26, 2013, 01:09:16 PM
  • Analixus: Yeah, just upgrade this Modi to a Statement DAC and we're good.
    April 26, 2013, 01:07:48 PM
  • mkubota1: Really cool to see you guys following through on your promise of upgradability!
    April 26, 2013, 01:04:32 PM
  • schiit: Everything has been shipping with the Gen2 USB for about a month--it's standard on all new Bifrosts and Gungnirs.
    April 26, 2013, 12:59:24 PM
  • Stapsy: Or if getting the new usb would mean an extra 200 vs 100 bucks for usb
    April 26, 2013, 12:56:54 PM
  • Stapsy: I wonder if the usb upgrade will now be the standard upgrade for the bifrost or gugnir
    April 26, 2013, 12:56:05 PM
  • mkubota1: "This DAC/Analog upgrade card improves the sonic and measured performance of Bifrost, using a discrete, direct-coupled gain stage from Gungnir."  I wonder if that means: Gungnir on the cheap?

  • hiyu64: Well, Just sent my S7 to Craig for repairs.  I still couldn't figure out where the clicking came from while corresponding with Craig via email.  I really hope it was actually the tubes and I was just an idiot and couldn't figure out which since I was planning on getting new tube soon anyway.
    April 26, 2013, 12:26:44 PM
  • Analixus: Well, the finish is supposed to be durable, that's the point.  Hell, send every amp back to Craig he's ever made, maybe he'll get the point.
    April 26, 2013, 11:50:42 AM
  • twizzleraddict: And my comment was not meant in any way to minimize the amount of effort that Craig and other small companies go through to build each amp custom. I'd still be buying primarily for performance but the aesthetics do factor into the decision making as well.
    April 26, 2013, 11:47:35 AM
  • twizzleraddict: Unfortunately, this rules doesn't apply to a lot of other industries. Take my POS BMW after after 3-4 yrs where the interior is starting to fall apart vs. the Honda after 10 yrs still holding up swimmingly! :p
    April 26, 2013, 11:41:57 AM
  • twizzleraddict: I would think at those prices you pay for gear, you would spend the extra attention to detail to ensure top notch craftsmanship and avoid discoloring due to heat, etc. Customers should expect no less when pay for gear in the thousands of dollars range, IMO.
    April 26, 2013, 11:39:40 AM
  • Mr.Sneis: :( Seems like one should be very careful handling the anodized finishes; not cleaning with chemicals, handling with kid gloves and such
    April 26, 2013, 11:37:52 AM
  • kevin gilmore: Rsa has the same anodizing problems lately too, comes from not correctly sealing after the acid etch

    April 26, 2013, 10:34:13 AM
  • Mr.Sneis: Then there is the s7 on the forums right now that looks super discolored; I think the lighting isn't doing it any favors
    April 26, 2013, 10:33:45 AM
  • Mr.Sneis: The Zana Deux I recently sold had similar discoloring... you can look in my old FS listing for it
    April 26, 2013, 10:33:17 AM
  • Girls Generation: tbh bronze doesn't look that bad :P
    April 26, 2013, 10:20:30 AM
  • Analixus: I've only seen one S7 that was sent back to him and as far as I know that was the only model that had a batch issue.  You're telling me you've seen a bronze ZD or BA?
    April 26, 2013, 10:10:02 AM
  • Analixus: What other ones?
    April 26, 2013, 10:08:34 AM
  • Mr.Sneis: I have seen this discoloring on a few of the EC amps now.  Seems like whoever he uses/used sucks.  I love Craigs amps a lot but there are certain other things about them that are really not passable imo.  He's no Justin that's for sure!
    April 26, 2013, 09:38:04 AM
  • Mr.Sneis: problem is the screenprint I think
    April 26, 2013, 09:36:43 AM
  • Mr.Sneis: If you're handy I bet you could get it re-anodized locally
    April 26, 2013, 09:36:32 AM
  • Stapsy: I just bought one that was discolored from Craig because he offered me a discount on it. I figured I would just use the money I saved to buy tubes. SQ>looks
    April 26, 2013, 09:28:34 AM
  • jmcmasterj: I may ask him to eventually. I just haven't wanted to part with it
    April 26, 2013, 08:41:00 AM
  • Analixus: Are you gonna have him fix it?
    April 26, 2013, 08:23:37 AM
  • Analixus: Ouch.  You bought it that way from Craig without knowing and it just showed up like that?
    April 26, 2013, 08:22:20 AM
  • firev1: meant to say without but yeh, besides repeating all the promotional material of the essence one, they expected the audience to evaluate their dacs on HD700s and karaoke speakers.
    April 26, 2013, 07:35:20 AM
  • jmcmasterj: My Super 7 is also discolored. It was that way when it arrived
    April 26, 2013, 06:41:24 AM
  • PhoenixClaw: Ooohh.. that sucks... In our local sennheiser event they demoed the IE800, Momentums and Amperiors. I think there were one or two HD800s and a lone HD700.
    April 26, 2013, 05:47:23 AM
  • firev1: Headed to a sennheiser and asus event , utterly regretted coming with the hd800s in toll or at all. All the Essence one kits are demoed with the HD700s :(

  • Girls Generation: Yeah Anal, hit all points there took them right out of my mouth. It's too bad that one is weirdly bronze, otherwise I would've had it sitting next to me in an instant.

    April 25, 2013, 11:42:15 PM
  • Analixus: They were decent, better than the first.  I think if they could have been had for the original price around $150 they would have been great (assuming they fit your ears).  But the price was another 100 over for $250 so that was a deal breaker IMO.
    April 25, 2013, 11:40:39 PM
  • PhoenixClaw: Were the DDM2s good in the first place? I never got a chance to try them
    April 25, 2013, 11:31:07 PM

  • Analixus: Let me know when Onkyo goes back to being Onkyo.
    April 25, 2013, 11:08:49 PM
  • Analixus: Oh it's the one that turned bronze, figures.  Btw, his is the only one I know of that turned bronze so not sure what he means other owners.  Month and a half.  I think some LFs have been up quite a bit longer for near twice the dough and 30% off the original cost.
    April 25, 2013, 11:06:04 PM
  • PhoenixClaw: @Anax Onkyo is also going to release IEMs, but they "promised" they won't be bassy.

    April 25, 2013, 10:52:10 PM
  • Analixus: Oh KEF is making headphones, sure let's all jump in the water.  Can't wait for the weird sounding Linn phones to come out.
    April 25, 2013, 10:50:00 PM
  • Analixus: Yeah but people will drop 4K on a liquidfire that is mediocre by comparison or some shit Leben.  One thing I've learned w/ all this audiophile stuff is that most of them don't actually care about quality sound or fidelity.  People want cool looks, to be part of a special owners club or to cover up their crappy recordings so they can zone out.  That's the majority of audiofools I come across.  I don't even include the objective Nazis that probably don't even listen to music or know what an actual instrument sounds like.

  • MuppetFace: I have the Freq-Phase JH16Pro w/ the JH-3A amp. The JH16Pro earphones sound good but have terrible build quality. The JH-3A amp is a massive failure: noisy as hell, lacks a remotely black background, too much gain, etc.
    April 25, 2013, 11:14:23 AM
  • MuppetFace: Wow, that's really disappointing regarding the AS-2. That was one of the CIEMs I was most interested in. I've been reading some positive things, but my experience w/ the old ASGs was pretty bad.

  • twizzleraddict: Comparing an S4 to a B&W P3, for example, the S4 wipes the floor with the P3s in terms of value, especially for general on-the-go use. They work fine, for example, in the subway, the bus and walking in high traffic city areas with a lots of noise around. I'm sure there are others in the same price range which will be better but choose based on your application.

    April 22, 2013, 08:39:22 AM
  • phillip88: MF, which level do you grade the RE-400 to be in league with?
    April 22, 2013, 07:05:54 AM
  • Deep Funk: Even a CMoy can bring them to life. I didn't find the HD250 particularly picky or hard to drive...
    April 22, 2013, 06:31:25 AM
  • MuppetFace: Holy shit, the RE-400 are good.
    April 22, 2013, 04:12:02 AM
  • RudeWolf: I always find the HD250 to be sort of an oddball- many people ask me for a nice closed phone, but I can't recommend the Linears as they need good amplification.
    April 22, 2013, 03:58:07 AM
  • planx: take a listen to Thugz Mansion (N.Y) by Nas ft 2Pac & J.Phoenix
    April 21, 2013, 11:56:27 PM
  • planx: this might surprise most people, but Nas has some pretty good recordings
    April 21, 2013, 11:55:46 PM
  • Deep Funk: What hurt the most was selling the HD250 II Linears...
    April 21, 2013, 11:38:59 PM
  • Deep Funk: Sell and don't look back. It it strange how little I think of certain things and yet I can become so attached to certain items I have.

    April 21, 2013, 10:24:25 AM
  • AstralStorm: well, that'd be about the real value of them
    April 21, 2013, 10:24:15 AM
  • Tari: I doubt anyone bothered.
    April 21, 2013, 10:12:25 AM
  • Hix: Anyone else trying to bid on it here?
    April 21, 2013, 10:05:28 AM
  • Hix: And it's done; £2551 or $3885. Absolutely horrific.
    April 21, 2013, 10:04:25 AM
  • shipsupt: sniped at the last minute, someone either got a smoking deal, or more likely got smoked
    April 21, 2013, 10:04:00 AM
  • Tari: Actually.
    April 21, 2013, 09:57:51 AM
  • Tari: Last time I saw the 300 number come up the same thing played out and the consensus at the end was more were made when including Meiers last batch.  I don't remember who said what though.
    April 21, 2013, 09:53:39 AM
  • AstralStorm: actually, there have been 300 HE90 made - but the source for this is a bit wonky. Way fewer Paradox than those.
    April 21, 2013, 09:49:29 AM
  • shipsupt: Yeah, I did the same about 20 mintues ago, but likely it's too late.
    April 21, 2013, 09:34:41 AM
  • Hix: Just reported it as fraud, but I'm not sure Ebay answer these in any great hurry. Hopefully he can get his money back from Paypal in the end.
    April 21, 2013, 09:30:26 AM
  • Hix: Another bidder just jumped in at 37 mins to go, up to about $900. Surely people don't think this is real...
    April 21, 2013, 09:26:22 AM

    April 21, 2013, 09:23:51 AM

    April 21, 2013, 09:21:56 AM
  • Tari: That was with the amps, more were sold separately I believe.
    April 21, 2013, 09:20:43 AM
  • shipsupt: how many of them were built?  I thought 300... serial number 318!?
    April 21, 2013, 09:16:26 AM

  • shipsupt: Astral, take a breath...
    April 21, 2013, 09:02:23 AM
  • AstralStorm: or going up, a measurement/correction system for $3-5k
    April 21, 2013, 08:58:48 AM
  • AstralStorm: might as well sell perfect EQ boxes for HD800 for $1000, because why the fuck not ;p
    April 21, 2013, 08:58:18 AM
  • AstralStorm: as it is, it's a snob item - it's not better enough than a great rig with HD800, or some Stax (which are overpriced themselves)
    April 21, 2013, 08:54:23 AM
  • AstralStorm: goddamn Veblen, why did he have to discover economics ;)
    April 21, 2013, 08:50:15 AM
  • AstralStorm: cutting the price by 5 would be somewhat reasonable
    April 21, 2013, 08:42:19 AM
  • AstralStorm: I never understood why it was so expensive
    April 21, 2013, 08:41:56 AM
  • AstralStorm: there weren't that many units made - probably about as many as Paradox ;p
    April 21, 2013, 08:40:45 AM
  • AstralStorm: it's quite easy to verify - ask him and Sennheiser about the serial number
    April 21, 2013, 08:40:16 AM
  • lmswjm: surprises me that anyone would bid
    April 21, 2013, 08:39:53 AM
  • Hix: Big scam, or biggest scam?
    April 21, 2013, 08:00:13 AM
  • Hix: So some guy with zero feedback is trying to pawn HE90s on Ebay. 2 hours to go, 5 bidders and it's at about $800; [link]
    April 21, 2013, 08:00:05 AM
  • Questhate: Oh yeah and I got the Rodriguez - Cold Fact clear vinyl last week. It was my first RSD and I definitely had a good time. Waited in line 2 hours before my local store was open and got to chat with everyone about music and concerts.
    April 21, 2013, 07:23:57 AM
  • Questhate: I really wanted the Sigur Ros, Tame Impala EP and new Foals album but didn't get any of them. I'm going to check a few other stores today to see if I get lucky
    April 21, 2013, 07:21:50 AM
  • Questhate: @struggles -- I scored the GZA - liquid swords box set, White Stripes - Elephant 10th anniversary, Oval - 94 Diskont reissue, Surfer Blood - Demon Dance 7", Black Milk - Synth or Soul, Brian Eno x Nicholas Jaar x Grizzly Bear, Jamie XX edits, The Roots - Things Fall Apart and Notorious BIG - Ready to Die reissues. My local store didn't get the Brother Ali picture disc in yet but the store owner would put a copy aside for me.

  • victor25: I'v been spending all my money on vinyl and first edition cd's :D
    April 21, 2013, 06:10:46 AM
  • AstralStorm: so there's nowhere to go to right now, need new gear. HD800 + mods, my personal portable DAC/amp/effect once that's done... Later something more stationary too. Darned grass is always greener on the other side. ;)
    April 21, 2013, 04:53:01 AM
  • AstralStorm: now that they're actually volume matched with HE-500, they come oh so close - HE-500 seems to have some very slight metallic reverb going (from mesh?), while Paradox have some "stored" low end energy making bass slightly slow (in damping?) [before someone says "thread" - I'm done]
    April 21, 2013, 04:11:04 AM
  • AstralStorm: suprisingly sounds better than the "DF fixed" without crossfeed, huh - with some high end drop, but more correct space
    April 21, 2013, 04:06:52 AM
  • AstralStorm: hm, the default "tubby+dampened" coloration of these headphones really remind me of RE-400 with Comply - that comes with an "inverse skijump" FR I think
    April 21, 2013, 04:00:01 AM
  • AstralStorm: also found that my previous eq was 3 dB too loud, courtesy of some cheap SPL meter. Too loud listening tends to damage distance resolution for me
    April 21, 2013, 03:54:21 AM
  • AstralStorm: earpad - its mounting band must've got loose a bit and rattled
    April 21, 2013, 03:52:04 AM
  • AstralStorm: never mind, found the source of the rattle
    April 21, 2013, 03:51:20 AM
  • AstralStorm: yes, I have tightened the screws to be sure - that removed midrange resonance that developed, but not the subbass rattle - subpar materials used in those basic shells ;p
    April 21, 2013, 03:50:32 AM
  • AstralStorm: I'd rather neither damage them nor send them across the ocean, because (see former point)
    April 21, 2013, 03:49:52 AM
  • AstralStorm: (not a lot, but still unfortunately audible with test tones or rare music that goes this low)
    April 21, 2013, 03:44:19 AM
  • AstralStorm: how do I fix that?
    April 21, 2013, 03:43:43 AM
  • AstralStorm: hey, I'm getting rattle in the right channel of my Paradox at subbass frequencies - it's a new development
    April 21, 2013, 03:43:37 AM
  • MuppetFace: Yeah, the "humble rig" thing is false modesty. Fishing for complements.
    April 21, 2013, 02:57:09 AM

  • justin w.: ive been on head-fi over a decade and they never allow links to other headphone forums unless they are non-English
    April 19, 2013, 03:15:10 PM
  • Armaegis: This was the explanation *shrug*... "For myriad reasons (some of which you may or may not be familiar), we do not currently allow links or to changstar.com from Head-Fi. As a result, your post (the original unedited text of which can be found below) was edited. I hope you understand, even if you don't agree."
    April 19, 2013, 03:07:09 PM
  • justin w.: before that, you couldnt mention ipodstudio ;)
    April 19, 2013, 02:46:54 PM
  • justin w.: head-case has been around since 2006 and you cant mention it on HF either
    April 19, 2013, 02:46:28 PM
  • TMRaven: Someone asked specifically for the link to the topic in which Purrin was using his CSD plots down to -60db.  A mod edited my link out and during the PM conversation brought up how Changstar hates Head-fi because of logo etc.

  • cn11: Here here to the MOTD.
    April 19, 2013, 07:46:54 AM
  • justin w.: i'm not sure there are more than 3 Stax dealers in the U.S. now.  there will never be a storefront or U.S. advertising because the margin is too low.  it costs about $500 in google ads to sell a SR-009
    April 18, 2013, 06:30:09 PM
  • omegakitty: for something as niche as super expensive headphones that require a special amp to operate i think 4 or 5 dealers in the US is plenty. especially since they are all online dealers
    April 18, 2013, 05:31:26 PM
  • catscratch: still I should be thankful they still exist in the first place... it could have been worse
    April 18, 2013, 05:11:53 PM
  • catscratch: Fair pricing across the board would help too. You need to engender good will in customers especially today with whiny entitled brats blowing up all over the internet over any perceived slight. In Stax's case I feel like they're a bit out of touch and behind the times with their business model.
    April 18, 2013, 05:09:30 PM
  • MuppetFace: Yeah, Yama distribution in the US is not-so-great.
    April 18, 2013, 04:55:18 PM
  • justin w.: all it would take is 1 person working in japan to do that
    April 18, 2013, 04:05:55 PM
  • justin w.: they need to cut out the distributors and just sell directly to dealers
    April 18, 2013, 04:05:38 PM
  • catscratch: *mark. Also, the lower-end Stax is probably a bit undervalued considering how overinflated market prices are right now.
    April 18, 2013, 03:38:57 PM
  • catscratch: Great, because the only way Stax will get around the grey market export problem is to make up overseas prices even more, while keeping the same shitty service and distribution system. Makes perfect sense.
    April 18, 2013, 03:38:15 PM
  • justin w.: change is coming to Stax pricing whenever they get around to it
    April 18, 2013, 02:45:30 PM

  • ocswing: well they should tell Japan to stop purposely devaluing the yen then
    April 18, 2013, 12:11:48 PM
  • justin w.: they actually complain the U.S. pricing is too low compared to the rest of the world besides homeland Japan
    April 18, 2013, 11:04:12 AM
  • justin w.: they dont consider 6 months long enough to be permanent
    April 18, 2013, 11:03:43 AM
  • justin w.: Stax has not changed their export pricing
    April 18, 2013, 11:03:29 AM
  • mkubota1: the yen-dollar exchange rate has taken off in the last 6 months (~25%).  i'd expect prices to reflect that soon over here.
    April 18, 2013, 10:22:21 AM
  • anetode: wait for the next dynamics to cycle through and the market should push the th600s down to d7000 levels (waiting for mainstream resellers to break the map)
    April 18, 2013, 10:09:52 AM
  • Mr.Sneis: meh selling for =/ sold
    April 18, 2013, 09:54:53 AM

    April 18, 2013, 09:02:20 AM
  • omegakitty: i will have to relisten to In Rainbows. i dont really have a strong opinion of it either way
    April 18, 2013, 07:30:53 AM
  • Girls Generation: anyone know hows the resale on th600/900?
    April 18, 2013, 01:03:03 AM
  • twizzleraddict: ocswing, same here. some of the albums takes a little time and multiple listens before u find the gems within the tracks. i hated In Rainbows initially and kept at it and have finally come to appreciate it after about 10 listens (yes, i'm dense that way).
    April 18, 2013, 12:00:52 AM
  • n3rdling: i agree with you tari...ok comp/in rainbows are my favs, then the bends, then the rest for the same reasons.
    April 17, 2013, 11:51:02 PM
  • ocswing: Everything through Amnesiac I liked immediately. Since then it's taken some time to appreciate the records fully. There isn't a single one I dislike though.
    April 17, 2013, 11:35:55 PM
  • Mr.Sneis: But really have to be in the mood to handle it
    April 17, 2013, 10:18:46 PM
  • Mr.Sneis: Yknow.  I think a few months ago I was going on about how much I hated KoL.  I reverse my opinion now and I find myself digging it now. ><
    April 17, 2013, 10:18:21 PM
  • Tari: I will is very cool, though that live version is missing out on some great overdubbed harmonies from the album.  Ok Computer and In Rainbows are probably my favorites, though the Bends was for years.  I wish they stuck to melody and harmonics more than experiments with glitch.  The interlude in "Reckoner" as an example is a great idea of what they could do if they weren't so goshdarn pretentious about not being musical sometimes.
    April 17, 2013, 05:45:04 PM
  • ocswing: In Rainbows was pretty good, KoL was okay. Both were significantly better being performed live
    April 17, 2013, 05:44:52 PM
  • ocswing: HTTT is probably my least favorite. Took the longest before I appreciated it
    April 17, 2013, 05:43:50 PM
  • Maxvla: I like several songs on OK Computer better than any individual song on HTTT though
    April 17, 2013, 05:36:55 PM
  • Maxvla: HTTT is my fav RH album, but I don't really listen to RH as much as I used to
    April 17, 2013, 05:36:32 PM
  • omegakitty: thanks milos, will check that out after the new ghostface album is done :)
    April 17, 2013, 05:20:49 PM
  • omegakitty: Amnesiac is well appreciated by fans. i might even prefer it to Kid A
    April 17, 2013, 05:10:28 PM
  • n3rdling: I'm big on in rainbows...king of limbs was a bit of a 'let down'.  I was listening to this a lot last week, prob my fav live performance by them: [link]
    April 17, 2013, 04:51:49 PM
  • twizzleraddict: Amnesiac is a good listen. Very underappreciated since it was recorded the same time as Kid A and released later.

Los Angeles Regional Summer Meet July 20, 2013

Third_eye is putting together a great meet with many of our favorite vendors attending. Mark the date. July 20, 2013 at the Warner Center, in the valley of pr0n. Let's try to attend and show him our support!

NEW IMPRESSIONS: Pre-Production Liquid Gold

Muppetface checks out the latest offering from Cavalli Audio, an amp that will surely be your ortho's best friend. If you can afford it.

EARLY IMPRESSION: Liquid Lightning MK II Electrostatic Headphone Amp

Some early impressions of the LL2. Muppetface and a few others should be providing a review or more impressions in a few days.

MEASUREMENTS: Spiral Ear SE 5-Way IEM

Various measurements including quick subjective impressions.

Measurable Aspects of Balanced Armatures that Everyone Should Know

Balanced armature drivers have distortion characteristics very different from traditional dynamic drivers.

NAD RP18 (vintage 1976) RD Modded

This is an OEM version of the Fostex T50 (not to be confused with the modern T50RP). RD experimented on some mods for this. This ancient headphone sounds pretty darn good.

REVIEW/COMPARISON: Invicta DAC vs. PWD2

Analmorticus recently sat down with the Invicta to give it a thorough comparison with the PWD2. What was the outcome? Click to find out all of his thoughts, gear used, and images!

DAC OFF: X-Sabre, PWD2, Gungir, and more

Maxvla and Jason@Schiit bravely left us a few DACs for us to pick apart. Amazingly, our impressions were positive for these two DACs. Wait, that's not supposed to happen!

REVIEW: Empirical Audio Off-Ramp USB to SPDIF Converter

We assess the Off-Ramp 5 USB to SPDIF converter with the Gungnir and PWD2 DACs. Is this box BS or not BS? We find out. In addition, we take a look at the competing Audiophilleo 1 USB to SPDIF converter.

Do you need a DSD capable DAC

Some considerations to take before you decide that you absolutely need a DAC which can play back the "latest" and "greatest" hi-rez formats.

Moth 304TL

Anyone got $60,000? This is the amp that almost killed its designer Craig Uthus. Doubtful we will ever see something quite like this ever again. Interstage transformers. No coupling caps. No feedback. Full Class A. Thanks to Tari or getting these pix for us. A CS exclusive!

ahoy Paraphrasing a prominent thread in this forum... Apparently, CD and SACD players are in decline, but I want one for my existing collection. Can folks recommend a few such players for me at say, up to $1000 and up to $2000?

Thanks,
Jeffrey  :-\
